He needs to work on the jumpers so he can take them next season. It is all repetition. His size is what it is and he knows how to play D and he is a decent rebounder for his size. He needs to focus solely on shooting if we are going to be effective. He doesn't need to be great, just respected. Wade too.

Carver couldn't have shot much worse than BJ recently. But I'd say until he is enough of a threat to at least guard and not let him stand wide open just past the foul line with the ball, he's too much of a liability. We can't play 4 on 5 offense every possession. I like the guy, he's tough, he's smart, plays good D and he has heart... but man, at some point you have to have some offensive ability. At least enough to cause someone to guard you. Its worse than Brion Dunlap was.

If we had featured X, Kithcart, and Zip more, I think our offensive production would have been much better. We played right into our opponents hands. They focused all of their defensive attention on Caver and Stith, and we almost exclusively ran our offense through those two instead of the guys who are capable of scoring but had almost no defensive attention.

We ran a ton of offense through Green, especially last night. He didnt knock down shots.

Without Caver playing tremendous, it would have been ugly. No one else was able to step up when given a chance.

It was ugly anyway. 27% or whatever it was. WAYYYY too much one on one last night, IMO. Especially from Green. Just wasn't our night. We need help on the O side. I'm sure the coaches might know this!!! I hope!
Biggest thing I noticed was the assists difference. It was glaring

Dickens can't score. Carver can't score. Reece couldn't get on the court this year. Zip is undersized if we are playing a big team like Purdue instead of a positionless team. Wade can't shoot. X and Kith are streaky and inconsistent. Team will be young. Granted, some of these areas could improve, but unless Oliver is the next coming of Ja Morant, I'm having trouble seeing any improvement over this year. We need better players to take the next step.

Dickens has shown that he can be a scorer. He just seemed to hit a wall late in the year. I think he's going to be a good one.

That baby jumper is Dickens bread and butter. When they stopped running that play for him things got harder and he lost his touch. Also put 25 lbs on him and he would be a monster.
He's also shown he can hit a mid range shot. he didn't last night but he can

Edit. That's what you meant. Sorry lol

it will come down to other newcomers. But the plan needs to be Carver off the bench for rebounding and defense. Nothing else. If he still starts then yes we are screwed.

RE: Future of ODU Basketball
I have a feeling that the narrative of next season will be very much like this season:
Act One: season starts with a thud - miscues and a handful of frustrating losses as the team puts the pieces together.

Act Two: refinements and adjustments - team shows flashes of brilliant play and strings together wins convincingly, but still drops a few close games that they shouldn't.

Act Three: the repeat - team finds resonance, finishes season strong for another year of C-USA accolades.

My dreams, they are made of steel!

They take hundreds of shots every day during the off season and during the season. It is not about the shots and practicing them. It is about their ability mentality to want to take them and to make shots.

Carver's problem is his hands! He cannot hold onto the ball? He can grab rebounds but when he tries to shoot the ball he loses it? If you pass him the ball to shoot he drops it. If he needs to work on anything its catch and shoot.

Carver's problem is not physical! He has large very strong hands and is physically very strong. He can grab rebounds but when a shot is involved his hands turn to mush. He needs to work on catching and shooting the ball. Emphasis needs to be on catching. I don't know how many times this year he had point blank shots but lost the ball. Not bad shots but simply lost the ball?

Something happened with BJ down the stretch (injury?). You can't have someone that is that big of a part of the offense just fall off the cliff. We gutted our way through the conference tourney, but it isn't winning against a top 10 team.

The offense next year will be more balanced. But, when we need a basket, it will probably be Green.

We also need to get more athletic to get easier baskets. Green/Kithcart fit this mold. BJ did not, he just doesn't score buckets in transition.

We might be better defensively without BJ, but we need to improve rebounding wise.

Injury to BJ make sense.
Was it just my imagination or were BJ's shooting mechanics ever-so-slightly different in the last few games? He seemed to begin his shooting motion lower and maybe just a tad to one side?

As far as Green vs Purdue, he was not able to get any rhythm going after the 2 early fouls and time on the bench.

Yep! Soon as he went out 2 minutes in I told my buds, well, that’s it! We just don’t/didn’t have enough offense when you considered B.J. being so off.

BJ’s mechanics were definitely different. He had much less roataion on the ball recently compared to his “normal” shot.

I'm seeing a lot of public acknowledgement from Wood and JJ about how we were a good not great team, about how low scoring is frustrating. So at least they are owning that. Not saying it's acceptable or whatever but it is nice to know they are speaking about it so they are obviously striving to improve it. Better than remaining silent and not admitting what the issues are.

We were a much more exciting and higher scoring team last year. What changed? Hard to believe Randy Haynes was that much better at defense and running the floor than X.

Trey Porter. He was averaging 13.2 pts. Our entire front court this year combined between Lu Dajour and Elbert was 9.5.

Brandan also contributed 8.7. So we went from a total of 21.9 from the big guys down to 9.5.

Godwin was going to be a big part of this team. I know he wasn’t shooting great but he was starting to come on. He’s got good size for a 2 guard as well. He could of really helped stretch the floor for Caver and Green to drive the basketball.

Impossible to quantify, but IF our bigs contributed offensively like Trey and Brandon, I wonder how that would have freed Caver and BJ from so much double teaming and consequently more points between them.
Is Carvers defense and rebounding offset by lack of Offensive production, not just by him but everyone else? So far JJ has not felt that the case and for me that is a point of frustration.
