Sure, Jan.
Market already down 250+ today.
Simple answer here Karen. Just don’t buy their chit. No price hike in that.
Besides, I thought you said presidents could not affect the stock market. You think so now?

They never have before.
They aren’t going to now.
Unless the US sends drones into the Mexican border towns and does what Mexico can’t. Clean up the cartels by killing them all. A two hour offensive would cripple their business.
Then warn if they start sending drugs, women and children across the border again, we’ll use the drones again.
This isn’t the Biden Administration. Trump is ready to put foot to as.
Hell, we are already at war with the people who actually run Mexico...only one side is fighting right now. That will change in less than 2 months.

I did read it. You're premise is that inflation would be small and quickly recede. My point is that these are not targeted tariffs.
And that paragraph actually sort of states that you expect a recession, but not a deep one. If so, you think taking the good economy that we have now and creating a recession...even a short or shallow one, is a good thing?
My second paragraph lists the major industries and products that would be impacted with wide spread tariffs. They were not included in Trump’s first term.
The economy is already poor, but because of high interest rates from the previous administration + idiot Fed Chair.
It will take a year or two to fix what is fundamentally wrong with the economy.
FFS, our economy is not currently poor!
And trumps post says ALL products.
The voters disagreed.
I’m aware that this includes all products, but I only included the sectors where the inflation rate measures. Food prices, energy prices, auto, etc. Not all industries/products are created equal and those products are optional buys for most people.
Nobody WANTS the tariffs. They have been used as a negotiating tactic to foster a trade deal or address other issues that are important as well.
Also, since when did inflation bother you? All of a sudden our government can cause it?
The voters are idiots...they aren't nuanced and they don't pay attention to details. They vote on feels.
And stop with the fallacy. Inflation isn't black and white. No, 9% inflation isn't good. But it also wasn't just us, it was the whole world and we recovered back to the mean better than any major country. And small inflation is good and necessary for a healthy economy. And of course a government can cause inflation. Stimulus will do it and also imposing huge tariffs on everything will cause it.

You won't like the answer.
I'll play, what's the answer ?
The vast vast majority of Fentanyl comes in through guarded border crossings and is brought in my American citizens.
Quote:Here are the facts:
Fentanyl smuggling is ultimately funded by U.S. consumers who pay for illicit opioids: nearly 99 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.
In 2022, U.S. citizens were 89 percent of convicted fentanyl drug traffickers—12 times greater than convictions of illegal immigrants for the same offense.
In 2023, 93 percent of fentanyl seizures occurred at legal crossing points or interior vehicle checkpoints, not on illegal migration routes, so U.S. citizens (who are subject to less scrutiny) when crossing legally are the best smugglers.
The location of smuggling makes sense because hard drugs at ports of entry are at least 96 percent less likely to be stopped than people crossing illegally between them.
At most, just 0.009 percent of the people arrested by Border Patrol for crossing illegally possessed any fentanyl whatsoever.

All that means is you are far more likely to be caught bringing it through checkpoints. We have no frickin' idea how much comes in through illegal crossings, because most of it isn't caught. Now, ask yourself, if you were trying to sneak something into the US, would you come through a legal entry point? I bet not.

The author of this article, David Bier, also believes that Obama “deported” over 800,000 illegals during his tenure. They changed the definition of deportation so any apprehension at the border was considered to be a “deportation.”
Since he doesn’t know these simple facts, this is a poor source to use.
Also, this guy admitted during a congressional hearing that’s he’s never been to the border. Not even close to an expert.

I see you missed the point of Pony94's statement. which is par for the course with you.
"once Mexico and Canada stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S."
Most of the fentanyl is made in China. Mexico is becoming a major transit and production point for the drug. While seemingly dominated by two large criminal groups in Mexico, the fentanyl trade requires vast networks of smaller subcontractors who specialize in importing, producing, and transporting synthetic drugs.
The big picture is, Mexico does nothing to stop the flow of illegal immigrants walking or riding all across their country to get into the USA. The same thing can be said about the fentanyl problem, they are doing nothing. I believe Canada can be put in the same boat.

So if there's a 25% tax imposed on importers bringing goods into the country from Canada and Mexico, who's going to pay it? You don't think they're going to pass that additional cost onto the consumer?
Of course they are. Then consumers will find cheaper alternatives. That's how tariffs work.

RE: Trump to impose 25% tariff on all Mexico & Canada imports on Jan 20 until…
How do we know Trump's announcement of tariffs on MX and CA effective 1/21/25 are effective? Both MX and CA reacted IMMEDIATELY.
C'est la vie. Both MX and CA know that the USA is the BIG DOG in our tri-relationship. Trump wants to make sure both of our immediate neighbors are aware of this reality.
To be clear, it does NOT mean CA and MX have to like it. It simply means they have to TOLERATE it. Trump is serving advance notice of how things in his Administration will be DIFFERENT from the anemic Joe and Cackler Administration.
China is already very used to the tariffs, so they are familiar with this tool. I fully expect China will have 25% tariffs assessed on even MORE of their imported goods. China will of course mirror the tariff actions by assessing more US goods to tariffs.
Note - I say the tariffs commence on 1/21/25 since Trump has to sign them into law the afternoon of the 20th and the effective date will probably be Jan. 21 at 12:01am.

Good Point.
No, it's a horrible point, and wrong. But I get it, it doesn't fit your narrative, so it's wrong and fake.
And it doesn't even pass the smell test. You think drug cartels are entrusting illegal immigrants breaking the law to make dangerous border crossings in the middle of nowhere with loads of Fentanyl...and then expect them to get it to the correct people to then resell?
Or would they enlist Americans who can more easily get the drugs through points of entry? Americans who are selling and/or using the drugs...and have a way more vested interest in the profits, etc.?
And if you don't trust the cato figures, the CBP says the same thing. Of course, you don't trust them either. You trust some report by Jesse Watters on Fox.
