RE: Seven schools have announced a new college hockey league
So.....looking at Wikipedia, is this just the Great Lakes WCHA schools functionally kicking out Huntsville and the Alaskas by reorganizing under a different name?

Nothing official, but exploring idea - have withdrawn from WCHA, with two year notice

even prominent NCAA Division I men’s hockey playing institutions have announced the exploration of a new Division I men’s hockey conference that would begin play with the 2021-2022 season. The seven institutions include: Bemidji State University; Bowling Green State University; Ferris State University; Lake Superior State University; Michigan Technological University; Minnesota State University, Mankato; and Northern Michigan University.

The group is comprised of institutions rich in history and tradition with a strong commitment to academic and athletic excellence. They are like-minded in their goals and aspirations for the potential new league with a focus on improving regional alignment and the overall student-athlete experience while building natural rivalries within a more compact geographic footprint.

The potential new conference is also committed to providing the best possible collegiate hockey experience for its student-athletes, fans, and all stakeholders. Finally, the group would plan to establish itself as an elite hockey conference that would have the highest standards for overall competitiveness and rigorous non-conference scheduling, along with a level of institutional investment that demonstrates significant commitment to their hockey programs and facilities, while also establishing relationships with corporate partners and others that create a high degree of visibility and positive media exposure for the league.

As current members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) men’s league, the schools have independently submitted formal Letters of Notice to the conference office, initiating the withdrawal process in accordance with WCHA Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. The institutions will continue to play in the WCHA during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons.

The seven institutions have engaged Dr. Morris Kurtz, a long-time athletics administrator and noted athletics and hockey consultant, to serve as spokesperson and to assist them as the group sets out to transform the college hockey landscape.

During these initial stages of developing the potential new conference there will be no further comment from these institutions, including Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Coaches. Media inquiries should be directed to Dr. Kurtz.

This is a big deal -- and very bad news for the WCHA outliers left on the outside looking in. (Alaska, Alaska-Anchorage, and Alabama-Huntsville)

Bowling Green has long thought to be interested in a reboot of the old CCHA (and it is said that Bowling Green still owns the intellectual property for that old league).

But seven isn't really enough for a new league. At this point, I imagine this CCHA 2.0 is looking for additional members. Perhaps they will come from Atlantic Hockey (members include Robert Morris, Niagara, and RIT).

Or, perhaps, this new league is hoping the two other MAC hockey schools will defect from the NCHC.

Wow.

Hope Huntsville doesn't lose their program. We need southern hockey.

So what's the situation now, three desperate schools control the shell of a hockey conference and need members? Any chance they could scoop up Arizona State, and then you start delving into D-3 and club teams? Maybe if Atlantic Hockey gets unstable you can peel off Air Force?

I know ASU wants Big 10 or NCHC. Can't see them excited about trips to Alaska or Huntsville.

NCAA should deny this league an autobid for screwing over the Alaska schools and UAH

Central Washington go to varsity with their club team? UNLV is talking to add hockey. Central Oklahoma could go varsity along with Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas.

If the CCHA 2.0 adds schools from Atlantic Hockey, perhaps the remaining WCHA schools could affiliate with Atlantic Hockey.

While travel costs are certainly a factor, it probably isn't the only factor. The Alaska schools and Alabama-Huntsville are laggards in the league standings and they may be under-resourced. For example, Alaska-Anchorage just decided to stop playing games in a 6,000-seat downtown arena. Instead, the Seawolves will play in an 800-seat campus facility.

It's a tough situation, but it already was a tough situation. Bowling Green made two trips to Alaska last season. Two more are planned for this season.

This league probably wouldn't need an autobid. Two WCHA teams made the Frozen Four tournament last season, and shedding the Alaskas and Alabama-Huntsville would only help overall strength of schedule.

Wowzers!! How come they just don't vote out Huntsville, Anchorage, and Fairbanks? (I feel bad for them, BTW. I like cheering for underdogs and D1 hockey schools in Alaska is unique)

I'd be shocked if either WMU or Miami joined, though. - > If they didn't want to be in the NCHC, they would've joined the WCHA back when the CCHA folded. With all the budget struggles schools are facing, wouldn't be shocking, though, if either bit.

While it's easy to say Robert Morris and Canisius being in a rebooted CCHA, they don't really have a history with any of these other Great Lakes schools.

Also, with the recent UCONN news, I was just thinking we could finally (almost) from a MAC hockey conference.

Disgusting, disgusting move. An absolute middle finger to three programs that make college hockey unique. UAF fans are talking about how their entire athletic department might go under as a result of this. Fairbanks has had college hockey since 1925.

yep, and it's sad, and I want them to succeed, but no one wants to go up to Alaska.

That's easy to say, I suppose. But let's not forget that your school ditched the WCHA a few years ago as part of a broader movement that ultimately killed the CCHA. In helping to kill the CCHA, Nebraska-Omaha also helped kill the standing gentlemen's agreement that college hockey had, in which each western conference took in one Alaska school in order to spread out the burden of travel on everyone.

It's been six years since Nebraska-Omaha ditched the WCHA. In those six years, your NCHC never once lifted a finger to take either of the Alaska schools in. You left it to the Bowling Greens and the Ferris States and the Michigan Techs to make one or even two trips up to Alaska each year (not counting the tournament), while your own program -- in the most geographically logical conference in America for Alaska college hockey -- couldn't be bothered to help at all.

We all know what happened here.

So: If this is such a middle finger to college hockey or whatever, will the NCHC now be offering to take either of these Alaska schools in?

No?

I didn't think so.

I wasn't happy about that move, either, for multiple reasons. I get why UND did it, and it was and is North Dakota's pet project, but I didn't like the impact it would have on the sport, let alone being stuck as a lower-end program in a conference full of heavy-hitters. I didn't like how it took college hockey west of the Appalachians, which used to be more horizontally-aligned, and turned it into a tiered system with WCHA as a mid-major of sorts. However I understand that all of those things were a reaction, probably an overreaction, to the Big Ten starting hockey, abandoning those two leagues and potentially monopolizing college hockey TV coverage.

No, to answer your question, the NCHC will absolutely not taking the UA_ schools since the NCHC's about schools that can and will commit to the sport. UAA just finished building an 800 seat arena to play in. That's ECAC/AHA size. If they were to expand, the two schools would be two of Minnesota State, Bowling Green, and Arizona State. I would love to have Fairbanks back, since them and UNO had a fun rivalry when they were together, but I can't see that happening.

To say UNO's done nothing to help grow the game is unfair, though. The Mavericks are playing Arizona State every year while they're an independent to help fill the schedule, and their reasoning is that as a relatively new program, they want to help grow the sport by helping other new hockey teams get off the ground. UNO's also traveling to Anchorage this year and has been in the Goal Rush on two different occasions.

Honestly, if Bowling Green was admitted to the NCHC (like I think they should have been), I know you wouldn't be showing up with fingers pointing. You'd be an idiot to turn down an NCHC invite at the time with the trajectory the sport appeared to be on at the time. If you're going to blame someone, blame Pegula and Jim Delaney.
