I don't think Syracuse can afford to get another hire wrong after Boeheim. Not sure what McNamara will bring that Autry did not. Within the ACC, you'd have to rank at least five, maybe six, programs, ahead of it (UNC, Duke, Louisville, Virginia, NC State) and that doesn't even account from an NIL spending standpoint.

With the emphasis on “at least”. Syracuse entered the ACC with a bang, but they have had only 4 seasons with a winning record in conference play in the last 12 years. They haven’t made the tournament in any of the past 5 years under either Autry or Boeheim. They’re obviously not the program they once were.
What will McNamara bring that Autry did not? Himself. That’s all that any coach brings. The hiring committee will have to take the measure of the man and see if they think he has the right stuff, as they will of each candidate. Siena’s players seem to like GMac and to believe in him. Here’s what Siena star Gavin Doty had to say about his coach after Siena’s win over Fairfield in the MAAC championship game:
“He was going to get on me and help me to be the best player I could be. . . I’ve said it before, GMac won a national championship as a player, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins one as a coach some day.” He praised the team’s grit under McNamara, “We were willing to do whatever it took tonight.”

USF is probably a top 4 job in The American right now, at worst. NIL has really changed things and they're investing heavily in both the football and basketball programs. The only school I would say is in a better position in terms of resources is Memphis, and they had a historically bad season under Penny this year which cleared the way for another team to win the league (I know Memphis typically hasn't won the league, but point being they're almost always the favorite.) .
Hodgson can clearly coach but I don't think this this season is nearly as impressive as what Abdur Rahim (RIP) did just two seasons ago. Had he not passed away they may have won the league 3 years in a row.
My overall point being I wouldn't mind the Hodgson hire but I wouldn't look at it like "they nailed it" either. Could look like another English in 4 years.

Every year Memphis keeps Penny is another guaranteed year of under-performance IMO. They emotionally cannot bring themselves to fire a beloved alum and instead continue to attempt to change everything around the program (spending, assistant coaches, support staff) to change the outcomes. Doesn't help that Memphis has been left behind in the American either, and with USF heavily investing in pursuit of also eventually getting called up, that doesn't help things either.
I totally agree on Abdur Rahim. Was doing something very special at USF.

On the Penny theme, he'll get one more year. And if it is not a strong season, and yet the university still can't stomach firing him ... we may as well disband the Tiger program.
I was hoping Hardaway would voluntarily step down this year. What a fool I was to have entertained such hope. Interestingly, I somewhat hoped that, had Penny moved on, Memphis would take a very strong look at Duke assistant (and former NBA assistant) Evan Bradds. He is set to be the next Belmont coach (I'm thrilled about that) and I think has a very bright coaching future. Memphis could have benefited from Bradds (or somebody like him).
Unrelatedly, Hodgson seemingly would be a quality hire by Providence.

GMac has his Siena team up by 9 over Duke with 4 min to play in the first half! Maybe he can coach.

And I totally agree on Penny. Reminds me of the end of the Tubby Smith tenure right now. Most fans I see posting here want him gone and I think they need a fresh face to revitalize the program. One thing Penny was always good for was recruiting, but even that has fallen off a cliff. Their roster was pretty barren this year, which should not be the case in the NIL era when they're getting FedEx money. They're one of the biggest brands outside of the power conferences and even bigger than some of the power conference teams. They can bring in a good coach if they want to.

See my response to GW11. I really hope Memphis cans Penny after next season (if not sooner, but seems that ship has sailed this offseason) and brings in a quality HC

I was surprised they went for Hodgson before trying for McNamara.

Yeah, me too. I would have said "maybe they're waiting for GMac to finish the tournament" but Hodgson was in the field as well and had a higher likelihood of making a run. Only thing I can think of is they wanted a guy who was proven at a higher level. But I would rather have GMac even if he wasn't a 4 year player for the school I rooted for. He's going to be a very good coach.

What I’m hearing is that Cuse wants UConn assistant Luke Murray now that Hodgson has dropped them.

Various websites. They could all be repeating the same source. The NY Times had an article saying that Syracuse is interested in him. Matt Norlander also mentioned him.

You would think after Sienna's performance against Duke he would've been given more consideration.
As far as Murray goes, all I've seen is that he's one of many candidates. Not sure I would go as far as saying they want him. However it could happen if they keep getting rejected. I didn't even realize Hodgson was from western New York and still didn't want to go there. Although as someone who left southern Florida for upstate New York last August, I can't say I blame him...

Jeff Goodman, long time national basketball reporter, said last night on his podcast that Bryan Hodgson to Providence is a day or so away from happening. I’ll give him until Monday for an announcement, now that USF is out of the tournament

Funny Hodgson turned down Cuse but will likely accept the job with Providence. During the days of the old Big East I don't think I could have fathomed that happening.

They definitely could've done worse, but I'm not sure how excited I am about the hire.
If the rumor is true they will have $12m in NIL next year, I'm sure he will do better than English did this year though
