RE: Mayor of Hoover Says There's Been "Chatter" of UAB Football at the Met
Well, since the money UA systems "stadium money" is about to be used to build Bama Baseball a new one, will this be UAB football's fate?

I don't know. I've personally never been to the Met but I have been to Legion Field and it sucks. I am not saying the Met would be a better choice, that's for you locals to argue out.
However, LF sucks and sucks. If I am correct, The agreement is almost up.
Stadiums and FB fields don't get built over night. That's why the whole stadium proposal fiasco was such a kick in the nuts to this program. Then CGM came in and said the facilities were fine. So...

I'm just saying. Rock, hard place, clock running down. Something has to happen and most likely, the majority of UAB FB's hardcore fans aren't going to be pleased. Why? Because pretty much all the choices suck.

Now THAT is an entirely different discussion. He recently criticized our practice fields and even said he was concerned about player safety because of how bad the field is when it rains. Seems like we have practiced at Legion Field ever since then.

I've read max max capacity of 13-16K when set up like they did for soccer. 35%+ of those seats would be behind an endzone though. Could they do double decker temp seats along one side? 03-razz It won't be permanently reconfigured for football as long as they are hosting the SEC baseball tourney.

Would NEVER trust those!

I don't want to play at the Met.

If/when Legion Field becomes completely untenable, then consider it as an option.

I'm torn on both ways on it. On one hand, if converted fully to football that being the key issue, it's much better place than LF, perception of a "better neighborhood", parking is much better (there's an RV section w/ power/water hookups IIRC) & no Nazi's to deal with plus it would show that Hoover officials are willing to spend money on improvements while B'ham officials argue back & forth over anything/everything & get nowhere. The downside to that is that we still aren't in control of the income from it, it's farther from campus & how would students get there, would students want to come?

If the Met is big enough then we need to get out of the Division I football business.

RE: Mayor of Hoover Says There's Been "Chatter" of UAB Football at the Met
As far as the drive goes it is 10 minutes versus 20 minutes from campus. Not a huge difference. Lets not also forget that we have plenty of students and alumni living in Hoover and Vestavia.

It also gets a wealthier crowd more enticed into going to the games. If attendance is capped at 25,000 (we averaged 16,000 last year), we can still boost the ticket price up a dollar or two if we think we're gonna hit the ceiling (Southern Miss game perhaps).

If we can get more people at the Met, then we inch closer to our goal of something on campus. It might even drag some people downtown when it does happen.

That's false. Hoover is currently spending $600,000 on the standing and less than two years ago spent several million on upgrades and a small expansion of the seating areas.

How much would it cost them to convert the Met to a nice 20,000-25,000 seat football stadium? I wouldn't hold our noses to this idea. I think it could work if money was spent to make something semi-permanent and nice for football there. If we can sell-out 25,000 there for 2 years (and I think we can do that more easily there than at Legion Field) we have a slam-dunk for downtown stadium funding. Hoover might would put the money down to convert to football because even after UAB leaves they will still have use for the Hoover Met "football stadium".

The SEC just signed a new 10 year contract with Hoover with the full knowledge that the Barons were moving. Regions Field does not meet capacity requirements for the SEC tournament.

Now they have a concrete pink elephant. The only event that will be held there will be the occasional hoover football game (but they might have expanded seating at their on campus stadium, so who knows...)

Hoover High has been playing most home games on campus for several years now. This fall they are moving all games back to the Met.

The Logans wanted more luxury boxes and some type of monetary guarantee since they were not making the money they wanted on parking, concessions, etc because the communities outside of Hoover, primarily the areas North, felt Hoover was too far and they couldn't get the Shelby County crowd, either. Cooperate sponsorship is something they wanted to tie into, as well - hence the luxury boxes(there are 23 at the new park, all sold). In today's stadium world a few million to touch up here and there does not cut it.

SEC Baseball coming soon to a Region/Baron Baseball park near/on UAB campus, now that will be SOMETHING TO SEE...
Alabama considered as having home field advantage... until Blazer fans show up in numbers to pull for every team playing against Alabama...

I should have predicated my statement with my earlier post, stating that if they expanded the stadium to fit 25,000 we should consider it. If the cap stays at 16,000 then it is obviously not an option. If they expand the stadium around either right or left field that would have both endzones and one full side of the field covered by stadium seating. The other side can have overflow bleachers and a camera stand that shows the field and (hopefully full) bleachers and it would still be functional for baseball.

That is not going to happen.

At any rate, moving FURTHER AWAY from campus is the absolute opposite of what needs to be happening. I get begged for money all the time, but if UAB plays a single game at the Met, and it's for any reason other than some natural disaster befell Legion Field, UAB will never see another penny of my money.

But, to be fair, you are moving away and will probably cut your money flow to the University anyway, right?

Maybe, but I just got a new job and planned to increase the amount I gave and number of events I attend.

Legion Field is already a natural disaster, so I guess the Met meets your qualification.
