Fred made a habit of moving d-linemen to offense. If they didn't have the feet to play defense, he moved them across the ball. And he had a lot of success with it. Generally, you would not move one of your better d-linemen to offense.
It takes better athletes to play d-line. Therefore d-linemen are usually smaller and quicker. You can move a d-lineman who is not quite athletic enough over to offense with some success. Not so much moving the other way.
I really like Fred's approach, particularly because stud d-linemen are a lot harder to find. Recruit a lot of d-linemen, hoping to find a star via the numbers route, and move the ones who can't quite play defense over to offense.
David recruited more o-linemen than I would have. Some of his highest-ranked recruits were o-linemen, and some of those did not pan out. I'm not saying I would recruit d-linemen exclusively, but it wouldn't be far from that.

Maybe the coach sees something that I don't. At least he has been exposed to the position in the past. I don't care as long as we win

Floyd was recruited as an OL by most schools.

I guess we can go ahead and start that new 2021 recruiting thread as soon as our first commitment announces that he's an Owl...

Another current Owl who really didn't play much in 2019 (CB Joshua Landrum) is in the transfer portal.

RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
Didn't want to start a new thread as spring practice was cancelled (i think we got in a few though?), but I suppose we'll see the effects this fall of Fred's perspective as per Owl #s post below:

He made it no secret that he would like to excuse about half his juniors and seniors but he couldn't really do that. "The ones who know what we're trying to do don't get much benefit," he would say. "About the only thing that can happen one way or the other is for them to get hurt." I'm not sure I go that far, but there is certainly some merit to his idea.

Unfortunately no clear favorite emerged in the QB race, but we got a top 2 (and/or on Spring game depth chart). I feel OK with Johnson/Collins, both have good size and mobility. With an extra week that race could've been more clear. Per reports, the defense looked as expected. And some options may have emerged in the run game. So we're lucky have gotten some practices and a scrimmage in, though it's not a given there will be a 2020 season.

At the Roost reports Brad Rozner just got another year of eligibility from the NCAA so he's going to be classified as a junior in 2020. Good news although I'm still not sure if we'll see him for two more years at Rice.

Another member of the 2020 recruiting class was announced today as Boston College WR Christian McStravick (originally from Houston- Strake Jesuit HS) is going to graduate transfer to Rice. He'll have 2 years of eligibility. He's a 6-3 WR who had good numbers in high school but never could see the field much at BC due mostly to injuries (including a torn ACL).

About a month ago, Bloom had an interview with JP where he mentioned he had 3 more in the transfer pipeline but couldn't name names for compliance. Good to hear we closed the deal on one already.

Sounds like a big risk but I assume Bloom thinks his injury problems are behind him.
