Bush Campaign Lawyer Tied to Group's Anti-Kerry Ads

Tue Aug 24,10:44 PM ET

By Adam Entous

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - A top lawyer for President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign has been providing legal advice to the group that has accused Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) of lying about his Vietnam War record, informed sources said on Tuesday

<a href='http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&e=3&u=/nm/20040825/pl_nm/campaign_bush_ads_dc' target='_blank'>caught again</a>

Wow. Trooper you've got it all figured out. I'm convinced.

I know it's just academic but could you post the proof you have that Bush is orchestrating with these groups? I know it's a moot point but i'd still like to see it. You know, just to reenforce the convincing argument you've already made.

What's really funny is if the Swifties said, OK, we'll stop, Trooper and Kerry would be screaming "See, I told you they were in league!!!"

As someone who plans on voting for Kerry, I have to question whether he knows he is running the worst presidential campaign since Dukakis '88.

What the hell do they think they are doing with this swift boat crap? This ad ran originally in only 3 states. It has now become THE CAMPAIGN ISSUE for the ENTIRE MONTH OF AUGUST.

It didn't have to be this way. First, was it not entirely predictable that the same group of veterans that has been pissed at Kerry for 33 years would, I don't know...try and derail the most important moment of his life? I think thats a fairly safe bet. There is no reason that they should not have had a strategy for this moment since MARCH.

Yet they have no strategy. It almost seems like they are waking up every morning thinking..."Hmmm...how we can we keep the swift vets story in the media for another day?" I mean, come on! As if it wasn't bad enough in the first week, just when the Olympics comes to wipe the entire news cycle clean for two weeks, they decide to send KERRY HIMSELF out to criticize BUSH HIMSELF! Talk about elevating the story!

What I'm starting to think is that the Kerry campaign is living in an echo chamber. They think this ad helps them. They think it shows what a sleaze Bush is. Most people that are following this don't associate these ads with a Bush attack...so it doesn't hurt him. Meanwhile, it is August and Kerry hasn't articulated much of policy vision at all, because his entire convention was based on his military service. Now that's coming under attack, and its damn hard for the campaign to say that its not germaine because they spent 4 days in Boston saying that it was the #1 thing that qualified him for being President!

It isn't that I disagree with making the convention about his military service, I think it was a good idea actually, and effective. But how do you make the decision to do that without having a strategy for brushing off the inevitable attacks that will follow from the anti-Kerry vets that have been trying to derail him for 33 years?

I don't know how campaign strategists can get to the highest level of their profession, running a presidential campaign, and be making these kinds of obvious mistakes. The Olympics were the PERFECT time to wipe the news cycle clean so the feeding frenzy on this story could stop...and Kerry's campaign decides "Hmm...why let Michael Phelps be the talk of the country...I'd rather people focus on questions about my military service."

When was the last time Democrats ran a good campaign? Clinton '92. Someone needs to get James Carville on Kerry's staff, and in a hurry. You need someone that will tell a candidate what he doesn't want to hear.

The swift boat ad is a low-blow. Call it dispicable, fine. But that doesn't mean that it isn't going to be effective. However, its still pretty Bush-league stuff (no pun intended), and there's no way a top-flight campaign should not have seen this coming and been able to dispose of the issue effectively with a sound strategy. They're letting their hatred for Bush cloud their better judgement.

My favorite parts of this story are bolded:

Quote:CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - A top lawyer for President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign has been providing legal advice to the group that has accused Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) of lying about his Vietnam War record, informed sources&nbsp; said on Tuesday.

The sources, who asked not to be identified, said Ben Ginsberg, the Bush campaign's chief outside counsel, has also been giving legal advice to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that is attacking Kerry.

Well, I have an informed source who asked not to be identified that says that Darth Vader is going to attack the Oompa-Loompas with King Arthur's sword so that he can obtain the ring of power before the flying monkeys use Princess Zelda as a vessel to escape from Ming the Merciless. I'm thinking about making a movie, err, documentary called Celsius 11/4 revealing that this entire story is a coverup for the fact that the Easter Bunny tried to kill Santa Claus with the help of Darth Vader but failed so they covered it up by blaming the Tooth Fairy.

If someone is willing to stand by the accusations about the Bush campaign and information linking Ginsberg then I will give it serious consideration. But until then, it's not worth my time.

There are many reasons for a source to not want to be identified. What if it is a paralegal in this lawyer's office...does she want to risk losing her job?

