Which AAC school(s) have a better mix of talent and experience and projected depth than the Tigers? Rothstein is definitely doubting Penny’s ability.

Doesn’t temple have a new coach in Aaron McKie? Is he more of a coach than Penny?

Dunphy will coach this season and then retire. Still not a lot of talent at Temple.

In sum, he trashes Penny. Rothstein thinks we will have strong indivudual talent, but Penny cannot harness it.

Being apprehensive about his success should be normal.

I think 1983 is inferring that Rothstein must think coaching will be an issue since Jon listed 3 Tigers on the newcomers list, as well as Martin on the All-Conference Team. As others have questioned....how does that happen?

So we have 4 stud players (not including Davenport, Parks or other new guys), but yet we’re gonna come in 8th? The only way I can see that happening is if we’re a disorganized mess on the defensive side of the ball.

Logically his tweets don’t make sense. If those 3 freshmen are good and Martin is All-Conference (apart from something catastrophic) there is no way we come in eighth place.

Honestly it sounds like classic media speak where he’s hedging his bet. “I picked them 8th because of the new coach, but I told you Memphis had some good players.”

Honestly I do not think he put that much effort into it...

Looked at recruiting rankings for the freshmen team...

Looked at who was coming back and how the team traditionally performed for ranking teams...I would bet that many here know more about the AAC then he does.

This is all about Tubby love. I loved Tubby too until he was my coach. He has to be the most over-rated and under=performing coach since Dale Brown and Norm Stewart.

He is the returning leading scorer in the AAC and is first rate on defense.

I agree to a certain extent but I feel that he is not familiar with the tremendous success most of our recruits have had; let’s face it- our freshmen will make or break our season. Former NBA coaches don’t have a great track record and I think some CBB writers resent them coming into CBB.

That being said I believe in Penny.

Tubby wasn’t a great coach; decent at best overall. I remember the Iowa game early in his tenure at Memphis when we got a big lead and they started pressing us and Martin was Tubby’s primary ball handler. Martin did not keep the ball to the center of the floor or pass over an extended D but, time after time, would go to the trap spots (where the half court and sideline act as two additional defenders) and pull up his dribble. We had a ton of turnovers and were very fortunate that Iowa was not very good or disciplined that season. That’s just one example.

Iowa vs. Memphis
Memphis won 100-92
Jeremiah Martin stats: 14 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, 2 turnovers
Memphis team stats: 7 turnovers

It's July, and he's a college basketball writer. To get clicks, he can either do a 2019 NBA mock draft, or do power rankings.

He should change the name of his rankings to Power Fail.

Last year's prediction wasn't that bad. He whiffed on SMU but they had a lot of injuries. Houston played better than expected mostly due to Rob Gray. Memphis and Tulsa both ended up better than he predicted.

A 9th place prediction last year seemed about right considering we had replaced most of the team with JUCO's. That makes the prediction this year a little crazier since we kept most of the best players from last year and added a top recruiting class.

Yep. That and some of the other teams had some major losses.

I'll throw mine in:

Gonna be some groans, but...

(assuming health and eligibility of those expected to play)

1) UCF
2) Memphis
3) Houston
4) UConn
5) Cinci
6) Temple
7) Tulsa
8) SMU
9) Wichita State
10) Tulane
11) ECU
12) USF

I really think the top five is a free for all.

UConn was awful last year but they had a 5* guy out the whole season and return Jaylen Adams and add Aubrun xfer (and 16 ppg leading scorer) Mustapha Heron to go along with three other returning starters. Plus Hurley >>> Ollie.

UCF will (if healthy) return Fall and Taylor along with five other guys who had rotation minutes and add Dawkins and a 6-10 xfer to play some minutes at C when Fall is out.

Houston loses Gray and Devin Davis but returns Corey Davis, their PG (Robinson), Armoni Brooks, Fabian White, as well as adding two UMass transfers.

Cinci loses HUGE pieces in Kyle Washington, Jacob Evans, and AAC POY Gary Clark. They will have to rely on Cumberland, Justin Jennifer, and Cane Broome to pick up the slack.
Does anyone else feel that Taylor at UCF should be about 31 years old by now!!

Temple lost 2 of their top scorers off of a middle of the pack AAC team last year. They landed 2 decent recruits that I wouldn’t expect to light the world on fire. Did another transaction happen up there that I’m unaware of? With the info above (by itself) I don’t see the Owls at 5.
