Memphis Takes Down Confederate Statues
As I reported in October, the city has been working to remove statues of Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Nathan Bedford Forrest and former Confederate President Jefferson Davis from two of its public parks for more than two years but has been overruled by the state repeatedly because of a law called the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act. That 2013 law gives the Tennessee Historical Commission the power to essentially veto requests to remove historic landmarks, such as state memorials to the Confederacy.

Linkypoo

The healing continues.

Why would Memphis have a statue of a KKK Grand Wizard?

He was a prominent Memphis citizen. And when the KKK got out of hand and violent, he helped put a lid on it, even offering to help exterminate Klan members who were killing innocents.

So thats why the democrats wanted his statue gone. They considered him a traitor.

Plus, he was a Memphian. Raised, not born.

Future generations will regret all of these losses of historical sites and objects. Perhaps around the Civil War Bicentennial when they have nothing to market for visitors.

I believe Memphis has a big problem with the way this was done. The CC voted on it yesterday afternoon and by night fall was removing the Monuments in the middle of the night. Oh! and the land deal was done under the table. 05-nono

There used to be a historical marker at the corner of 3rd and Adams across from the courthouse, which indicated that Forrest's house and business once was located there. The marker indicated that he was a "prominent business man" in Memphis before the Civil War. A little research determined that was the location of his slave trading business.

I have a Confederate flag in my garage and a prints of Lee & NBF in my home. I’d love for the goofy mayor or any of those activists to come attempt to remove them.

This whole deal is a sham. Do you know how much that real estate is worth? Maybe a millions dollars. Heck, the city could have at least got some money for it. What's to stop the "group" from giving the parks to another group, who then could sell it for it for its proper value. Plus there obviously was collusion going on.

I didn't have a problem with the statues coming down in some orderly fashion, should have a long time ago. I never understood Jefferson Davis Park. Forrest statue is fantastic art, but should be at Shiloh or Elmwood. But this process was too sneaky.

One parcel of land is on the Shelby County Appraiser's books valued at $2,300,000. It was sold for $1,000 to a newly formed non-profit.

No public notice of intent to sell was posted.

Public tax-payer land sold at less than 1% of its value does not sound like a fiscally responsible transaction.

Have you seen the elected Democrat morons who run the city?? Most of them probably use those Fast Cash pay day loan places on a personal level. No wonder the city is broke.

Think about what they spent on that charade the other night. Several hundred cops on O/T (they didn't pull all of them off patrolling the violent neighborhoods to block traffic). Each crane cost them no less than $1000 rent. School system in the toilet (so bad that they had to create 6 new school systems to get away from it), crime, poverty, blight insanely high and they spent upwards of $25,000 on taking down some statues to satisfy some people who's lives are still as shtty whether NBF is there or not.
