Rice becomes latest FBS program to endow its football head coaching position, source told @WatchStadium. Bruce & Elizabeth Dunlieve will endow the Dunlieve Family Head Coach at Rice. Other programs w/endowed coaching positions include Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame & Stanford
Interesting.
It's none of my business, but I'm very curious what the annual revenue is from this endowment.
4.5% of whatever the balance of the endowment is.

Such funding gifts are usually the coordinated efforts of the regional Development Officer (or the team lead for all the regional officers, who is currently Ginny Jones) and the Assistant AD for Development, who is currently Brian Mann. I know Brian and Ginny work VERY closely on such efforts.

Look, they wouldn't have held a press conference to announce the endowment if the initial contribution and 4.5% annual payout-- was not sufficient to cover Bloomgren's current salary. This means the gift was likely 8 figures in size. Quite the gift.

Itd likely have to be upwards of 20,000,000 if his entire current salary is covered.

Well, in fairness, Stanford had a couple endowment gifts in excess of $100MM each.

I think Stanford's athletic endowment is north of half a B.
How about some of those companies Dunlieve capitalized - wow !

Articles I've seen imply there are fewer than ten FBS programs with endowed HC. Good to be ahead of a trend for a change.

Now 5. Stanford, Northwestern, Norte Dame, Michigan, and now Rice.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but endowing a coaching position does almost give you more job security. I wonder if the Dunlevies knew Bloomgren to begin with in Palo Alto, and whether that helped their decision? Probably not but it may have not hurt either.

Bloomgren in his press conference said that he knew the Dunlevies while at Stanford and said, if I heard him correctly, that the gift reflected confidence in Rice’s commitment to D1 football, AND an endorsement of Bloomgren himself.
****Actual quote...
“As Joe mentioned, I am now the Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach at Rice University and that title means so much to me. It means so much to me because of my relationship with Bruce and Elizabeth, but it really signifies how much they believe in myself and the direction of this program and going forward the things that we are going to accomplish and it does mean everything to us”

Why does it? The position is endowed, not the occupant.
Also I'm not sure how one can have MORE job security than Rice already offers.
To the broader topic
1. Excellent decision and great use of a donation
2. What's the bet on the next JK podcast someone will submit a Q on exactly how well endowed this is

RE: Endowed Head Coaching position
Would Bloomgren go from an endowed position at Rice to say Duke or Tulsa (just to use the two most recent examples of head coaches who left Rice football) for a position that didn't have that prestigious title? Maybe - maybe, not. But I do wonder if it gives the head coach an attachment to Rice that he might not have otherwise? The other schools that have endowed coaches haven't had a turnover for whatever that's worth.

Seems like that question has sort of been floated in this thread and/or the gift isn’t really that big. On twitter in a thread announcing the gift someone (not a Rice person)
said oh, it was just someone paying Bloomgren’s salary instead of the University. The lack of understanding what an endowed gift is, is staggering.

The press release very clearly states the previous relationship between the Dunlevies and Coach Bloom while he was at Stanford. She's a Stanford alum and he's was chair of the Stanford Association for awhile.

Looks like he's a venture capitalist in the Bay Area. Elizabeth had ties to Stanford's medical school, and looks like they might have a son playing water polo at Stanford, and might have endowed some water polo coaching positions.
We competed against each other in intramurals, but I wasn't aware of his literary side. He was a well-known leader on campus.
Thank-you Dunlevies!

I think this is how Tulsa got Graham to come there from Rice through a private endownment. Regardless, fantastic news. I wish they would support an endownment for Coach Langley for WBB.
