Boys learn how to treat women by watching how their father treats their mother.

Girls learn what to expect from men by watching how their father treats their mother.

As the father of girls, this is something I take very seriously.

My father-in-law is a great guy, but for those who think I'm a rightwing nutjob, I'm a granola-smokin' hippie compared to him.

I'm definitely a grandpa smokin' hippie compared to my father in law. He was bald, and my hair is down to my waist...

It actually happens pretty often, especially if you're a good father. But it even happens pretty regularly if you're not/absentee.

More often than not fathers teach boys how to be men and they teach girls what to look for in a man. Just like mothers teach girls how to be women and boys what to look for in a wife.

But men being a bit more short term driven in relationships tend to less stick to the mom mold than girls do the dad mold.

IS Hillary's explanation really any different than Portman's?

Now the political calculus favors coming out for it. It would only hurt you in a Republican Primary and who knows for how long there.

Remember how significant Obama's vote against the Iraq war was to the 2008 primaries?

This could very well turn into that. Risky at the time, popular in the future.

If the GOP bangs a drum on this issue in the next election cycle....they will lose again. It is just not an issue worth fighting over. They should however just push for legal unions with logical caveats and steal this issue from the Democrats.

The GOP could say, "fine, whatever!" and move on to more important issues.

Or they could continue to let the Dems hit them with this every few days.
