Last year's prediction wasn't that bad. He whiffed on SMU but they had a lot of injuries. Houston played better than expected mostly due to Rob Gray. Memphis and Tulsa both ended up better than he predicted.
A 9th place prediction last year seemed about right considering we had replaced most of the team with JUCO's. That makes the prediction this year a little crazier since we kept most of the best players from last year and added a top recruiting class.
The players returning managed 2 sub #88 RPI wins. The newcomers will have to carry the load.
Memphis was 4-10 vs. the RPI 100
Only Cinci, WSU and Houston were better...
So I think you are overstating the RPI numbers a bit especially picking an arbitrary number to make it look as bad as possible.

I agree to a certain extent but I feel that he is not familiar with the tremendous success most of our recruits have had; let’s face it- our freshmen will make or break our season. Former NBA coaches don’t have a great track record and I think some CBB writers resent them coming into CBB.
That being said I believe in Penny.

A cardinal sin for media members is admitting errors unless absolutely cornered because they must protect their treasured credibility. Instead, on the rare occasions they discuss something they got wrong, they will point to changing circumstances no less predictable than an Act of God.

But many of the players from those teams aren't there now.
WSU essentially lost 7 of their top 9. UH lost Gray and Devin Davis. UC lost the AAC POY (Clark) and a 1st round NBA pick (Evans). SMU lost Milton, Emegelu, and Agau.
Memphis returns the most points of any AAC team and brings in the highest rated recruiting class.
That is a good sign.

This is so true since most writers are friends with the very coaches who miss out on jobs due to guys like Penny. Many of these coaches were GA and 3rd assistant who served as good sources to feed them info and the writers write Love fest for them so they can get jobs or look like the next hit candidate. Penny success may mean others copy and thier friends could possibly be out of a job.

Tubby wasn’t a great coach; decent at best overall. I remember the Iowa game early in his tenure at Memphis when we got a big lead and they started pressing us and Martin was Tubby’s primary ball handler. Martin did not keep the ball to the center of the floor or pass over an extended D but, time after time, would go to the trap spots (where the half court and sideline act as two additional defenders) and pull up his dribble. We had a ton of turnovers and were very fortunate that Iowa was not very good or disciplined that season. That’s just one example.

I distinctly remember the game and was shocked at lack of any scheme to break the pressure. That was a neutral court tourney. Don’t know who was keeping up with turnovers but he was asleep. how likely do you think a below average team has that many possessions with no PG and has 7 turnovers? I will see if I can find it on YouTube.
I find it baffling but at the same time repugnant at the glee of posters when they THINK they have caught another poster’s mistake. What is the fun of it? You hide behind a keyboard and act like the Romans at Coliseum during death matches. Are we all Tigers fans here are there SEC and other schools trolls baiting us? Because if this is all Tigers fans, our fan base sucks.

What’s arbitrary about cutting off at a decent number. Beating the 88th ranked team was not to be crowing about. This 1-100 RPI rankings are broken down into groups of 25 on most good sites. 1-25, 26-50, etc.
Giving you two extremes. You win 4 games in the last group 75-100 and another teams wins 2 in first group and 2 in second group. Both won 4 games vs top 100 of RPI. Big difference tho.

I doubt R'stein gave our conference much thought...just sayin.
We are a 2--3 bid league...lol
And 2 of our 3 went out in the first round. smh
UC: made history in losing a 22-point second-half lead, the largest such post-halftime comeback in NCAA Tournament annals. Nevada also tied the second-biggest comeback in NCAA Tournament history...
WSU: The 13th-seeded Marshall Thundering Herd pulled off the first upset of Friday's action at the 2018 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, defeating the No. 4 seed Wichita State Shockers 81-75.
At least Houston didn't totally coug it.
That being said, I fully expect Penny to put us back on the radar screen.

Basically the media is saying, we simply don't know.
There are just too many unknown factors for us to pick. Memphis looks decent on paper, but their coaching staff is new. No telling if Martin is coming back healthy and they are breaking in a bunch of new players.
Is it ridiculous for them to pick us 8th, yes. Is it so ridiculous that it makes the writer seem like he knows nothing about basketball, I wouldn't go that far. I can honestly see us anywhere from 1-6. If the coaches are as good as we think they'll be and the new players add depth and talent to what is returning, then top part of the conference is almost guaranteed in my eyes.

I agree there are unknown factors with the roster, but the same factors exist to varying degrees for teams ranked ahead of us. Which AAC team(s) possess the mix of talent (2 years consecutive #1 AAC classes and last year was not close) and experience (4 of top 5 leading scorers and rebounders return)? There cannot be seven schools better than us in that regard.
The reason for, IMO, Rothstein’s low ranking is his disparaging opinion of Penny and staff. Ironically, last year his low ranking was due to the roster (assuming he fawns over Tubby like most of the national media). The other option is he hates Memphis.

Iowa vs. Memphis
Memphis won 100-92
Jeremiah Martin stats: 14 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, 2 turnovers
Memphis team stats: 7 turnovers
Good memory...
And you're arguing with the official game statistician.
You know what that does to your cred, don't you??
