In the context of a well conditioned, athletic type I would agree that summiting is preferable to Base Camp 2.

But in terms of NCAA athletics, Rice is not that paradigm of a fit mountaineer. More like the gimp-legged guy who has to take a wheelchair with him on the trek.

There are gimp legged, wheelchair bound mountaineers. All of them want to summit. Nobody wants to go halfway.

Yes there are. And, prior to the late 90's one could pretty much categorically state that another adjective-phrase described a huge, overwhelming number of that group --- dead and left as an ice block on a mountain somewhere.

I share this concern. Rice's 2019 schedule isn't good for a program that is trying to build itself up and improve recruiting. It isn't a schedule a good program should fear, so its kind of sad and embarrassing that it feels that way with a CUSA schedule. But it is honestly how I feel (and I think a fair assessment of where Rice is relative to the rest of the programs). Getting 4 or 5 wins would feel like a huge overachievement relative to current expectations. And 4-5 wins in CUSA is not good.

Commits are not signees, and even signees do not always stay. We can sell them on being a part of a Rice resurgence, but it helps if we can show them some of that.

Our commit list will be under heavy counter-recruiting from September to signing day. The better our recruiting, the more poaching we will have to withstand.

I understand most recruiting/transfers/etc. but I've gotta admit that I just don't understand this one. I fully understand flipping from a school like Rice to go to a school with a storied program or consistently good attendance or a Vandy/Northwestern type. But apart from playing in a good conference, Indiana is basically one of the biggest laughing stock power conference programs in the country. They're one of the very few schools that would confuse me along with Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and maybe one or two others. That said, hard to compete with the Big 10 allure and always a chance he just fell in love with the coaching staff.

Wasn’t he also the kid who said Michigan and Stanford were the only schools he would consider over Rice? I’m too lazy to find the quote for someone who decommitted

Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh probably has a better CFB history than all but 15-20 teams. It’s also a pretty good school academically.

I’d plug in Oregon State or Kansas before Pitt.

Pittsburgh won the ACC Coastal Division last season.

Good memory! Walt reported this on March 27:

Had offers from at least 5 P5 programs....and told Bloom on his last visit to St. Louis that the only school he'd even consider ahead of Rice would be Stanford, and at the time that included interest from Michigan.

If one doesn't care about quality/reputation of degree, then this makes total sense.

Recruits care about a variety of things in addition to the quality/reputation of degree - facilities, crowds, where their girl friend is going, coaches, distance from home, etc.

This off-season defection just shows how difficult it may be to hold on to our 2020 recruits if we suffer through an 0-12 or 1-11 campaign. Maybe Bloom cannot magically create wins. But he was supposed to be able to. If ever he can lead a team to wins that they were not supposed to get, now is the time.

Brady McBride, who was committed to us in the 2018 class before flipping to Memphis, has announced he’s heading to TxSt.

Would’ve been good to get another chance at him.

Your comments explain exactly why I have one thought about assembling a coaching staff. If I were coming in as a head coach, I would hire an OC, DC, and special teams coordinator that I trusted implicitly, and then fill out the staff with HS coaches, preferably at least some with connections to the university, and tell them to recruit, recruit, recruit. You obviously have your hand on the pulse of a lot that is going on in the HS ranks around Houston, and that information would be extremely valuable on a staff. Additionally, you know what it takes to make it at Rice. And I tend to believe that HS coaches are probably the best teachers at any level. University level is all about recruiting, pros are all about talent, HS coaches have to take what they get and make it work.
