How does the fact that Rice's offense hasn't scored more than 21 points this season affect the recruitment of offensive players? Easier to get guys because they believe they might play earlier? Harder because they stop believing in Bloomgren's system and don't want to play for a dud offense?
I hope Bloomgren doesn't make Jerry Mack the fall guy at some point for the woes on offense. Mack didn't run this offense before he came to Rice and it doesn't seem like it would be fair to fault him.

I think I'd turn the offense over to Mack and see what he can do with it. The bad news is that I am not sure how much he can change it at this point in this season with our offensive personnel.

Of course, I would never have gone this far with this offense.

Bloomgren doesn't strike me as a man who would set someone up as the fall guy. He has made it clear that this is his offense. He even calls the plays.

Totally disagree. Seems logical that an 0-6 record would make it hard to recruit but Bloom is a good salesman/recruiter. Bet he easily sells recruits on being able to play freshman year, making an impact from day one and look at your 40 time compared to our older players, etc. It's all about recruiting and what can happen next year. Read the pressers. Almost always mentions Freshmen or new recruits, JUCO or grad transfers. Always up-selling their potential and just indicated that some Freshman or young guys will play against UTSA. However, he talks out of both sides of his mouth about meritocracy and intellectual brutality. I don't buy that these Freshman have earned the right to play as it's obvious when they do, that they're not ready. That's not to say that they won't be better than the current players one day but they're just not ready now. The strategy appears to be about rewarding potential not performance or hard work and having something to sell new recruits. I get it and may be a very smart strategy. It's all about getting the young guys some game experience and betting that with their potential and playing time this year, they will be that much better next year. But, make no mistake, it's a recruiting sales tool and perhaps, a long time strategy to win games in subsequent years. But it is NOT a strategy to win games this year. In addition, Bloom repeatedly alludes to the players not knowing how to win. Wonder if the players read this stuff? Did they read the post LaTech presser where Bloom specifically listed bad execution in a number of plays while he only taking blame for one bad play call on his part. Seriously, one bad play call? Don't disagree that there's often poor execution by players but a coach who would make a point of sharing such a specific list in a presser either has no leadership skills or at best, is in over his head. Oh wait, Bloom said last year in a presser something about how he's done everything he knows how to do in order to win. Really? So, is he actually saying that he's in over his head or blaming it on someone else? Seems like there's a couple of ongoing themes in these pressers.
Regardless, while Bloom's best attribute may be his ability to recruit, he definitely strikes me as someone who will throw throw the OC under the bus. Remember, last year was referred to as "year zero" which makes this year one. More salesmanship! Take a look at the roster. About 2/3 of the team are guys Bloom brought in, whether they're new recruits, JUCO or grad transfers. Bloom is running out of people to blame so if I were the OC, I'd be worried.

If we win 4 out of 6 games will you all finally shut up. This is only the second year. Give him a chance.

Announcers are LOVING the Kuithe brothers for Utah who were committed to us for much of 2017.

Indeed!

Here's a link to a Salt Lake City Tribune article about Brant: https://www.sltrib.com/sports/utah-utes/...tahs-utes/

Quote:Brant Kuithe happily looked around at the glorious scene at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night in the aftermath of the Utes’ 45-15 win over Colorado, taking in the whole of it, before running off the field, his work, their work, done.
...
Against the Buffs, Kuithe caught three passes, two for touchdowns, for 63 yards, and hauled the ball for another 59 rushing yards and a TD. After scoring the first touchdown, on a key play in the second quarter, with the count tied, Kuithe took a handoff from Huntley on a jet sweep and churned 44 yards to the Colorado 7-yard line. That’s correct. Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig called for a jet sweep not for some blurring, fly-weight wideout, rather for a 235-pound tight end.

Kuithe.

And he topped that off with the subsequent touchdown catch, giving the Utes a much-needed boost, bumping their lead to 14-7, which by the end of the half was extended to 17-7. His teammates took over from there. In that second quarter, Kuithe had 107 all-purpose yards, accounting for 66 percent of Utah’s entire offense.

Not bad for a kid who wasn’t even supposed to come to Utah. At Cinco Ranch High School, Kuithe ran for more than 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns in seven games during a senior season cut short by injury. He caught passes, returned kicks, and punted, averaging 40 yards per attempt. That was meager compared to what he amassed as a junior, when he rolled up 2,784 all-purpose yards. He also threw 30 passes that year. In addition, he was two-time academic all-district and he ran sprints for the track team (100- and 200-meters) and competed in the long jump and triple jump.

Kuithe was ticketed for Rice, alongside his twin brother, Blake, a defensive end. But Owls coach David Bailiff was fired after a 1-11 season in 2017, altering the Kuithe brothers’ plans.

They were enamored not just by Utah football, but by the mountains that surround it.

To Utah they came. ...

We were close to landing 3 or 4 in the top 40, but we still aren’t doing a good enough job landing kids from Houston. I think this is mostly due to our conference but we really won’t know until we have a couple 8+ win seasons in a row. [/align]

On this list there are kids going to Duke(41,42), GaTech(31), Vandy (33,43) and Princeton (50) before Rice.

I know we can’t recruit all the kids going to UH (21,24,26,35,60) UTSA(54,69), UNT(55,66,68), etc but Tulsa(56), and Tulane(57,59) are taking kids from our backyard.

Rice players on the list at 70, 73, 78, 100

I think we’re still in play for Warnell from Dickinson who’d be a top 40 guy.

We can take most people-It’s just a question of whether they can stay in school... We learned that lesson with Antonio Faaateete or whatever his name was.

I also maintain my theory that:

1) It’s easier for us to recruit in areas that AREN’T Houston as players in Houston view us as small-time compared to areas outside of Houston who perceive such an atmosphere.
2) There is more talent in the DFW area than the Houston area, and that has been proven out with our success on players from DFW vs. players from Houston.

Also would postulate that the average 2-4 star Texas player is overrated
