Why is this a bad idea?

1. It's even further from campus.

3. Baseball sight lines suck for football.
4. Tailgating on concrete.
5. Even further from my house.

Too small? How many crowds have we had that it would be too small for? 1 game per season? In 2012, every game outside of Troy would have fit. Looking at this year's schedule, what game scares you? Is it the powerhouse of Northeastern State? Or the Southern Miss game that's during the Iron Bowl?

Call me crazy... but what if it's still too big? What if UAB vs. Northeastern State, home opener is at the Hoover Met, "Announced" attendance of 10,500, actual attendance of 7,000, and the place is half empty? Egg meets face. That might be the real reason. We're scared of failure. Legion Field, as "bad" as it is, serves as a great ole crutch sometimes.

Okay, how's this?

I don't want to drive to Hoover. Legion Field, warts and all, is closer, and is actually a football venue. The majority of the crowd doesn't have to sit in the end zone. I can tailgate under oak trees, and not in a sea of asphalt.

One more thing: think getting students to games is hard now?

TV begs to differ.

"Five Most-Viewed World Cup Qualifying or International Friendly Matches on ESPN:
Date Match Network Rating P2+ (Viewers)
Tue, March 26, 2013 Mexico vs. USA (WCQ) ESPN 1.4 2,385,000
Wed, Feb 11, 2009 USA vs. Mexico (WCQ) ESPN2 0.7 1,191,000

Wed, Oct 14, 2009 USA vs. Costa Rica (WCQ) ESPN2 0.6 1,090,000
Birmingham, Ala. was the top market for the match telecast, delivering a 2.9 rating. Rounding out the top five were: Austin, Texas (2.6), Seattle-Takoma, Wash. (2.4), Columbus, Ohio (2.4), and three markets – Los Angeles, San Diego, Hartford-New Haven, Conn., – were tied for fifth place (2.3).
In addition, ESPN’s unprecedented coverage earned critical acclaim as well as garnered praise on social media ranging from the depth of coverage, insightful analysis and reporting, through an outstanding three-person commentating team in the booth for live match telecast. ESPN Front Row compiled a sampling of those comments."

They'd have to start smaller than MLS, but if Hoover began to be a soccer destination regularly, the MLS might take notice and consider a team there in the future. I'd love to see the USA women in Hoover once a year, the Hoover Soccer Club needs new facilities, they could expand on the NCAA games held there, and they might even attract some international qualifying rounds for the World Cup etc.

...and can I dream of seeing UAB men's soccer at the Met with beer for sale?

Who needs Finis St. John when you've got fans like this aspiring to play at the Hoover Met. I just don't get it.

MLS usually starts new teams in places where there is already a strong club team.

Is there a club team in bham?

Trying something new to increase attendance. I don't get it either.

The pros out-weigh the cons when the top cons are "my tailgate spot will have concrete."

Get an NASL team and then they may be in business. I would not mind having a state of the art soccer facility at the Met. They have no hope of attracting a new minor league team with the Barons in Birimingham. They are dreaming if they think a AAA team will move there.

When "trying something new" is defined as moving the games to a stadium too small to hold our current attendance, let alone what's going to happen when we start winning, I can deal with staying in an antequated POS like Lesion Field.

Get a grip, Negative Nancy.

Sounds like you are being discriminatory toward the over the mountain crowd. 03-lmfao

Not advocating the Met, but it could be argued that Hoover is closer to a bigger percentage of the alumni base.

Depends...are the ticket scalpers outside of Legion Field alumni? In that case, I'd say Legion Field is closer to higher percentage.

That may be true, but I'm not one of them, and the Hoover Met is far enough away and inconvenient enough for me to prefer Legion Field.

I wonder about the objectivity of those advocating for it, for that matter.

I don't dislike Hoover or Hooverians.

I just don't like driving to Hoover or driving IN Hoover, and I don't like the Met for football.

Also, did I mention it's even further away from campus than Legion Field?

If I remember correctly, our current lease with Legion Field is ending soon. It makes sense that there has been "chatter". I would expect Mackin to research options other than Legion Field, if nothing else to give UAB a stronger negotiating position with Legion Field. Doesn't mean there is anything to it.

Exactly.

BTW some of us drive well over 100 miles RT to home games. 10 more miles isn't that big a deal really.

That said I would prefer to stay at LF. As I stated in it's current status it is not a viable option at this time.

There are people who would be happy to drive to the Hoover Met to watch UAB Football who will never go to Legion Field -- or to an on-campus stadium at UAB -- because they are convinced the moment they set foot in or near downtown Birmingham a mean black man is going to shoot or stab them and take their money. I know, I am related to many of them.

They would, however, drive to the Hoover Met. My Uncle Ray, who had been a season ticket holder for the Barons since they moved to Hoover, canceled his season tickets this year. His reason: I don't want to get killed walking from my car to the stadium.

Until about two generations of racist bastards die off, this will be a continuing problem.

There is about a 60% retention rate in the racism from generation to generation. It will be a problem for the next 100 years IMO.

Nah, while people are worrying about getting killed in Birmingham, the chances are if they are going to be murdered or killed, it most likely will happen where they frequent...

Dang, now wouldnt that be something, could have went to a baseball game in Birmingham, but instead got mugged, stabbed, shot and touched in the place called, that type of thing dont happen here...
