I think Butch follows Rick Minter's path, i.e. never a head coach again.

He's 50 years old. Has a reputation for being aloof and a goofball. I don't think any 'smart' AD would risk his future on him, but it takes only one person to like you.

I could see a MAC school or CUSA school looking at his success at Central Michigan and Cincinnati and giving him a change.

Butch was desperately looking for another job from the moment he got on our campus. Leaving us to go to MSU or ND? Understandable. TN is not on that level. The fans are crazy and they think they’re an elite program but no one who lives in reality agrees with that. They’re a second tier program that won once in recent memory by recruiting off of Payton Manning. Butch got what he deserved when he jumped there.

...but it was clearly his dream job, growing up in Michigan.

Not so sure. Times are different now than they were just 15 years ago with coaches turning over every 2-3 years. As someone else pointed out I can see someone taking a stab at him downstream.

The other thing I would add is unlike Jones, Minter actually was a successful d-coordinator prior to being a HC. Not so sure Butch’s ego would let him be someone’s WR coach for the next 10-15 years

He's the biggest fraud for sure. The guy literally knows nothing about football if you really listen to him. It's all slogans and sayings to cover up how clueless he is about the game.

I'm guessing the following (from the article) gets to the heart of why it stings so much for anyone at UT who ever supported him:

When I read a quote, such as this one, I think back to what a coach's wife once told me. Coach's are only care about your program when they are employed there. Once they leave they could care less. While I do not think this statement is always true, since most coaches have one foot out the door sometimes, these players need to realize they are a cog in a coach's career. A coach will blow some serious smoke and could care less about the players they leave behind. UT is now learning this for the second time, Kiffin being the first.

They're kind of ignoring that Ut fired him. LOL

That said, i could see a non P5 school looking at him. His results have been pretty good. He's definitely guilty though of chasing the money and risking things on an iffy situation in Tennessee. That said, it's his call.

Does anyone know the real story on why Butch wanted out of Clifton? I've heard a bunch of different reasons, but ... they are all different.

Wearing my Bearcat colored glasses, outside of their P5 status, Colorado & Purdue were similar to UC. He lucked out immensely with the timing of Tennessee's opening.

Like I said in an earlier post, Butch has a reputation for being a different cat - no pun intended. Will be interesting to see what Saban does with him when an opening presents itself on the Bama staff.

I don't disagree about Lyle. The only thing I'll say in defense of UT is that the exact same things were being parroted by EVERYONE about Alabama back in 06'-07'. You had the embarrassing Dennis Francione debacle followed up by Shula going .500 and getting canned for cheating. Spurrier, Schiano, Cutcliff, and Rich Rod had all turned 'Bama down because of the dumpster fire it was.

Resources, support, and the right coach and they became what they are. UT has resources and support. Get the right guy, and they absolutely could be title contenders again.

Sorry, but for me Brian Kelly will always be my least favorite UC coach. What a snake oil salesman.

Who gave UC the greatest three years of my sports viewing life. 2007-2009 was simply magic... and I'll always appreciate BK for it. I may have spent every last bit of my disposable income on UC trips to Birmingham, Norman, Syracuse, Piscataway, Tampa, Louisville, Morgantown, Huntington, Akron, Nola, Miami, Pittsburgh, etc....but it was well worth it.

Thank you. Hate that he left UC. Couldn’t say the same about any other football coach.

Agreed. UT is a great job in the world of college football. This is a top 15 all time winning % program that plays in a 100k+ seat stadium. They've also won a National Championship in the last 20 years (with Tee Martin, not Peyton Manning - common misconception). I don't see why the right coach couldn't be successful there. Even Butch was able to pull in a couple of top 10 recruiting classes there (even top 5 one year IIRC). Unfortunately he couldn't coach.

End of the Big East/BCS automatic qualifier status for UC. He wanted to go somewhere he had a shot at competing for the national championship.

If the end of the BCS had not happened he would not have interviewed for Colorado or Purdue--- TN, on the other hand was a lot of money to turn down.

I agree it was a great time in UC History, just hated the way it happened. With all the "I'm happy here, why would I leave?" and the "Don't listen to the media, Believe me" text just before the announcement. Had he just kept his mouth shut and left, I would have been ok with it. Like Dantonio. No issues with him leaving for MSU. He did the same thing when he left Central Michigan for us. When we hired CBJ and took CM's coach for the second time, I went to their fan page to see what they were saying, and they ALL wished CBJ luck and said "At least he didn't do what Brian Kelly did, saying he was happy here and why would he leave, only to leave the next day". There is a right way and a wrong way to leave a school and Dantonio did it right, Kelly did it wrong.

Hate the game, not the player. It is literally impossible for a coach of a ranked team to move on to a new job without appearing to lie to someone. He's asked hundreds of time to describe a situation that is continually changing. The truthful answer will be different every day, and he's effectively prohibited from discussing the truth anyways in most situations.

My thoughts exactly. What was he supposed to do before the Pitt game? "Guys...just so you know before the biggest game in UC football history...I think I'm going to Notre Dame."

I think I dislike butch jones more than tubby. Least favorite coach for UC since I’ve been alive.

I def feel the same. His con job is much less recognized than Tubs. If you think about it - he's never even won a conference title outright. Unless i'm missing something he did at CMU...which i don't care to google cuz, CMU. who cares...

I realize Tubby tanked us in a way that CBJ didnt, however he at least recruited kids who are playing on the next level and keeping that flame going. Also, there was something that just irked the H E L L outta me how he would lose all the decisive/ meaningful conference games.
