Should interns be paid? - VA49er - 06-17-2013 11:05 AM Judge says yes. Dumb judge. I got my break into my industry with a unpaid internship. Unpaid Internships in Jeopardy After Court Ruling.... Quote:In the ruling, the judge said Fox should have paid the two interns who filed the lawsuit because they did the same work as regular workers, provided value to the company and performed low-level tasks that didn’t require any specialized training. Now, what part of "unpaid" did those two interns not understand before they took the position? RE: Should interns be paid? - GoApps70 - 06-17-2013 11:14 AM So that basically would eliminate all internships almost completely it sounds like. RE: Should interns be paid? - JMUDunk - 06-17-2013 11:16 AM Yep, another dumb*** legislating from the bench. Bye bye real-life experience, real life opportunities and hello to another barrier to entry for low level employees. Hope they all enjoy either sitting at home watching Jerry or offering fries with that order. RE: Should interns be paid? - RobertN - 06-17-2013 11:19 AM Why am I not surprised that you big business tea baggers think it is just fine for corps to have slaves? RE: Should interns be paid? - Fo Shizzle - 06-17-2013 11:20 AM What are the odds this judge is a liberal? I guess the nitwits that sued did not understand what an internship is? RE: Should interns be paid? - mlb - 06-17-2013 11:25 AM When my kids come to work with me for "go to work with dad" day will they have the ability to file charges for unpaid work AND labor laws now? RE: Should interns be paid? - BlazerFan11 - 06-17-2013 11:26 AM Well paid internships are a fundamental right! Big business? While my company has paid internships, I've worked for VERY small businesses that have had interns. It allowed them to get some actual real world experience in the field they were studying and allowed them to decide if that was the path they wanted to continue down. Goodbye to those situations... this will hurt a lot of places. Not just the company, but the college will be hurt too when their students can't get internships. Why is it you Liberals think the Big Businesses forced anyone to take an internship? Don't like it? Work somewhere else, problem solved. I was under the impression most internships were paid already. Umm...The government also invites a ton of unpaid interns to work. Of course that would be fine with you...wouldn't it Toby. RE: Should interns be paid? - GoApps70 - 06-17-2013 11:30 AM Think a lot of internships are being taken advantage of for free labor. May be business prone, but internships should not replace paid jobs. Only things like candy stripers and volunteers at homeless shelters should be not paid. TV/Radio, lawyers, marketing, sports management, etc., all use unpaid interns to allow college students to get an understanding of how the business works. It helps to weed out students whom would not enjoy that line of work if they continued down the path of that degree. It is very useful. That's funny. Have you ever held a job to have such an opinion? I did a fulltime 10 week, 40 per week (that's 400 hours, Rob) unpaid internship for a non-profit. There were 4 or 5 of us at a time and we each had a real job, real offices, real responsibilities and a real constituency we served. We were also quite essential to the place actually operating. It proved to be invaluable experience, established contacts and working relationships outside the Center. That in turn led directly to at least 3 of us getting jobs directly related or through the relationships we made. No way they could have paid us, wasn't the money in the budget to do so. Keep creating obstacles to people actually getting real jobs and you have what we have- unrelenting unemployment above 7 1/2%. Not even counting those that have simply given up. Damn near criminal. Often these places simply do not have the budgets to hire interns and it is the only way to get your foot in the door in some fields. RE: Should interns be paid? - Fo Shizzle - 06-17-2013 11:38 AM What is the difference between a volunteer and an intern? Other than seeking some additional knowledge...nothing. Should interns be paid? - chargeradio - 06-17-2013 11:39 AM Will the impact of this really be that great? Most internships I've seen since I graduated high school (1998) are paying, albeit usually minimum wage-that may be due to the existing law that was applied in this case.
