I think the WAC needs to get another school call up soon. Even if they get Tarleton State to agree to move up at the same time as Dixie State? They would have another school. They need to do this not just because of UMKC to SL, but Chicago State is in an even worst shape as than Western Illinios.
Normally I try not to reply to your nonsense, but this is just too dumb to leave alone. You know the MVC is based around more than geography, right?
Well, if Western or any of those guys were private, they’d have the votes. Is that what the current MVC is based on? Certainly isn’t program quality.

Actually, the current MVC seems to be based proximity to Chicago, Illinois. The closer you are to it, the more likely you are to become a MVC member.

They want success on the court and a public-private balance. That's basically it, in that order. Keep the privates happy and work your way to being a multi-bid league every few years or so. The mantra before the Creighton/Wooshock defections was "Not another Evansville." They're not interested in a loser program like WIU that's in the middle of nowhere and considers finishing above 300th in the RPI as a good year.

Evansville was a program that just fell off a rock in the 2000s. Before that they were a rock solid, top drawing program. Even then they still have a top notch facility.

I feel the MVC is more based towards St.Louis hence the close proximity to most conference members except Loyola and Valparaiso

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
Congratulations Auggie on winning the D2 softball national championship! They finished the season 61-11 and were the unanimous #1 team in the national poll.
(Why did I reach back 8 pages to bump this thread? Some people remember how terrible Auggie was in the North Central Conference days and don't want anything to do with them. I think this shows that they have upped their game...at least at the D2 level. Last year their baseball team won the D2 national championship. Their men's basketball team won the natty in 2016. Women's basketball was Final Four in 2013. Men's wrestling was runner up in 2005 & 2010.)

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
Depends on what happens with St. Thomas. If the NCAA gives them (and them alone, David) the okay to go from D3 to D1, the Summit will take them over Augustana.
If not, Augustana has a 50-50 shot of being invited.

No mention of maybe joining the WAC if the Summit move doesn’t happen.

Good. Everything about them screams "D2" and the conference is too Dakota-centered as it is.

Nobody wanted Augie when UST entered the picture. Augie could go DI in hockey to the CCHA, as college hockey is above their USHL team, which gets great attendance. Augie would build up their fan base as neither USD nor SDSU have hockey.
When UST eventually gets their coveted MVC bid, Augie will replace them.

maybe the Summit should add both St.Thomas and Augustana. More conferences are doing 11 teams for the 20 gm conf. schedule. Plus if the MVC ever goes to 11-12, dominoes will fall. Horizon went to 11 to protect or for the 20 gm schedule.

With the Dixie State and Tareleton State additions I don't think the WAC feels it needs another footprint-stretching addition.

Why bother? They don't have a major media contract and bodybag games make more for most of the teams than home games. Maybe if the conference as a whole has a renaissance and passes the Horizon in strength they should.

St Thomas and Creighton used to be in the same conference as the Dakota's. The future is a lot like the past. Now, a game in St Paul is a big part of the season for a number of reasons as a big chunk of Dakota students come from the Cities.
St Thomas will become a bigger name than Creighton in athletic circles.
The big question with Augie is how many billions will T Denny Sanford give them and how many millions will become in each Summit school get for voting them is.

Dixie St is in Utah and Tarleton is near Dallas. Augustana would be a stretch, but better option than Chicago State

In terms of pure mileage as well as competition quality, but it's a hell of a lot easier to actually travel to Chicago than to Sioux Falls.

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
WAC should grab Colorado Mesa to lure Metro State to join.
Summit do have some additional options besides Saint Thomas and Augustana to pair schools up.
Fort Hays State or Colorado-Colorado Springs to pair with Denver.
Central Oklahoma pair with Oral Roberts.
Washburn or Missouri Western pair with UMKC.
Not sure who would pair with Western Illinois, but Saint Thomas would be close to them.

1) Both Colorado-Mesa and Metro State have declined DI athletics.
2) Why would Denver want to be paired with a Kansas school 6 hours away that has shown ZERO interest in DI?
3) Neither Washburn or Missourt Western have shown any interest in DI. Omaha is a good mate for KC
UCO is the only semi-reasonable suggestion. But the Summit has zero need to go past 12 at max and little need to go past 10

St Thomas with athletic scholarships >>> Augustana. The Summit has made the right choice, providing the NCAA cooperates by allowing the direct move from D-III to D-I.
