It's joke but I wouldn't expect you to get it. They try to claim the Winston-Salem & Greensboro market too.

How many people in Charlotte would actually watch an App game? Especially a home game, anyone who cared would be up at the game.

That sounds like an argument AGAINST tv markets.

And here is the App section in the Winston Salem journal, another market we obviously dont get coverage in.

http://www2.journalnow.com/sports/college/teams/asu/

Be sure to notice the list of 40 or so stories written in the last 2 months, in the offseason no less.

That's great, you get 2-3 a month in the Charlotte Observer. There is one on Brian Quick today. Really hope he doesn't turn out to be the next Armanti.

That was written by the State in Columbia since he is from there, recycled by the Observer during a slow sports time. I think our Women's Softball team had a nice article the other day.

I just went to the Observer's Hoops page, and counted 9 headlines for UNC, Duke, NC State and even Wake Forest. Out of the 100 or so links on the page, I see 1 Uncc link, and its to the Gold Mine blog.

Not especially promising for uncc either.

Same thing on the football page. Except App actually has an article, and Georgia Southern actually has an AP story link in the crawl on moving up.

Like I said in my previous posts, I've never been sold on markets. They are just icing on the cake.

Remember guys, everyone who has moved up had to start somewhere. Some conference gave them a chance. Charlotte fans don't want to see them because they know deep down as an upstart program it's going to take time to catch up to App on the field and in the stands.
App has great facilities, beautiful stadium with expansion capabilities on the visitors side and one of the endzones. The basketball facility is great though the program is in the toilet.
One last thing, Charlotte should want App wherever they go. Yes there is competition for recruits and fannies in seats, but it's also the potential for a great instate rivalry. It's a short drive for both fan bases to get to their campuses, and I honestly think it could come close to if not FILL BOA Stadium in Charlotte. I know an East Carolina/Charlotte East carolina/App matchup would. Focus on the regional rivalry, build that up. It can only make your programs better.
ECU/USC didn't even fill BoA.

None of those three matchups would either. They would draw well, but they're not going to draw 72,000.

I'm in favor of App/ECU/Charlotte all being in the same conference.

Not even close. I'd be surprised if any of those matchups could draw better than 50k. Not saying that they would draw bad, but ECU in our 2 most recent trips to Charlotte, against VT and USC, only brought a little over 20k. Those are 2 big name teams that were both ranked at the time. We aren't going to bring a higher number than that for either App or Charlotte, and probably a good bit less.

We had a front page article about our walk-on tryouts the other day. You're grasping for straws.

Someone should just move this to the smack forum. This is how it turns out everytime the Apps show up in a thread. Swipe at Charlotte....Charlotte fans get pissed....flame war.

On the front page? Look ASU gets coverage in the Observer, especially during football season, everyone knows it.

Slow sports time? Last time I checked the NFL draft was tomorrow. They could have picked one of 1st rounders from USC, UNC-CH, etc. to put on the cover, and they may tomorrow, but ASU has enough of a presence in Charlotte to warrant coverage. Just a few years ago the Charlotte paper named ASU the #1 football program in the state, do you think they did that because they believed it or that the ASU faithful living in the area would buy it? Answer carefully.

Well, it aint on the page. And having lived in Boone, Charlotte, and the Winston Salem DMA, I pretty much know where to go for App news. And neither school owns a market anyways. App has a presence in three. I dont see uncc coverage in the Winston paper, or in the Greensboro paper. Socon coverage includes App and UNCG and a large number of our students come from all three.
As Bondsj already said it, its potential viewers, and 3 markets > one.

The Observer cared enough to recycle an article that's about it. Not surprising because there is very little journalism that goes on in that building. It will get some clicks from App fans and Columbia natives but I don't foresee a boost in paper sales because Brian Quick is on the front sports page. Anytime a player that is somewhat local goes to the NFL it gets an article.

You should rephrase yourself "ASU football faithful". It's also comical that you think that you are the #1 football team in NC. Last I heard you got blown out by Maine at home.

The title was "Best in the Carolinas?" and it was given to App by the Charlotte Observer, not App fans. And it was given in 2005 before the 3 straight titles, because App was the most consistantly winning team in recent carolina history. Perhaps they'll give Uncc "Best team to never have played a game," so you wont feel left out.

Failing back on a claim from 5-6 years ago won't help you sell papers about an App draft pick. Even though you didn't make the claim, the fact that you mentioned it leads me to believe that somewhere in your convoluted thought process you believe that it still holds true today.

It's ok, 49er fans are guility of this when it comes to our basketball.

ASU football is much more revelant in the state of NC than UNCC basketball is.

Not really that fair of a comparison.

Two of the best basketball programs in history play here. A third has a national championship.

None of the football programs in this state have ever been worth much.

Yes, the profile of football in NC is nothing compared to basketball.

Please explain that........so the unprecedented back to back to back national titles that App State has won are not worth much? The conference championships, a win against a Big Ten team that was ranked AP #5 and had national title mentions...........this is all worthless. All of that is in recent history, b/c we can start talking about overall winning percentages. How about the fact that we can outdraw all of the ACC schools in NC for attendence minus UNC on a good day when the start time lines up with happy hour and NC State.

FCS is not to be confused with FBS. When you win FBS championship come on back on crow. Until then hush about that semi-college title you have. They just don't mean a thing here.
