One thing we frequently forget or neglect is the value of the TE as a blocker. A TE can 'chip' a DE before going into his pass patterns. Good way to help an OT who doesn't match-up well vs. a DE, essentially a light double team or against an all-conference DE.

In the NFL I assume that the TE helps the RT who is usually the lesser of the two OTs. Because DEs can flip from side to side, the RT might need help versus a dominant DE who is suddenly lined up opposite him.

Maybe 79 or Ken can ask the staff to clarify our TE situation.

Missed Roback. But Stiebling looked good. Ran a nice counter. DBs had some nice pop. Punting was iffy. Jesse Kelly had some nice rugby-style kicks.

RE: Unofficial 2017 Spring Ball Thread
Dear Friends,
I attended the game today, and was pleased by what I saw with the offense and the defense. The following offensive linemen played about the same amount of time: Pete Bergman, Dakota Tallman, Chris Bukoski, Steve Nielsen, Rob Pavletich, Sam Dervil, Jake Donnellon (although Jake got hurt and had ice on his right knee and ankle), Mike Van Hoeven, Dan Samuelson, Jeremy Hickey, Jimmy Leatiota, and Ka'John Armstrong. So, with that, I don't think any particular lineman has his name carved in stone as a starter. Running backs: Blake Banham and Breck Turner saw the most action, and Turner had a couple of nice gains as a runner and receiver. Ian Eriksen looked as tough as ever, but saw very limited playing time. Shaq Vann was dressed, but never got in the game.
It appears that Eastern is down to three quarterbacks. Brogan Roback, Isaac Stiebeling, and Anton Skupin.
People not on the game roster, and not on the field, were Todd Porter, quarterback, and Nigel Kilby tight end.
Receivers dropped some passes, and the quarterbacks overthrew some receivers, so in my opinion, the passing game needs some work.
Defensively: They had the edge today, and I think that should be expected. They hit hard, pursued well, and knocked down some passes. The defense looked quick, and fast.
Lastly, I would agree with what masttg said as well in his remarks. Also, I thought there were about 500 fans there. That was good to see.

Very nice article with a lot of detail.

As E'Tough has indicated, if the OL can learn to handle our DL they'll be okay in the MAC.

Hard to believe after all of the years of futility (before last season) but we have a strong DL (not normally the case under English or Genyk).

CC had strong words of praise for Harris and Crosby.

CC in the you tube video hints there will be a couple of "older" players coming in this summer. We know we have one OL commit, we're looking at least at one JUCO TE or maybe we're looking at grad transfers.

We need some.

Need help at OT (we've been saying that for months), TE (and one who can block for to protect the QB and for the run game), and maybe another WR.

I'm not sure we've had good luck with FB grad transfers.

I'd concentrate on spring JUCO grads.

Would love to see another legit OT, and a dual-threat TE come in to compete for reps right away. I think we're good at WR. Let the young guys we already have, compete for reps to get ready for the future, instead of bringing in another Juco. Don't even need a FB in today's game. Put a second bigger RB, TE, or athletic OT back there in those very limited instances that call for a 'blocking' back.

If Kirby departs definitely need a juco te and if porter leaves we will be very inexperienced at backup quarterback

Kilby gone this year, don't know how much more proof anybody needs. Porter gone for good, which isn't a bad thing, as long as Brogan stays healthy. More practice reps for Stiebeling and Grissom.

Agree that the young QBs need more work. One of the gets the job in 2018.

What happened to Kilby? Can we get some details?

Dear Friends.
Have heard via the grapevine that Pensyl is now a left hand pitcher for Eastern's baseball team, and that Kilby is gone or the up coming season. The rumor is violation of team rules.

I'm disappointed that a player broke the rules but admire CC for not yielding to anyone even exceptional impact players like Kilby.

With nothing but speculation/rumor, and zero real information from the program..........there is no reason for disappointment, joy, sadness, admiration, etc for anyone or anything related to Kilby having disappeared from the roster.

If we had any coverage of the program the details would be out. Since we don't, best to move on.

Congrats to those 4. Beck really improved moving to the Hybrid LB position. Should be able to keep Vann healthy with fewer carries because of a loaded RB group.

RE: Unofficial 2017 Spring Ball Thread
Looks like we lost some more players after this past semester ended, Sam Girodat another TE leaving us with only 3 TEs on the roster and one coming in the fall, Aaron Abbott who lettered at DB about every year he played here and Fuller at WR. I have no leads at this time on who we might be recruiting to fill these spots. Recall we have Porters and Kilby's spots as well. We definitely need TE help.
