If this was a legit possibility for all sports I think SDSU would be in without question.

We can dream though.

Until the AAC does something regarding membership dream is all we can do...

BTW... If the AAC is in tact after July 1st 2025, the AAC will get more money by just adding one of the teams sitting there dreaming of bigger and better things (SDSU, BYU, AF, Army or even Buffalo or GSU).

All of those schools have been winners on the FB field except one... GSU. We don't need to add a perennial loser.

"If" the AAC is still in tact in its current format in 2025, it will mean that a rule got passed allowing for us to stay at 11, and after 5 years of that, I kinda doubt we would expand unless one team REALLY stepped up.

Boise St is a good football team, but their overall sports program and academics, along with location leaves much to be desired.

I think we will not expand unless Air Force or Army decide to join. BYU isnt coming, so point in ever putting in their name.... and the other names you mentioned are laughable. The market has spoken and both of those teams get less than $500K a year for their TV rights.... and they just arent any good.

If we are gonna take a program that has potential but isnt a big name, there are plenty of better options.

I recall that SD State wanted to stay (at least Sterk did) even after Boise decided it wouldn't stay. Then when the estimated TV $ came out, it wouldn't work financially so they went back to the MWC.

That would add probably $500,000 onto every schools travel budget line item...not happening.

IF it was football only and IF we added three western teams (which would help limit travel) then I dont think it would be overly expensive but as much as I love SDSU and think they have amazing potential, I dont see it happening either.

For travel, expense, geographic fit and a host of other reasons... Air Force or maybe CSU would be the best western partner... and if we go east, Army is the only real choice.

Yes, but those IFs were not part of the post I was replying to. Football only would still be around $200,000 when factoring in the shipping of all equipment and travel/lodging for 120 people across the country. Honestly though, I would want to add SDSU in for basketball too...they are a genuinely good basketball product, and that would completely delegitimize the MWC in that sport if they left.

Basketball doesn't matter in this instance. Like, The MAC was the 9th best conference last year, the MWC was the 15th. But MAC ain't gettin' no where near the money the MWC gets. It's football, football, football.

WIth every NCAA tourney win being worth around $1.7 million to the conference, it may be worth it if SDSU was able to make the tourney every year.
Its why I didnt mind adding WSU and its also a reason why CSU might not be a bad addition. They used to have solid Bball and a move to the AAC could help.

Which is why a football only add is basically all you need. You can stay with 11 in basketball and when everyone moves to 20 conference games you can do a round robin with 11.

Playing devils advocate against this conventional wisdom-----I'd argue that adding a strong basketball school is more needed than adding a 12th football team. The exit of UConn DOES clearly weaken the overall strength of AAC basketball---where as getting rid of the weakest and most unsuccessful football program in the AAC (UConn) actually improves the overall quality of AAC football. Thus, adding a quality basketball school like VCU would be an excellent way of recovering most of what the league lost in UConn. On the other hand---Its not really necessary to replace UConn football unless a clear and obvious value adding program presents itself. The football league is improved simply by no longer being saddled with its worst team.

Agree that the conference should add a strong basketball member to replace UConn, and that the priority to maintain 12 members is as great for MBB as it is for FB.

There are a number of potential BB/olympic members, including VCU, Dayton, et al.

Also agree that the conference wouldn't necessarily be harmed if it takes ~ a year to bring FB membership back up to 12.

Yet, it will probably have to be a high priority to have 12 AAC FB members by the end of the NCAA waiver period, if not sooner.

All other additions from UMass to SDSU and anything in between should be full membership only... The hybrid stuff is part of what killed the BIG EAST teams don't really like being partial members.

Let's stop with the hybrid "killed" the Big East. The teams that left simply got in a more prestigious league and got more money. A lot more money.

The AAC just need to put out the best set of teams that will bring the TV dollars. If that means a hybrid or non-hybrid it doesn't matter to me. Any team will leave with a Big 12 offer. Might as make as much as possible now.

Only people who were not a part of the Big East believe that the hybrid didnt kill it. Those of us who were actually there know the truth.

