Hofstra Stuns UCLA, Earns 'Win For The Ages'
It’s not like the Hofstra men’s basketball team has never beaten a major program before.
Four years ago this week, Hofstra beat Florida State in a tournament in the Virgin Islands. In 2007, the Pride beat Nebraska in the NIT a few months after beating St. John’s for the fourth straight season. Back in the Flying Dutchmen days, there were wins over Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Mississippi, Florida and Virginia.
But none of the first 12 victories over major programs happened across the country, at one of the meccas of college basketball, at the start of a marathon road trip that could define a season in which the pendulum has already swung between high expectations and worst-case scenarios.
There’s no doubt about it. Hofstra 88, UCLA 78 is the biggest win in program history.
“The people that love Hofstra basketball will talk about, holy cow, our guys went to Pauley Pavilion and won,” Hofstra head coach Joe Mihalich said a few minutes before 3 AM this morning, after a locker room speech that’d already hit Twitter and before a spot on New York sports talk radio giant WFAN. “Gives you the chills just thinking about these kids and the great job they did.”

Legit. Way to go Hofstra! I don't care if UCLA is a shell of what they used to be. Helluva win.

That had a pretty solid RPI going in. Was a huge win!

Not saying it wasn't a big win. But not what it was portrayed to be. They've had bigger wins. Florida State comes to mind. And I'm thinking they beat Virginia once. Check out the records of the first 4 teams they have played. Sorry, but I'm skeptical of anything PAC 12. Every year they have teams touted to be much better than they turn out to be.

I did, their RPI is currently in the 40's

Until they play bigger competition, I'm not buying into the hype. This song has been played before. But I still do think it was a great win for Hofstra. Just not buying the RPI yet.

FSU was on a neutral court. This was the bigger win IMO.
They did beat Virginia back when they were the Flying Dutchmen. Not sure how good the respective teams were at that time though.

Recently UCLA has lost at home to Liberty and Belmont. All they have now, compared to their past success, is the name.

I can't engage in the diminishment of a win by a CAA team. Question. When is the last time UNCW beat a "name" program, regardless of conference?

Moss beat Penn State in the 2009-2010 season
Peterson beat Wake Forest in 2010-2011 season
Keatts won a lot but his non confernce schedule was genrally soft. His best non conference win was probably that road win at St. Bony in 2016-2017 season
McGrath's best non conference win is probably ECU or Campbell

So, quite awhile ago. I'd take a win over UCLA in a skinny minute.

Never said it wasn't a great win. But it's not like they beat a Duke or whatever. That was not Hofstra's best win ever. And our best win ever is still #16 USC.

I thought they were a few spots higher, i know they were a 4. Regardless i agree. We have had so many top 10 near misses. Same year, IU in round 2, GW(blew 20 point lead), UVA, Duke

In the 86-87 season we lost to Indiana 73-72 (in Bloomington). Why was that big? Indiana won the national championship that season. We missed a shot from the left corner and a couple of tips in the final seconds.

Rowsom was the tournament MVP. And Bobby Knight came into our locker room and told our guys that they were the better team in that game.

Long time Hofstra fan and former SID here. In terms of the brand name and the storied history of Pauley most of us Hofstra fans will say this is our biggest win...also the way we did it by 10 points on the road, playing with poise down the stretch was most impressive. Our PG, Desure Buie hit 13 free throws without a miss!!!!

Yep. And its always awesome to beat a team in a "buy game". Hofstra just got paid what, $30,000 by UCLA to beat them in their own house? More than that? That's VERY different than winning in a neutral court tournament, where teams many times are playing 2-3 games in as many days, or in a situation where you get a 2 or 4-game series with a team. You flew all the way out to the west coast and UCLA won't be providing a return game.
It doesn't matter how down UCLA is. They're still in a position to pay teams exorbitant fees to come to their house, with the expectation of a relatively "easy win". That's always an embarrassing moment for both the program AND their P5 conference. And Hofstra didn't just come back to win, but like you said, won by double digits.
Signature moment for the Pride program.

Northeastern let a good opportunity slip away late. Was a back and forth game about halfway through the 2nd half, they fell by 12 to South Alabama. South Alabama had a 1 point loss to ranked Auburn earlier in the year on a last second shot.

Exactly. You beat a brand name. And that alone is worth crowing about. But UCLA is no longer an elite program. I would still celebrate it as being a great win for your program and the CAA.
