The Temple stadium situation is just sad. Just glad my school isn't in that situation. The Georgia Dome was just fine, but nothing tops having your own building.

I really don’t think it’s the space around Temple that would be the issue. The school wound up buying real estate adjacent to it, and has been doing so for some time. Any location issue is more road infrastructure. Expanding/broadening the likes of Broad Street/611, 309, or US 1 toward that end of town. From the north/west, also not great. Personally, the Northeast, along US 1? All those old , now vacated plants and warehouses? That’s probably the best space, but it’s less accessible from campus to get there than out to the Linc.

I think the issue is not having a void enough relationship with the city and state to override neighborhood rancor. We got some neighborhood opposition but between the city, the University leadership and Carter Development it was managed in a way that the unruly minority where outnumbered by those welcoming us when they realized the transformation we were bringing to the neighborhood.

With the exception of his executive team, Ruiz has kept his stadium plans close to the vest. So far, he says, he has contracted HKS Architects — the firm behind SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, which hosted Super Bowl LVI in February — to design plans for a 65,000-seat stadium on the west side of Tropical Park. The entrepreneur has dreams of the stadium including space for graduate-level classrooms and water fixtures to make it the premier venue for Miami's premier private university. He says the plans are due out next week.

What about going in with the Beckham group and building a 35-40k seat stadium for Inter and UM?

Ohio is a great venue...sure the stadium is kinda disjointed but a fun experience. I truly enjoyed going there for a game.

On why its disjointed, a long story.

The original Peden was supposed to be a 29,000 seat horseshoe but was built with only 12,000 seats in phase I.

In the 70's Ohio had a coach that wanted to build a new 30,000+ seat stadium something like ECU had at the time. But then he died prematurely in 1978 and so that idea died with him.

In the 80's the horseshoe idea was revitalized instead of a new stadium only they built half of it due to funding leaving a gap in the middle. Raised capacity to 19,000. To be more modern they decided to not connect the horseshoe to the main stands.

In the 90's they decided to go taller and built a tower with a small deck of premium seats to get capacity up to 20,000. The thought was why put so many seats in the end zone when you could do it along the sideline.

In 2001 instead of going up to add more sideline seats the administration thought it would be better move down, lower the field to improve sidelines. Added lowered the field by 10 feet and increased capacity to 24,000 that also created victory hill, the start of a full bowl.

Then in 2015 the president of the time thought the stadium would look better if it was a bowl instead of decks. They completed the horseshoe with party decks to increase the stadium to 27,000. Its now about an 85% bowl with gaps.

Current AD wants more expansion but its unclear to me whether she wants to go in the direction of bowl or deck.

Most stadiums are designed with expansion strategy in mind but instead of following a plan they've made incremental renovations, usually around a program need. They have been careful to not over do it on the capacity. At the same time they would like to posture it up as large as what they can, make it feel huge.

5,000 more seats would be right on the money. There are games with 10,000 students but the student section only seats 7,000. Also had games SRO 4,000 over the amount of actual seats. Walk up tickets were $55 for Kansas and we have WVU and Iowa St coming in the next few years. 3,000 more student seats and 2,000 more chairbacks, IMO.

The university has approximately 90 days to meet with the Mas/Beckham group to see if they want to join the project, but they need to hurry so architects and engineering can adjust designs to have the venue open by March 2025, plus their Hard Rock Stadium lease runs until 2032.

I'm absolutely in love with SMU's stadium expansion. Getting that 50 million dollar gift was a gamechanger.

Ruiz doesn't sound like a guy who would settle for sharing with a soccer team. If he's willing to pay for a stadium then he's gonna want it done his way.

Supply chain issues? in Hawai'i? NO WAY!!! 03-drunk

I don’t know where the $400 million figure came from. I’d like it to be true, but according to this morning’s Honolulu newspaper the new biennial budget formally approved yesterday by the Hawaii legislature authorizes only $350 million in bond funding for replacing Aloha Stadium. That’s the same amount approved a couple of years ago, before the pandemic caused the legislature to panic and cut the funding in half.

The governor said a couple of weeks ago that he supports moving ahead with the project, so his approval should be a formality.

Now it’s up to the state’s Department of Accounting and General Services to get the construction RFP out, and then we’ll see what the bidding development teams will commit to build for $350 million. My prediction: due to cost inflation during the two-year delay coupled with no increase to the funding amount, we’ll be lucky to get a 25K seat replacement stadium rather than the 35K originally planned (i.e. just half of Aloha Stadium’s 50K capacity). Hopefully I’m wrong and the winning bidder can do better.
