Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin
I believe that Mitt Romney has run an effective and admirable campaign. He's been critical of President Obama but that's to be expected - the only time he perhaps crossed the line was his timing on the Benghazi assassinations.

Obviously he's made up a ton in the polls and is pretty much dead even with Obama at this point. All the signs are pointing towards a victory for the Romney/Ryan ticket.

But I think the last two weeks will steer back to Obama/Biden, and if that's the case, I think you can blame politicians like Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin (who the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported yesterday was arrested several times at anti-abortion protests in the 1980s).

Romney needs some combination of Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc. And the continued publicity from the likes of Mourdock and Akin will swing the critical women's votes in those states to Obama/Biden. Very few women want to hear about inevitable rapes and rapes that are gifts from God.

You can blame the media all you want, and harp all you want about the economy. But no one forced these two guys in swing states to make such a fool of themselves. And if Romney ends up losing, I'd start right there when he tries to figure out what went wrong.

RE: Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin
I wouldn't say the Benghazi comments crossed the line at all--particularly considering that his shot from the hip appears to be proving more accurate than Obama's statements up two weeks later.

But I would agree with the rest, although I think you may overstate the impact. In 2010 republicans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with stupid comments by candidates in several key races. This may be more of the same. Although in fairness, I don't think the media give equal play to equally stupid comments by democrats. But republicans know this, it's not going to change, so don't say stupid stuff.

At the end of the day, I disagree with those statements by Mourdock and Akin. But in dire situations, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Akin is tied in the polls right now.

It will take an event of some kind to swing things back towards Obama. Right now the momentum is with Romney and there's nothing other than an October surprise that will change it. The question is the momentum enough to put him over.

Romney pulled ahead last night on Intrade in Ohio. Right now you would have to say Romney is going to win this thing. Simply amazing. We are absolutely being carpet bombed here in Ohio with negative ads on Obama and Sherrod Brown. What's going to be really reall strange is if our liberal Senator wins pretty handedly and Obama loses. What person would pull a lever for Brown and Romney and the polls are looking like those people are going to determine the election here. So strange.

I don't see why that's strange. While I recognize Brown to be ignorant, he does talk about Ohio and Ohioans needs. Obama has demonstrated ineptitude in foreign relations, in economics, and in imposing laws against the will of the vast majority. He also comes off as aloof and disinterested.

That 1st debate absolutely positively killed him. When he said he actually likes it that they call it "Obamacare". HE NEVER SHOULD HAVE SAID THAT! He came off as arrogant. I had a student yesterday say this... "That guy comes off so full of himself, who would name a law after themselves?". I chuckled inside admiring the genius of some in the GOP. They always win the soundbyte wars. You know a certain set of the population actually thinks Obama named the law after himself.

If you notice a lot of the ads being played in Ohio are sponsored by the National Federation of Independent Business and the Chamber of Commerce. Both are sponsoring a ton of ads against Brown. Hopefully it works as Brown has an abysmal voting record and routinely ranks as one of the most liberal members of the senate.

RE: Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin
I wouldn't put too much stock in Intrade. It can be very easily manipulated, and Roms' camp might be doing just that--

Here’s the backstory: On Monday night, after the debate, Barack Obama was leading Romney on Intrade by around 60 percent to 40 percent. But at around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Romney had surged to nearly 49 percent. Was this evidence that the conventional wisdom was wrong? Had Romney actually won the debate handily? Or, alternatively, was the nosedive in the stock markets putting a dent in Obama’s re-election chances?

Or maybe it was something else. As economist Justin Wolfers pointed out on Twitter, the huge swing toward Romney appears to have been driven by a brief burst of trading, with someone spending about $17,800 to push Romney’s chances on Intrade up to 48 percent. But the surge only lasted about six minutes before other traders whittled the price back down to what they saw as a more accurate valuation. Romney’s odds of winning are, as of Tuesday morning, back at around 41 percent:

As Wolfers pointed out, this mysterious trader ended up overpaying by about $1,250 for shares that subsequently collapsed in value. Was this just someone who made an expensive trade? Or was somebody trying to influence Intrade odds in order to sway perceptions of the race? And, if so, was it worth $1,250 to jolt the markets for less than 10 minutes?

The whole idea of manipulation may seem like a bizarre conspiracy theory, but this isn’t the first time weird swings on Intrade have occurred. In October of 2008, Intrade revealed that a single investor had been engaging in massive purchases of John McCain shares, seemingly in order to bolster the candidate’s standing in the prediction markets:

Of course, that leads to a broader question. Are betting markets really so important that they’re actually worth manipulating? Sure, Intrade did remarkably well in predicting the final electoral vote count of the 2008 election. But as Alex Klein argued last year in The New Republic, prediction markets are far from omniscient. Investors are largely compiling information that’s already out there, such as polling data. The site does less well for more inscrutable events. (Intrade, for instance, suggested there was an 80 percent chance that the Supreme Court would overturn Obama’s health care reform.)

So Intrade isn’t perfect. Still, the betting market on the presidential race has been highly active this year. And the fact that prediction markets are seen as worth swaying suggests that more and more people now see them as highly influential.

I don't see what's so admirable about changing your positions like (magic) underwear.

You can forget about Michigan, and Nevada too (NBC is removing it from the tossup column). Polls show Obama has a healthy 3-4 point lead in Wisconsin and the minorities in Milwaukee who sat out the gubernatorial recall won't sit out for Obama. Given these, Obama only needs Ohio to reach 270 and the early voting ground operation is by all accounts as strong as it ever has been, even outpacing 2008 in Democratic Cleveland. I haven't seen one ******* single poll showing Romney ahead in Ohio, and he absolutely needs to win the turnout on election day because he's starting out in a big hole. Romney needs a 2 point shift in Ohio over these two weeks at least, and the only event he can count on that might move the needle is the jobs report November 2, but generally people have their ideas about the economy baked in by that time. We got this, barring a shockingly bad jobs report or something disastrous of that nature.

It's down statewide by 7% from 2008. You're deluding yourself.

Romney is up an average of 8.8% with Indy's based on most polls.

The Ohio Intrade futures have been volatile here lately.

Maxi stumbled bass ackwards into the truth when he said you shouldn't put much stock in Intrade after repeatedly putting stock in it throughout the year until it turned against what he wanted. As the election gets closer they will swing wildly and then ultimately settle close to the outcome. That's why the idea that Intrade is the gold standard really is misleading because as a predictor it really isn't. As a reflection of the final result it usually is.

Intrade is a fair predictor so long as people with an agenda aren't trying to game it to make their candidate look better, like the McCain supporter in 2008 and the Romney supporter who dumped 20 grand yesterday. Maybe Obama supporters were doing this (very slowly and in small amounts) prior to the Romney involvement, but I doubt it.
