I know ASU wants Big 10 or NCHC. Can't see them excited about trips to Alaska or Huntsville.
NCAA should deny this league an autobid for screwing over the Alaska schools and UAH
How can you justify this comment. Are we not in a free country? Can we not behave in our best interest? Can we not associate with whom we choose to associate? I mean really, talk about an overreaction. The equivalent statement would be someone that has a job that they have to commute 1.5 hours to and from work. RE: Seven schools have announced a new college hockey league
It doesn't help that Huntsville and Anchorage were #58 and #60 in RPI .... out of 60 schools. I check the date from recent years and these two are always at the back. They might be hurting the conference RPI enough to effectively deny the conference a bid every other year or so. It's a case of addition by subtraction. That they are
These are small schools in the WCHA with limited resources. It is a brutal penalty to have to travel 3,000 miles to Alaska. It makes sense to shorten the distances up and free resources for the program itself. A flight to Alaska is over 8 to 9 hours for these schools, and tickets run $1000. Even with a team discount that is a brutal 18 hours of travel and expense each player of these schools.
I do feel for those schools, but orphans are always created in reorgs. It is a reality check. Quite frankly the Alaska schools should play in a Canadian league. UBC is only 3 1/2 hour fight.
As for the comments about Arizona State. Well they have been clear, they want to eventually belong to a Western conference. That means the 4 corner states and the Pacific coast (not Alaska). But that is on hold until 3 or 4 schools in the West start hockey. Who knows when or if that will ever happen.
As for breaking away. This is what I always tell the fantasy reorg posters. Once you have some schools in your conference that don't work, you can't fire them like an ordinary at-will employee. They are equity co-owners. They are in the conference until they quit. And if they are much worse than the conference, they will never quit. Your only choice is to leave. The MWC did this to the WAC, the "new Big East" to the American ("old Big East").

Isn’t UAH building a new arena? They can just convert it from hockey to hoops.
Sullivan Arena in Anchorage loses Great Alaska Shootout and college hockey in a year. Anchorage has put up some good bball teams too - gave Murray St its toughest game the year the Racers went 30-1.
College hockey can make this work by mandating each school has to make a trip to one of UAA/UAF/UAH within 4 years. That trip to Alaska is the most memorable one a player will make in 4 years.
College hockey loses a ton of uniqueness if it washes its hands of the Seawolves, Nanooks, and Chargers — 3 programs who’ve played nice and tried to make it work. Shame on the sport if it doesn’t fix this.

Sullivan Arena lost the Great Alaska shootout in 2014. You could say UAA lost them, but not Sullivan

The CCHA and WCHA voluntarily took in the Alaska schools in ‘93. College hockey could make it work in a time much less revenues were flowing through the sport and travel was harder, but they can’t make it work in 2020?
There is a fine line between looking out for self-interest and just plain selfishness that kills 3 programs.

RE: Seven schools have announced a new college hockey league
You can blame the seven schools for leaving UAF/UAA/UAH behind, but at least there's some travel and competitive logic behind it even if it makes me sad from an emotional perspective. This all really goes back to the Big Ten coming together for hockey and leaving behind the CCHA/WCHA.
Miami and WMU aren't leaving the NCHC for this new league. The NCHC is the crown jewel of college hockey, the upper half of the eight team conference has basically been a lock for the NCAA tourney since its foundation. It'd be one thing if you could bring back the Big Ten teams since it was awesome having opponents like OSU and Michigan, but those days are gone. Leaving now would be like if the Southwest Conference was revived without Rice, A&M, and UT yet Arkansas left the SEC for them.

So you might consider dialing back the pearl clutching.
Quote:Honestly, if Bowling Green was admitted to the NCHC (like I think they should have been), I know you wouldn't be showing up with fingers pointing.
I was responding to the fact that you called this new league an "absolute middle finger."
Quote:You'd be an idiot to turn down an NCHC invite at the time with the trajectory the sport appeared to be on at the time.
I like what Bowling Green is helping to engineer here: A geographically sensible league like we used to have in the old CCHA. The NCHC is obviously a strong league, but, aside from Miami and Western Michigan, I'm not sure the brands in that league would move the needle for our fans. Plus the travel would be quite expensive.
My hope is that Miami and Western Michigan will consider joining us in this CCHA 2.0. If not, I imagine there will be interest in Pennsylvania or Western New York.

If you want to make travel easy, trade BG and Miami of Ohio for the 2 Minnesota schools.

Like this?
That would be fun, and I don't think it would be a step back for the NCHC. Minnesota State was an at-large Frozen Four team this year. That's a good program.

RE: Seven schools have announced a new college hockey league
There's speculation that this new-CCHA will try to get the 2 Pennsylvania schools (Robt. Morris, Mercyhurst) out of the AHA. I don't see what in it for them. Much longer drives, and much tougher competition. Good luck selling that. But I don't know a lot about the AHA. Maybe somebody else has more insight.
PS. I'm reading through this fanboard for more insight: https://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?1...HA-is-dead

RE: Seven schools have announced a new college hockey league
Statement from UA-Fairbanks Chancellor:
On June 28, the University of Alaska Fairbanks learned that seven members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced plans to withdraw from the WCHA. UAF was not notified in advance of this decision nor were we alerted to the preparation of such action. There are significant financial penalties for leaving the WCHA without advance notice. As such, each departing member has given two years' notice. We will continue to play WCHA hockey with the same teams for the next two years. While the current configuration has had its advantages, UAF, the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alabama-Huntsville have been financially disadvantaged in this conference, and a realignment may benefit all three universities in the long run. We are encouraged that there are a number of teams looking now, or will be looking soon, to join an NCAA Division I men's ice hockey conference. While disappointed in our WCHA colleagues' decision to leave, we look forward to the chance that lies ahead for building new partnerships.

I posted a few years ago, I think, Northern State wants to turn their men's hockey into a varsity D1 team. Simon Fraser wanted to upgrade their hockey team as well to be a varsity team to D1. This would be interesting if the NCAA would give Simon Fraser a waiver now to join the 2 Alaska schools for men's hockey.

Looks like they would be looking to join.
Lindenwood could be one that could make their men's club team into varsity. Both locations were dominate, and now both schools merge could be a sign for them to step up.

I would add: Bowling Green has done just this, according to our fans.
When Minnesota State asked to be considered for admission a year or two ago, the league approached Bowling Green and asked if we were interested. We said no. So the NCHC chose not to admit Minnesota State, either. I don't have first hand knowledge of this, but very knowledgeable Bowling Green fans say this is so.

They voluntarily took them in and now they are voluntarily showing them the door. The CCHA used to have Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Miami... The WCHA used to have North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Duluth, and a bunch of other tradition rich programs with budgets larger than the 7 schools that are leaving.
Maybe you forgot but there used to be one Alaska per league and now you think it's okay to throw the entire weight of both Alaska schools and Huntsville on these small schools with small budgets. You are looking at the overall picture but ignoring entirely the reality of these schools. They are trying to survive. In business it is usually easier to cut expenses that to increase revenue in the short term. What's more all 3 kinda sucked... So they weren't helping on the revenue side and we're massive drains on the expense side. As far as I can tell this is cold-blooded but absolutely necessary for the health of their programs.

If the NCAA approves to allow Simon Fraser to join D1 in Ice Hockey? How many Canadian schools join D2 to place their hockey teams in D1? We could see a spike of new fans coming to frozen four from Canada. This past season, the attendance for the Frozen 4 was down.
