Kennesaw played their first FBS team this year. They didn't go between the hedges or to downtown Atlanta. They played and almost beat Georgia State from the Sunbelt. Not a big paycheck game but it was a reasonable step up.
I could have been ok with that. They built their program differently and are more advanced that we war. Plus we bring in a new coach who benches a 3 year starter quarterback and basically starts from scratch on offense. If we had advanced our program like that I would have been supportive of playing a Georgia State type of program.

Did Fulmer arrange this game as a talking point to distract from what he wasn’t doing while drawing the big check?

Bucfan81- The players don't agree with you and I don't either. Talked to parents of players and several players. The players said they were excited to play this game. They said they had been looking forward to this game from the day it was announced.
Positives
Helps prepare team for conference games.
Helps recruiting both athletes, band members and students.
National exposure that university couldn't buy
Lifetime memories for all parties, athletes, coaches, band, parents, students, alumni and fans.
$500 thousand to help pay for improvements such as 120 yds of indoor practice turf for dome, increasing recruiting budgets, etc
Negatives
99% chance of loss, regardless of who the FBS opponent is.
Injuries- risk in any game. No evidence or facts that prove players get injured more playing FCS or FBS.
These are just my thoughts on playing 'money games'

Fulmer had nothing to do with scheduling game. Scott Carter was the one who was responsible for arranging the game.
Thank you, Scott.

I do not disagree with playing fbs money games as we have to. I just do not believe we should have done it while we are building towards fcs. We lost to seven fcs schools last year and I wanted to beat these teams first.

I agree with your comment, Bucfan81. But we have to grab this game whenever it is available. Sure, we were not yet ready to play an SEC team (even a mediocre one), but you have to grab it when you can.

I understand completely and should always grab a chance like that. But I was hurt that we are not yet ready. I was hoping for more improvement this year and will have to wait.

Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea with these games. Need to schedule them for the money on the one hand with a 99% sure beating on the other. And, the money difference between these two athletic departments is wider than the deep blue sea making it likely one of the most one sided football games of the decade. How would Tennesse do against the New England Patriots?

After watching the game in slow motion and replaying several times the ut big plays, was definitely encouraged by the defense. Front seven, for all but a few plays, when we lost containment, held their own. The back end, DB's and Safeties did not run with receivers, looking at the QB and letting receivers get behind them and lost containment on run plays. These problems can be corrected with coaching and reps.
The OL showed improvement and did a much better job on pass protection, no sacks, some hurries, but against a SEC team what do you expect.
Running game, not much. Two runs over 10 yds, a few 4-5 yarders, no turnovers, no negative yds. Salyer looks to have the moves and speed to be a big play threat. Had a 22yd run and a screen pass for 18 yds.
Receivers caught the ball when they had the opportunity. TE Werts caught 3 passes, two for first downs. Wide outs were open deep on three occasions but passes were off target.
QB was poor. Missed open receivers on all deep balls. Consistently threw high and behind receivers causing incompletions, tipped balls and interceptions.
Kick-Off teams - No problems.
Punt team - gave up TD on a blocked punt.
Receiving team - gave up TD on fumbled punt.
Defense looks to have the players to be one of the best in SoCon. Had to stay on field to long. Put in bad position by offensive and special team turnovers.
Offense still a work in progress. OL has improved, RB's better than in yrs past. Wide Outs were open on at least three deep balls, open on two crossing routes, throws were bad.
Bucs will be better this year if they eliminate the mistakes and get better play from the QB position.
Good assessment. The full replay is on SEC+ channel.

This was the first time anyone on the team other than 2-3 guys had ever played big time D1 speed and size. There is no preparation for it. Next year when we play Vandy and App we will be slightly less shell-shocked, hopefully.

Nothing negative or disrespectful intended, but in order to step it up a notch and put more in the winning column, Sanders must recruit bigger, stronger, and faster if he is to break out of the Torbush mold of mediocrity. Of course he knows this and is working on it. Has he made any statements about this, revealed a plan of action?

He did mention on his radio show that we have many players on our team that are there because they could not play anywhere else. We have to change that to fully recruited FCS level players in order to compete in SoCon or before taking on FBS teams. I think he if fully aware of our problem.

A real reason to have the FBS designation — Georgia paid Middle Tennessee $1.7 million to come to Athens to get their butts handed to them on a $$$$$ platter.

And it looks like they’ll also get $1.2 million for playing Kentucky in November. Those kinds of games would probably pay for the difference between FBS and FCS for us, if we met the minimum attendance to go with it. Still not sure if it’s worth it, but it might be.