Just because the source is unidentified doesn't mean its a lie. The journalist has to substantiate the story before it is run...they have editors who are kind of serious about this kind of stuff.

Two Words:

Jason Blair

And again, the assumption is that no paper has a political agenda and would only print a story they know for a fact (sarcasm there). Sure, the source could be a paralegal who doesn't want to lose her job...or something else. If you don't say who your source is, I don't know how credible the story is. I don't take stories as fact just because they are printed (I'm too experienced for that).

No. I don't.

There were at least 20,000 Democrats at that convention.

Of the delegates, most were elected and some were appointed by state and county party chairmen.

It isn't even clear Moore is a delegate. More than likely, he got into the convention with a press pass. And, at some point -- the night of Jimmy Carter's speech, I believe -- Carter invited Moore to join him in his seating area for a little bit.

Here's the photo:

I don't see how it can be argued that any of that was under Kerry's control.

George Elliot

During the Vietnam era, raved about what Kerry did for his country.

In 1996, he said of Kerry: "The fact that he chased down an armed enemy down is not something to be looked down upon, but it was an act of courage. And the whole outfit served with honor."

Claims in the ad: "John Kerry has not been honest about what happened in Vietnam."

Told the Boston Globe a day later he recanted what he said in the ad.

Then issued an affidavit a day later recanting his recantation.

Now refuses to talk to the press.

Roy F. Hoffmann

During the Vietnam era, raved about Kerry's service.

In a June 2003 article recalled the actions that led to Kerry's Silver Star, saying "It took guts, and I admire that."

Now claims in the ad:

"John Kerry has not been honest."

Louis Letson

Now claims in the ad: "I know that John Kerry is lying about his first Purple Heart because I treated him for that injury."

But Letson's name does not appear on any medical record for Kerry. The doctor identified as administering treatment is "J.C. Carreon," who is now dead.

Adrian L Lonsdale

At a 1996 Kerry news conference, spoke of the "bravado and courage of the young officers that ran the Swift boats" and said: "Senator Kerry was no exception. He was among the finest of those Swift Boat drivers."

Now claims in the ad: "And he lacks the capacity to lead."

Van Odell

Now claims in the ad: "John Kerry lied to get his Bronze Star. I know. I was there. I saw what happened."

This contradicts Kerrys' Bronze Star citation as well as the citation of another who received a Bronze Star that day (see below). Also, a damage report for another boat present shows it received three bullet holes.

Larry Thurlow

Now claims: Kerry's boat did not come under fire during a mission in Viet Cong-controlled territory on March 13, 1969. Last month, he swore in an affidavit that Kerry was "not under fire" when he fished Lt. James Rassmann out of the water. He described Kerry's Bronze Star citation, which says that all units involved came under "small arms and automatic weapons fire," as "totally fabricated." He claims he "never heard a shot."

But it turns out Thurlow won his own Bronze Star that day. His own military record cites "enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire" directed at "all units" of the five-boat flotilla. Thurlow's Bronze Star citation him for providing assistance to a damaged Swift boat "despite enemy bullets flying about him."

Thurlow has had 35 years to turn in his Bronze Star. He never did. Yet now he is criticizing Kerry's Bronze Star.

Kerry is blowing it big time. Even if he does have a platform that meets the claims made by SF and others...no one is hearing it.

BTW, Dole ran a pretty bad campaign in '96.

While that is a precious story and I'm sure you'd love to believe it's true, the fact is that was Kerry's convention. And if he didn't want Moore there, he wouldn't have been there. If he didn't want Moore to have a back stage pass and a seat in that box, he wouldn't have had it.

Keep making up stories and keep running cover for Kerry. You've already established you don't care if he's a liar. Why should you care to lie for him?

Quote:Revealed: how 'war hero' Kerry tried to put off Vietnam military duty
By Charles Laurence in New York
(Filed: 07/03/2004)

Senator John Kerry, the presumed Democratic presidential candidate who is trading on his Vietnam war record to campaign against President George W Bush, tried to defer his military service for a year, according to a newly rediscovered article in a Harvard University newspaper.

&nbsp;
Senator Kerry on the campaign trail in Iowa
He wrote to his local recruitment board seeking permission to spend a further 12 months studying in Paris, after completing his degree course at Yale University in the mid-1960s.

The revelation appears to undercut Sen Kerry's carefully-cultivated image as a man who willingly served his country in a dangerous war - in supposed contrast to President Bush, who served in the Texas National Guard and thus avoided being sent to Vietnam.

