Part of the normal process. The TE position is certainly a problem, although they may just tweak the offense this year to work around it.
Also, don't know if it's always been this way at EMU, but redshirt guys going into their 5th year, who don't actually contribute on the field, don't get the fifth year paid for, which may have been the case with Abbott and Fuller? Usually they just graduate and enter the real world. Pretty standard most everywhere.
Don't know the actual numbers, but should have multiple schollies available still for immediate Juco help on OL and TE.

Yes, EagleTough you are into something on fifth year redshirts.
It is entirely up to the school to offer scholarship money if they have their degrees.
I think the bottom line is that once a player has his degree the university doesn't feel compelled to offer him scholarship for his fifth year unless the player brings a lot to the table.
And because of this lack of financial commitment, the NCAA allows those same players the opportunity to transfer without penalty.
One needs to remember that universities are graded on the APR system. The goal of that system is to get student-athletes graduated within 4 or 5 years.
If a student-athlete graduates in 4 years the goal has been met. If the student-athlete has additional athletic eligiblity remaining both the school and athlete are then free to continue their relationship or not.

TE: What do you know about Bryce Kemp? He was an outstanding athlete in HS in three sports.

The physical nature of football at this level is often a shock to a lot of these guys. I think Kemp is pretty good as a slot type TE, but way in over his head as a blocker. Kind of a poor man's Kilby.

Eagle Tough, I posted a couple of still unsigned TEs in the 2017 recruiting thread, let me know your opinion. Thanks.

Very cool to see. I'll make a prediction that Maxx Crosby finds his way into All-MAC discussions this year as well. Same with Anthony Brown.

Let's start by getting Vann through an entire season injury free.

And having an offensive line that can consistently block for him

What's funny is that, of all our guys on Athlon's list, I think Vann is a bit too high. If he were a feature back and got through the season injury-free, he'd certainly be up there, but I think we will be using a lot of backs this year. It'll be hard to keep Turner off the field, and Eriksen/Parker/Banham all had their moments last season.
We have a crowded backfield, but that's a pretty good problem to have. Vann is probably one of the most talented backs in the conference, but those All-MAC teams are entirely driven by stats, and he may not get enough carries to beat out other players.

Said it before, but with the depth and talent we have at RB, and the absolute lack of depth and talent at TE, it would be great to see the new OC figure out how to get 2 of these guys on the field at the same time. Either split backs, or one in a slot/Hback type position.
Too much talent there not to utilize it.

Street and Smith 2017 College FB mag has EMU #4 in the West.
I basically agree. We have talent BUT we have holes to fill. Our 2017 season could go up or down. We could win 7 games or win 4.

Street and Smith hasn't published sports preview magazines in several years.
Did you perhaps mean Athlon, or The Sporting News?

Not Athlon I think the Sporting News. Thanks for catching it.

Yes, they stopped publishing their sports "yearbooks" after 2007, merged with TSN.
Went to local Barnes & Noble last Friday, only one they had then was Athlon's.

I've always felt that athlon's is the bottom of the barrel for preseason magazines. Phil Steele's is much better.

RE: Unofficial 2017 Spring Ball Thread
Not much difference between Athlon's and The Sporting News except Athlon gives each team a full page, TSN gives some two, some one, some (most MACs) a half or only a third.
I know a lot of people like Phil Steele's but I don't want to pay for all the gambling-betting info.
