UB Engineering had a great program for getting Seniors into paid internship positions. My first Job out of college with USACE came from an internship that paid 13$ an hour and had benefits.

The prize was the General Mills Gig which paid upwards of 18 an hour and was down the street from me. I got called back a second time but was not familiar enough with some of their systems to get the job.

For all their good, if you didn't have unpaid internships companies would still hire people, paying them little to determine which are the best for the work that they need to get done. It's in their best interests.

RE: Should interns be paid?
For much of our history apprenticeships were the mainstay of learning a trade and becoming successful. We were better off in many ways with this system. Now kids just party for four(or five or six) years...waste mom and dads money...graduate from college and then work for free to learn the trade. We would be better off just going straight to the apprenticeships.03-lmfao

RE: Should interns be paid?
Apprenticeships have a lot of merit. When someone takes on an apprentice they normally would seem to be more responsible for training them than an internship. It reflects directly on that individual. May not be that way, but seems that it is to me. They may not be paid all that much, but have a job and a direct line of getting to where they are going. Used to be a lot more of those, even real estate brokers in many states had to serve an apprenticeship for a certain period of time. Things have changed too much.
Getting old I guess.

Just another step forward in Obama's war on college students and the middle class.

Paid internships are nice, but unpaid internships should never be done away with. People should have the choice to choose which one they would like to do depending on their particular circumstances. I did both types, the paid one was great, but the unpaid one helped me more career wise.

I was lucky because Cincinnati has a co-op program... basically all paid internships, and they pay decently as well (in 1999 I was making $12.50 an hour, great for a college student). I also understand the non-paid internships, however.

Sounds like what UB does. The really nice thing was those internships paid time and a half for over 40 hours and during the summer they loved to pile on the interns.

There were weeks where I was making almost 800 before taxes while I was a Junior/Senior. They also gave me my first Job out of College which had a lousy first year pay but I would be up to about 80K if I had stayed (I do regret leaving a bit).

And THIS is what makes this fine. No one is putting a gun to anyone's head in this arrangement. Both parties usually benefit from this without any coercion.

03-confused Isn't it the Republicons that want to increase the interest rate on student loans and ship their future jobs overseas?

You realize it was the government giving out loans like candy that drove up the price of college, right?

Why do want to saddle people with mountains of debt, Robs?

I graduated right when the dotcom bust happened. Most of my classmates didn't get IT jobs straight out, but I had a few opportunities thanks to my experience. I took a job with my last co-op employer for a couple years (granted, at a very low wage). I would never trade that experience, however, as I now can put that I've got almost 15 years experience in the field (I worked and went to school).

If they're paid then aren't they employees and not interns? Just sayin.

I would rather my resume say Intern than minimum wage lackey. Another solution in search of a problem.

Positive Rep me or I'll never let Prince Albert out of the can.

I don't know. Maybe so that they can someday make it into the middle class since most of the jobs that once provided a nice middle class job are now in China and India.

Only if they suck it down like Monica did for Clinton. She dribbled a little on the dress, so half pay.

Don't feel bad. If they were still here you'd still be grossly unqualified for them.

Yeah, and starting out with a crushing pile of debt is conducive to that end. 03-shhhh
