Augustana moving to Division I?
May not be any fire behind this smoke, but this may be good news for the WAC. The Summit probably won’t take any more Dakota schools.

No no no no no. No one needs or wants a tiny private school in North Dakota. Even the WAC would pass on that

I didn't think the WAC had standards anymore.

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
SdSU and USD and even NDSU should be against this, as Sioux Falls is an important media market for them that they wouldn't want split further. But if Sanford is offering a big endowment, those Dakota's have also drunk from that tank as most of their facility improvements have been paid for by Sanford`s money, and Sanford may be PO'ed if those Dakota's come out against Augustana membershp. Only UND has resisted his gifts, which have naming stipuations. Sanford, who is a billionaire thanks to his getting SD to change their credit card laws, has stated he wants to give his fortune away before he dies. The hospital organization which he stipulated take his name after he helped fund it is now the largest by far in the Dakotas is taking over many of the largest hospitals in the two states. UND is on the opposite side of that near monopoly as Sanford wanted his name on UND's Med School too. Minnesota has gotten donations from him too.

Augustana is a mbb school, and they can draw better than the Sd's, which are in tiny towns. Hockey would be an immediate success as Sioux Falls has record breaking attendance for their U20 USHL squad, but Augie would not go for that as it is unfamiliar ice.

Its in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sioux Falls media thinks they have really hit the big time with the Summit League tournament.

Augustana was in the same DII league as the Dakota's for almost a century. Sioux Falls has hosted DII bb championship tourneys with great crowds.

There is nothing that SDSU, SD, ND or NDSU can do to stop a private school to go D1.

They could vote against their acceptance to the Summit League.

The Sioux Falls media and Augie fans want the Summit League. The WAC would be far from preferable unless they got the WAC tourney too.

Hmmm... Until the source is something more than a message board, I am very skeptical. While the school would be one that the WAC might look at, the geography does not make sense, even for the WAC. Not a few years ago when UN-O was rumored to be coming, then it would have. Sioux Falls, Omaha, Kansas City, Chicago. Not to bad geography for the eastern part of the conference. Now that was a few years ago. I actually like Sioux Falls as a city.

With Sanford, he has the money to do what he wants. This rumor is credible. SF is the kind of place where everybody knows your personal business.

A Sioux Falls sportswriter stated that Augie wanted DI. He didn't have proof of a Sanford endowment though.
Augustana studied DI when USD went.

The Summit has better options than Augustana.

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
I think I posted about this from a news site in the D2 movement thread last year that Augustana mentioned about going to D1. I posted a news article about them from last year in the changing conference that they got inquiries about joining the D1 ranks. Not sure who have been talking to them.

Summit League Expansion Talks

Augustana have been listed on this news site. This could be where the people posted about rumors, plus also an article last year that Augustana interested into going D1.

Seems like a bad idea to move to DI. If this "pay the players" movement actually happens I've heard some say that it could wipe out like 150 schools no problem.

Yeah, you would never take Sanford's money. Ralph Engelstad on the other hand...for him you'll bend over. You only use two arenas named after him and his wife.

I thought the same when I read his post. The Sanford money given to USD, SDSU and NDSU has no strings attached but a name. There is nothing Sanford can say if the three schools say no to tiny Augustana joining the Summit. What is he going to do? Take his name off the building? Big deal, our IPF can be renamed Daktronics from Sanford. He has given SDSU no money for our new FB stadium and none for our renovation of Frost Arena.

The endowment rumor is just that right now, a rumor. Posted on a message board by a USD fan and carried over to the SDSU board. In fact, there have been two separate numbers tossed around, which makes one wonder if the rumor holds any truth. The endowment would not be enough to allow Augustana to increase spending enough to move up. Look up how endowments work. Principal stays intact, growth can be used for general operations, which would include athletics, not solely be for athletics. The Sioux Falls media have been pimping this for a couple of years. They pine for the old NCC, they fought against SDSU and NDSU moving up, later they fought USD moving up. Sioux Falls leaders see the success of the schools that have moved up and want to share in that success. Their answer, Augustana.

