Mayor of Hoover Says There's Been "Chatter" of UAB Football at the Met
http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2013/04/post...cart_river

"There has even been some preliminary "chatter" about having a UAB football game at The Met, though no formal discussions, Ivey said when asked about it. "We certainly would be open to that," Ivey said."

I don't like that idea at all.

This is a horrible idea as long as the met is configured for baseball. Now if they converted to a permanent football configuration then maybe it would be worth considering instead of Legion.

Translation : I (Hoover Mayor) ran into Brian Mackin at the Galleria back during Christmas time. We said "Hi" and shook hands. I told him we would like UAB to play out at the Met.

He said "Soccer and Baseball already play out there".

I said, "I would like to see a football game out here."

Brian said "yeah sure"

Internet chatter, maybe, but that's probably all.

Would really pull down attendance numbers. Capacity for football probably tops out at about 12K.

Obviously the comments section on AL.com qualifies as "chatter"

If they got rid of the baseball configuration and converted the stadium to a 25-30K multipurpose (read soccer and football) facility then I could see it.

One reason the Barons moved was because Hoover didn't want to spend any real money on the stadium.

Now they have a concrete pink elephant. The only event that will be held there will be the occasional hoover football game (but they might have expanded seating at their on campus stadium, so who knows...)

RE: Mayor of Hoover Says There's Been "Chatter" of UAB Football at the Met
I'm out of the loop, but according to Wiki their only contract tenants are the Hoover High football team and the SEC baseball tournament. They'll probably lose the SEC to Regions Field or another location.

How much would it cost them to convert the Met to a nice 20,000-25,000 seat football stadium? I wouldn't hold our noses to this idea. I think it could work if money was spent to make something semi-permanent and nice for football there. If we can sell-out 25,000 there for 2 years (and I think we can do that more easily there than at Legion Field) we have a slam-dunk for downtown stadium funding. Hoover might would put the money down to convert to football because even after UAB leaves they will still have use for the Hoover Met "football stadium".

Would not be surprised if it happens, no matter how stupid or infeasible it is.

I think Hoover's more likely to renovate the Met than birmingham is going to keep legion from crumbling, so I guess if we don't get our OCS we may end up out there.

Or hell maybe we could just borrow Hoover High's football stadium.

Going to Hoover would most definitely be a short term solution and I don't see Hoover willing to spend millions of dollars to expand the stadium for UAB to use for just a couple of years.

They're going to throw anything they can think of out and see what sticks. I heard Gene Hallman mention trying to get the NCAA softball tournament at the Met the weekend after the SEC tournament.

Just because someone who would gain mentioned an idea it does not follow that it is a good idea, or that we should or would do it.

Pffft. Hell no, not unless Lesion Field falls down.

With no regularly scheduled team to play at "the MET", the city's Mayor is doing what mayors do - look out for finding users for city facilities. Maybe they had thought a Triple A baseball team would welcome a chance to play there, but if none is in sight, UAB FB is the closest substitute. How much would the city of Hoover have to spend to get a "bare-bones" 30,000 seat FB stadium erected around their field? And what kind of deal might tempt UAB to play at such a place?

I am totally against "B'ham's team" playing even one season at the MET, but the decision will be made by UAB administration folks, not us. I still believe that we can and will draw well at Legion Field once we field a winning team. Winning remains the only marketing strategy UAB has never tried.

Woot. Our annual Hoover Met thread.

I've read max max capacity of 13-16K when set up like they did for soccer. 35%+ of those seats would be behind an endzone though. Could they do double decker temp seats along one side? 03-razz It won't be permanently reconfigured for football as long as they are hosting the SEC baseball tourney.
