That's funny. Have you ever held a job to have such an opinion?

I did a fulltime 10 week, 40 per week (that's 400 hours, Rob) unpaid internship for a non-profit. There were 4 or 5 of us at a time and we each had a real job, real offices, real responsibilities and a real constituency we served.

We were also quite essential to the place actually operating. It proved to be invaluable experience, established contacts and working relationships outside the Center. That in turn led directly to at least 3 of us getting jobs directly related or through the relationships we made.

No way they could have paid us, wasn't the money in the budget to do so.

Keep creating obstacles to people actually getting real jobs and you have what we have- unrelenting unemployment above 7 1/2%. Not even counting those that have simply given up. Damn near criminal.
Sucker.

Haha. Hardly. Has served me well and continues to do so every day, even more than 20 years later. Invaluable experience and education.

They are paid via the experience received and the internship is very often an excellent foot in the door upon graduation. That can not be beat, especially in this day of higher unemployment. I did an unpaid internship for an entire summer and was then hired by the same company full time after graduation the next year.

Why? Costco pays well compared to your Wal-Mart job.

Umm...The government also invites a ton of unpaid interns to work. Of course that would be fine with you...wouldn't it Toby.
Um, no. They should be paid too.

So...Adults should not be allowed to volunteer to work for free then?

You say adults....but employers can take advantage of anyone, and do many times. If it's volunteer work, with no hope of getting a job, then would be fine with it. However, free work for experience to obtain a job should be paid. That way it's more clear cut also.

TV/Radio, lawyers, marketing, sports management, etc., all use unpaid interns to allow college students to get an understanding of how the business works. It helps to weed out students whom would not enjoy that line of work if they continued down the path of that degree. It is very useful.

Yes..Add many municipal and government internships also. My daughter just finished one in a museum setting. Often these places simply do not have the budgets to hire interns and it is the only way to get your foot in the door in some fields.

That's hardly "all internships"

I didn't interpret this as a strike against all internships. It was specifically mentioned that these interns were not learning any lasting skills related to their chosen career path. They were doing work like making copies, fetching Starbucks, and taking out the trash. You don't have to intern all summer to learn how to get coffee for your boss.

Well, that's the way interning goes and always has. I did those things along with making tons of cold calls. It sucked but I knew i the long run it would pay off and it did. An internship isn't about getting paid, it's about proving one's worth and gaining experience. The pay comes later.

I think this comes down to our "me first" culture where no one wants to earn their way, they just want everything now. They want the pay, the title, etc without the burden of paying dues or gaining experience.

Lots of folks do. I went from a paid internship to an unpaid internship because I wanted an "in" with the company offering the unpaid internship. Turned out to be a smart move.

RE: Should interns be paid?
In a world where every ENTRY level job listing requires 2 years experience, unpaid internships are usually the way to get that experience. Say that the companies have to pay the interns and they'll no longer hire them. Where does the experience come from then?

Some interns are paid, some are not.... Should be up to the company/interns to come to some agreement.

Well, not really up to the intern. If an intern wants to be paid they shouldn't look for an unpaid opportunity in the first place.

Uhhhh, then why didn't they simply walk away? Instead, they hang around do these menial tasks and later ***** about it and sue?

Go pound sand. Now, if the position was sold on faulty promises, maybe I can see this.

Yea, that's an excellent point. Wonder if Monica could go back now and sue for what? $150 per "we were never alone" moment? Is that about right? What's the going rate these days?

RE: Should interns be paid?
Look, if you don't want an unpaid internship, where you might be doing the same things as an actual employee for no compensation other than experience (which can be extremely valuable) then don't sign up for one.

If you want a paid internship then apply for them but be aware of the difficulty to get those types of internships (other people like to get paid also).

Maybe I'm a fool but that's just my take.

In Internships linked to College or Grad School most of the time you don't get financial compensation if you are getting course credit.
