Let's stop with the hybrid "killed" the Big East. The teams that left simply got in a more prestigious league and got more money. A lot more money.

The AAC just need to put out the best set of teams that will bring the TV dollars. If that means a hybrid or non-hybrid it doesn't matter to me. Any team will leave with a Big 12 offer. Might as make as much as possible now.

Only people who were not a part of the Big East believe that the hybrid didnt kill it. Those of us who were actually there know the truth.

The reason that some started even looking at other conferences was because the hybrid model kept football from doing what it needed to do.

If we hadnt been a hybrid, then TCU would have been added a year earlier than they were, a TV deal could have been worked out MUCH faster and we would have been under a $13 million a year deal BEFORE the AAC acted.

ESPN would have had the Big East under contract and had no need to help build up the ACC.

Movement would have been minimal... and I dont think there would have been nearly as much of a realignment as what happened.

The long delay that we had to go through to add TCU and to wait for Nova to make up their mind is what kept us from securing our position and locking in a contract.

No. There is no team we can add that will increase the value of our contract. You are literally trying to say that adding 1 team would make our contract worth $22-33 million per year.

Thats not happening.

Yes. But what you seem to also be forgetting is---

1) The Big East utilized a 50-50 basketball to football hybrid structure. Nobody is talking about doing that.

2) The WAC blew up despite everyone in that league being an "all sports" football playing member. The SWC suffered defections and eventually collapsed despite every member being an "all sports" member. Having everyone as "all sports" members is not some magic elixir that inoculates a league from disharmony or collapse.

3) The hybrid structure also allowed the Big East conference to be a power conference in basketball while also being an AQ "power conference" in football for more than two decades---despite not having a single old school blue blood "king pin" football program in its ranks. No other power conference was like that. The closest the Big East had to a kingpin program was Miami. That said---the "U" was hardly an old money blueblood like Bama or Texas---it was kind of a "new money" program....Furthermore--the league stayed AQ for another decade even AFTER Miami left.

As we dont have a kingpin blue blood program to serve as a P5 anchor for the AAC---we will need to develop differently from most other prior power conferences. When it comes tme to add to the conference, we should have no aversion to utilizing options that will allow us to strengthen football without hurting basketball (and vice versa). If its me running the show----I'd add VCU right now. That replaces much of what was lost with UConn on the basketball side without hurting football at all. Football can remain at 11 for now since the loss of UConn football was actually more of a positive than a negative. Just bide our time at 11 until a suitable full member or "football only" member becomes available. In other words---we progress and move forward only by adding high quality programs. You dont progress toward power status by adding the ODU's, Charlott's, and UTSA's of the world.

The smu who barely loses anyone and has all the redshirts available to play?

Better than Cinci this year and will be so next year too.

As much as it pains me to say so, Smoo dude is right. The Ponies will likely be even better next year.

Better than Cincy this year and next? what is your proof of this? what are you using to make this claim? Do you know what UC has coming back? SMU and UC didn't play this year and we have no indication that one team would've beat the other. We are talking about the same UC team that kept every team (except for ECU.......) under their season average in yards and points. UC team that is bringing about every player on defense except for two of their linebackers and returns, arguably, the best defensive player or at the least the best DB in the league in Andrew Wiggins.

I think the word "Better" is a bit lofty of a sentiment. You could say they will challenge each other as the best teams in the conference... I believe that would be more accurate.

No problem, I rarely come in here and beat my chest for UC. Here's also the truth I'm intrigued by Houston. They need to give their safeties in order because they often times play like they are playing only 10 men on the field... But if they get that in order and rather if it's Tune or King I project them to play well next year. Tune is actually a decent quarterback who can run Holgorsen offense if Holgorsen stop trying to find ways to play his son 01-wingedeagle

The part regarding the WAC and the SWC is 100% accurate and some of the same members are now in the AAC and are still looking to move on... I think that says a lot of why some conferences will never be stable or sustainable.