The reason that some started even looking at other conferences was because the hybrid model kept football from doing what it needed to do.

If we hadnt been a hybrid, then TCU would have been added a year earlier than they were, a TV deal could have been worked out MUCH faster and we would have been under a $13 million a year deal BEFORE the AAC acted.

ESPN would have had the Big East under contract and had no need to help build up the ACC.

Movement would have been minimal... and I dont think there would have been nearly as much of a realignment as what happened.

The long delay that we had to go through to add TCU and to wait for Nova to make up their mind is what kept us from securing our position and locking in a contract.

Yes. But what you seem to also be forgetting is---

1) The Big East utilized a 50-50 basketball to football hybrid structure. Nobody is talking about doing that.

2) The WAC blew up despite everyone in that league being an "all sports" football playing member. The SWC suffered defections and eventually collapsed despite every member being an "all sports" member. Having everyone as "all sports" members is not some magic elixir that inoculates a league from disharmony or collapse.

3) The hybrid structure also allowed the Big East conference to be a power conference in basketball while also being an AQ "power conference" in football for more than two decades---despite not having a single old school blue blood "king pin" football program in its ranks. No other power conference was like that. The closest the Big East had to a kingpin program was Miami. That said---the "U" was hardly an old money blueblood like Bama or Texas---it was kind of a "new money" program....Furthermore--the league stayed AQ for another decade even AFTER Miami left.

As we dont have a kingpin blue blood program to serve as a P5 anchor for the AAC---we will need to develop differently from most other prior power conferences. When it comes tme to add to the conference, we should have no aversion to utilizing options that will allow us to strengthen football without hurting basketball (and vice versa). If its me running the show----I'd add VCU right now. That replaces much of what was lost with UConn on the basketball side without hurting football at all. Football can remain at 11 for now since the loss of UConn football was actually more of a positive than a negative. Just bide our time at 11 until a suitable full member or "football only" member becomes available. In other words---we progress and move forward only by adding high quality programs. You dont progress toward power status by adding the ODU's, Charlott's, and UTSA's of the world.

1. true about a "True blue blood", but Miami, ND, Pitt, Syracuse and even god awful Rutgers had great historic football lineage.

2. Egos, we need to be careful because history has a way of repeating itself.

3. VCU needs to come in with Army or Air Force as the only additions... if we d a western "POD" then 3 teams need to come together as all sports + Football... VCU can stand on its own if they are deemed valuable.

We are building differently... all large Urban universities, other than ECU, but ECU can take care of business with the coaching moves they have made... just need a year or two.

IF we can land BYU with or without Olympic sports by themselves then no need for further discussions.

Honest question, what's the advantage of 12 conference teams over 11 in basketball? I wouldn't mind adding VCU but the only 12th team I really care about is in football.

If we are gonna take a program that has potential but isnt a big name, there are plenty of better options.

Technically we don't need a rule change from The NCAA to stay at 11 as long as we have 2 divisions with unbalanced schedule or pay a 10 game round robin conference schedule, The 10 game conference schedule will never happen unless Navy is happy playing only Army and ND in OOC Schedule. Both scenarios will allow the AAC to have a CCG.

YES ^^^ if we need to wait for a football only to clear schedule then add VCU tomorrow 04-cheers

We are playing under a 2 year waiver in this format, with no promise that it will be renewed.
We will need another team, or a rule change to keep going. Dont believe me, then why did Aresco have to go get a waiver?

All of those schools have been winners on the FB field except one... GSU. We don't need to add a perennial loser.

Actually we don't need a rule change to keep going with 11, we would just have to play uneven divisions to keep a CCG.

The waiver is to play with:
- 11 Football teams
- no divisions
- no round robin
- and match the top 2 teams in the CCG

* No other conference does this and/or has ever done this in college football

Any other plan or school does nothing to elevate the AAC. Aresco, TV, and the presidents know this

Don't need to do anything beyond playing uneven divisions. No waiver needed & much better than adding a school that dilutes value of the conference.
