MyBB Rothstein predicts Memphis will finish 8th in conference
He doesn't give a reason but also tweeted that Memphis has three of the five best incoming freshmen. Maybe the coaching change? Guess he thinks Penny will be that bad or Tubby that good ---- or some of both.

that just seems odd

Rothstein is a well-respected CBB writer

if this had been Seth Davis, I'd be less surprised

People are entitled to their opinions. We’ll know more once the season starts, but I can’t see us coming in 8th. The league as a whole seems to be down from last year and we’ve improved (in both talent and depth). At least a few teams dealt with injuries last year, but we got bit by the injury bug as well. Many predicted us 9th or worse last year and they were wrong then too.

Obviously, Rothstein has a low opinion of Penny and staff’s coaching ability.

I like the low placement. I think it will prevent complacency and increase motivation.

If you take off the Tiger Blue sunglasses there is sufficient reason to believe the team THIS YEAR will continue to be mediocre. We return one all-conference type player, and only one other that is a proven legitimate front-line player (although we can argue that Parks is serviceable as well).

We are all banking on significant contributions from first year players that we believe will be better than last year's players, and better than the average for their position in our conference. I believe most of the incoming freshmen will be serviceable from day one, providing us with a 8-9 players that are decent players. I also believe that Davenport and Martin will be all-conference types, so we will finish well above the middle of the pack.

However, if the freshmen all play like freshmen and either Davenport or Martin goes down, we may have a very long year of player development and not much else.

We are the perfect fanbase to troll—somewhat unsure of ourselves but still standing strong in our Memphis Tiger pride.

And Rothstein is the perfect troll—he’s even beginning to resemble one as he ages. lol

I mean. I get this. But we finished 5th last year and made the conference semi-finals. We don't really lose much and brought in a very good recruiting class. I'm all for pumping the breaks on the freshmen being all-conference talent right out of the box, but at the very least you would think we're not going to regress and 4th or 5th would be the "reasonable" take on how we do next year.

Do you have his 1-7 ranked teams? I want to see who he thinks is better than MEMPHIS.

I could see any one of those 7 teams having a better year than us. All 7 having a better season than us is a stretch.

No way Davenport will be all-conference

unless he transfers to another conference.

I wouldn't go that far...

He will have to improve his usage and stay as efficient as he was this year. Hopefully his 3 point shot improves (35%) and he will likely get more open looks this year due to more playmakers.

It is possible but his personality doesn't scream alpha dog.

Davenport may well prosper in a higher tempo system, should get lots of touches and minutes. He averaged 13+ and 6+ last year.. he was 14th in the conf in ppg last year, 8th in rpg, 16 & 8 is reasonable and should get him 3rd team. albeit this is best case and would likely mean some of the new guys are not producing.

True...

Cinci...We looked like we didn't belong on the floor with them last year same with WSU...

So they may have lost a lot but they were also soooooooooo much better than us last year. So both of those are possible

Houston...I don't see them being as strong as last year and I see us being at least as good.

SMU will be better than last year
UCF will be much better than last year

UConn new coach good talent...Same boat as us. Who knows.
Temple...I have no idea.

So all are possible but for everyone of them to finish ahead of us I would say we have underperformed.
