RE: Endowed Head Coaching position
Endowments aren't created for a specific coach. It just frees up money in the department budget since Rice doesn't have to cover the endowed coach's salary.

Great news as this might inspire others to donate as well. First Patterson and now this...good positive movement.
Except no.
Tulsa may have had donors pony up for the bill but that is totally different from an endowment.

RE: Endowed Head Coaching position
For the conspiracy theorists out there who thought FB days may be numbered as the frog is now boiled in pot of water after decades of neglect/mismanagement, this is a big strike against that.
Congrats to JK and Coach B. Big W for a program in desperate need of a W. Us little minnows do matter but finding the big whales matters more during times like these. Now if we could only get Doerr to do his best T-Boone impersonation?
For next podcast, someone needs to ask JK what he does w/ the savings? Does Bloomgren have a voice given he was part of this? Do the donors get a voice? Does JK a) pocket it in the budget to reduce $10M University contribution, b) fund other things in FB such as assistants, recruiting, etc., c) fund other expenses in athletics budget or d) other (e.g., facilities, capital projects, catalyst for bigger athletic endowment, etc.)

Possibly a game changer for Rice. Good job, JK and Bloomgren. Thank you, Dunlevie Family.
Hoping this creates a bond or duty so that Bloomgren sticks around for a while if successful.

Good questions. Hope it's both b) and d), and add funds for marketing to get more fans. Most if not all the money saved by this should belong to the football program.

Well, in fairness, Stanford had a couple endowment gifts in excess of $100MM each.
I know, all I’m saying is that this is a step on the way there.
Articles I've seen imply there are fewer than ten FBS programs with endowed HC. Good to be ahead of a trend for a change.
Now 5. Stanford, Northwestern, Norte Dame, Michigan, and now Rice.
*This* is the type of company we belong in. Thank you, Dunlevies!
Sure seems unlikely that big time smart money like this gets put in without having seen greater plans on a drawing board somewhere than just being content with where we are conference-wise. I guess right now it takes 8 figures to get a peek at those plans ;-) but doesn't the playbook for big campaigns state that you wait to launch in public until you get about half of your goal raised in private?
Very hopeful this major, major donation is a sign that at some point a bigger ask of the Rice community is coming...and that we are coming for Stanford, not just trying to be the top irrelevant program in the country.

Honestly, assuming that the days are numbered due to the frog analogy is the logical progression, not the conspiracy one. There are few failures that last as long as Rice athletics, be it in professional sports, TV, industry etc.
The continued existence of Rice football despite continued embarrassment and increasing fiscal losses actually lends itself to more conspiracy theories than the lack of; more a strongman fronted side project than anything else.
Hopefully this endowment signifies the end of the latter. Success or lack thereof shouldn't hinge on some cronies and their wagon hitching pocketbooks.

My thoughts exactly. Thank you to the Dunlevies for their generosity. Hopefully the first of many similar such endowments!

Thanks for posting those links, Tiki. Great stuff.
I'm actually getting excited about this season. More than I've been in years.

I've been thinking today that this probably goes a long way to getting us back to par the woeful regression in the C-USA media deal. We may be up to AAC-level funding. That's essential if we're going to hang with SMU and Tulane for recruits.

This is an additional $1 million or so per year. If I remember correctly they all receive 3-4 million per year for TV rights.

I hope we can improve on WBB coaching salaries and assistants. Coach Langley is building a tremendous program. Rice needs to keep her whatever it takes.