The Harvard Crimson newspaper followed a youthful Mr Kerry in Boston as he campaigned for Congress for the first time in 1970. In the course of a lengthy article, "John Kerry: A Navy Dove Runs for Congress", published on February 18, the paper reported: "When he approached his draft board for permission to study for a year in Paris, the draft board refused and Kerry decided to enlist in the Navy."

Quote:According to the Democratic Party's version of Sen Kerry's military history, he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Harvard through eagerness to do his duty, and sailed with the Navy for combat as soon as he graduated in 1966.

You were saying?

Quote:Ginsberg said he never told the Bush campaign what he discussed with the group or vice versa, and doesn't advise the group on ad strategy. He said he had not yet decided whether to charge the Swift Boat Veterans for his work.

Ginsberg contends that by offering legal advice to both the Bush campaign and the Swift Boat group, he has done nothing different from other election lawyers, including attorneys for Kerry and the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) who have also advised soft-money groups. Representing campaigns, parties and outside groups simultaneously is legal and allowed under the Federal Election Commission (news - web sites) coordination rules, he said.

Yeah, that credibility gap between Kerry and Bush is huge.

These are outside council used by the elections. They are not operatives or advisors on ad strategy. The fact that either side has lawyers who advise both the RNC/DNC and 527's in not proof of collusion or a violation of campaign finance laws.

Glass houses and all that eh Huskie?

More on credibility.

Quote:&nbsp; John Kerry's own wartime journal is raising questions about whether he deserved the first of three Purple Hearts, which permitted him to go home after 4½ months of combat.

A journal entry Mr. Kerry wrote Dec. 11, however, raises questions about what really happened nine days earlier.

"A cocky feeling of invincibility accompanied us up the Long Tau shipping channel because we hadn't been shot at yet, and Americans at war who haven't been shot at are allowed to be cocky," wrote Mr. Kerry, according the book "Tour of Duty" by friendly biographer Douglas Brinkley.

If enemy fire was not involved in that or any other incident, according to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, no medal should be awarded.

Let's see Kerry's journal says one thing then, Kerry says something different now.

Yeah, no credibility problem there.

I like this part of the story.....

"On Tuesday, Benjamin Ginsberg, a lawyer for Bush's re-election campaign, disclosed that he has been providing legal advice for a veterans group challenging Kerry's account of his Vietnam War service.

Ginsberg's acknowledgment marked the second time in days that someone associated with the Bush-Cheney campaign has been connected to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group Kerry accuses of being a front for Bush's re-election effort.

The Bush campaign and the veterans group say there is no coordination. "

Somebody's fibbing ........again 05-nono

I think they should just rename their group Swift Boat Veterans for Bush and then everyone would understand when they lied.

If enemy fire was not involved in that or any other incident, according to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, no medal should be awarded.

Let's see Kerry's journal says one thing then, Kerry says something different now.

Yeah, no credibility problem there.
If Graybeard saw this he'd accuse you of trying to change the subject of the thread :D

Yeah Right........

Hmmm...You may want to look where the thread spin about "credibility" actually began. It wasn't with Ninferfan1.

Is this the kind of whiney crap that you are going to post here? I got busted for changing the subject and dodging the issue!

Hey, it's not my fault that JFKerry is a flip flopper.

My favorite parts of this story are bolded:

Quote:CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - A top lawyer for President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign has been providing legal advice to the group that has accused Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) of lying about his Vietnam War record, informed sources  said on Tuesday.

Perhaps this will help out your "credibility" issues with the story....

<a href='http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1963&e=4&u=/ap/20040825/ap_on_el_pr/veterans_group_bush_6&sid=96378798' target='_blank'>Ginsberg "discloses" his service to Swift Boats group</a>
Yep...and I read the whole article too.

I did find this part interesting:

[QUOTE]Joe Sandler, a lawyer for the DNC and MoveOn.org, a group running anti-Bush ads, said there is nothing wrong with serving in both roles at once. Attorneys are ethically bound to maintain attorney-client confidentiality, and could lose their law licenses if they violate that, he said.[QUOTE]

So I guess it's a non-issue that Ginsberg works for both. Story verified...no laws broken.

I guess being a flip flopper is not all that bad when you're compared to someone who is consistently making wrong choices and doesn't have the guts to admit them. 03-razz

Anyway the Bush lawyer who was running the Swift Boat Veterans group has now resigned. (wink, wink)