Augustana was in the old NCC with the four bigger schools. They were an afterthought most years, had no football success and basketball success was sporadic. Even in their best years, they were behind SDSU, USD and UND, the top three BB schools in the old NCC. They didn't experience success till the larger schools moved on, even today I would say they sit behind Northern State in Aberdeen in the pecking order. They have less then 2,000 students and no access to state funds, moving to D1 would be a huge mistake. A fact brought out by a study they did several years back which showed that moving up would bankrupt the school. Anything is possible, don't expect the bigger schools to open up their arms to the idea.

Augie just hired an assistant AD at Michigan St, Josh Morton, as their new AD. He is a former QB at UND, a former associate AD at UND that experienced a DI transition where he raised substantial $'s and is a former TV sportscaster. His father is a former head fb coach at NDSU and Wisconsin, so he's been in the college sports world since childhood. His father now is on the board of the NDBoHE, which could force its two schools to cast a favorable vote to allow Augie in the Summit.

His father played at Augustana, Illinois, and was an assistant coach at Augustana, SD, where Josh was born.

Don Morton hates NDSU's pres and inexplicably seems to hate NDSU. If he puts pressure on NDSU to do anything at all, I hope our pres tells him to F-off. It isn't like he can withhold his support from NDSU as leverage. He's already played that card.

The last two NDSU presidents thought they ran the board, so it's not surprising that there is tension. Would be surprised if the board gave a directive how to vote.

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
Quote:And it’s no secret that the most attractive candidate at this point might be right in the city where the conference’s signature event is taking place.

Yes, we’re talking about the Augie Vikings again.

Last summer talk of the Vikings joining the Summit League gained some steam after IUPUI left, but athletic director Slade Larscheid mostly threw cold water on the idea, saying the school simply doesn’t have the money to support a move, no matter how much they’d like to go.

This is from my link that I posted. Summit League seems to be interested in Augustana because it is located in the city where the Summit League's office is located.

Quote:The commissioner said he’s had no discussions with the Vikings. But conference leadership is aware of the potential candidates in the NSIC.

“Put it this way – have we talked about them? Yes,” Herbster said. “Those schools would have to have a serious conversation about what is important to them, because it’s a big institutional decision to make. The Summit League can’t be the reason you go Division I. It’s got to be right for the school.”

It seems they are interested in all the schools in the NSIC.

Augustana University 1937 students
Bemidji State University 5365
Concordia University–St. Paul 2800
University of Mary 2758
Minnesota State University, Mankato 15649 Likely candidate to move up.
Minnesota State University Moorhead 7479
University of Minnesota Crookston 2775
University of Minnesota Duluth 11729 another candidate.
Minot State University 3842 wanted to go D1 in men's hockey.
Northern State University 3622
St. Cloud State University 17321 another candidate.
University of Sioux Falls 1576
Southwest Minnesota State University 3700
Upper Iowa University 6271
Wayne State College 3571
Winona State University 8631 another likely candidate.

I should look at the MIAA for expansion instead of Augustana.
Central Oklahoma
Fort Hays State
Central Missouri
Lindenwood
Washburn

The choices are better for Summit than Augustana, but it seems that a couple of the Dakota schools are in favor of Augustana.

Which Dakota schools are interested in Augustana? And the article you keep referring to is all speculation by a writer for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader who has been a cheerleader for Augustana to move up for a long time. The only school on your list who could possibly move and be successful is Mankato State. Though to do so they would need to drop football just like Omaha did. There has been talk, and SDSU, NDSU administrations have admitted it, of seeking out Mankato State for membership in the league.

As for Augustana. On the radio today a commentator in Sioux Falls was talking about the issue. According to him, there are a couple big boosters pushing Augustana to move up. The school has had no serious discussion about it since it was studied 10 years ago. The commentator also mentioned that these boosters jumped Summit League commissioner Tom Douple at this years SLT pushing him to go after Augustana. Douple did not sound all to pleased about the approach and stated to the commentator. Not everyone gets in our league, you have to fit, institutionally and athletically. He also stated that he has never, nor are their any current plans to talk to the Augustana administration.

Sounds like it is all talk right now and that the school is being pushed by a couple rich guys to do something that may not be in the schools best interest.