The BIG EAST was a power conference in basketball without football... It was the will to add football and that 50-50 power structure that killed the BIG EAST, had the conference done what was best for the conference as a whole it would have been on par with the SEC and the Big 10 with Miami (FL) and Penn State.

I cant speak to the WAC or any other of the hyotheticals. What I can say is that being a hybrid caused the Big East to move slowly, react even slower and in the end its that indecision that allowed others to creep in.

If we had acted just 3 months faster, then there would have been a $13 million deal signed and in place. Pitt and Cuse ended up in the ACC which I believe paid about $18 million when they signed. They would have had an exit fee around $26 million and so many other things that had to happen for realignment to happen, very well might not have.

Much of what happened was in response to other actions. The Big 10 expanded beyond Nebraska because of the SEC and ACC making a move. A stable Big East probably keeps some of that from happening.

Just think if Nebraska had left and the Big 12 had grabbed either TCU or Utah to replace them and then they too were stable.

All I know is a stable Big East with a much higher exit fee makes a move to teh ACC much harder, more expensive and wouldnt have made as much sense... and all of that happened because we were massively disfunctional due to factions.

I like your ambitious take on the Big East/Raycom super conference, but USF football didn't even exist when the Big East was formed and UConn was still FCS. Memphis or East Carolina would make far more sense in the above scenario.

Just bide our time at 11 until a suitable full member or football only member becomes available. In other words---we progress and move forward only by adding high quality programs. You dont progress toward power status by adding the ODU's, Charlott's, and UTSA's of the world.

Football: (One hell of 12 team football conference)
Boston College
Penn State (Penn State wanted to be part of the BIG EAST)
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Miami (FL)
Rutgers
West Virginia
Virginia Tech
Temple
Notra Dame (With Same deal they now have with ACC)
Cincinnati
Louisville
South Florid
UConn

Basketball: (One hell of 21 team Basketball conference-20 league games)
Boston College
Penn State (Penn State wanted to be part of the BIG EAST)
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Miami (FL)
Rutgers
West Virginia
Virginia Tech
Temple
Notra Dame (With Same deal they now have with ACC)
Cincinnati
Louisville
South Florid
UConn
Georgetown
Providence
St Johns
Seton Hall
Villanova
DePaul*
Marquette*

*Perhaps DePaul and Marquette might not be part of the conference

I like your ambitious take on the Big East/Raycom super conference, but USF football didn't even exist when the Big East was formed and UConn was still FCS. Memphis or East Carolina would make far more sense in the above scenario.

I was only referring to teams that were actually part of the beg east or were denied or declined invitation prior to 2010, guess I should have included Sacred Heart that declined an invitation to be a founding member.

Since I was basing on teams that were members prior to 2010 si the reason I didn't mention UCF, Memphis, UCU, Tulane, Tulsa, SMU, Navy and Houston.

All of this.... We need one team IF they add value, no more. Added value is the key, if adding 3 can add value then go west - BYU, Boise & SDSU. IF they don't want to come, OK too.

Stand at 11 until 2025 when we are forced to make changes. If not, then the AAC can be picky and get more money with that ESPiN "LOOK IN".

We're good.

For the record Holgs only played his son thru necessity. Tune suffered a severe hamstring strain in our final non-conference game against UNT. He was unable to go the following week against UConn, and was extremely limited in his mobility for several weeks afterward. Hence, our 2-3 week Tune/Holgs the Younger/Bryson Smith 3 headed qb monster.

If this was a legit possibility for all sports I think SDSU would be in without question.

I really think that is going to be a bad deal IF 2 or 4 teams get picked off by the BigXII (as an example). Better to be at 14 if that happens than at 11.

Don't confuse the issue by stating facts.

I know of no case in which ESPN gave a raise to a G5 or non power team at a look in except when teams left for a power conference. If anyone remembers a case in which this was done please be good enough to inform me.
Thanks much.

Until the AAC does something regarding membership dream is all we can do...

BTW... If the AAC is in tact after July 1st 2025, the AAC will get more money by just adding one of the teams sitting there dreaming of bigger and better things (SDSU, BYU, AF, Army or even Buffalo or GSU).
