The cards should be free. How can anyone be in support of requiring people to pay money to vote?

As long as the ID is valid for everything that requires an ID it shouldn't be free.

I disagree the right to vote is not one that should be paid for.... *IF* you want to require photo ID, and I for one do, then you need to give the ID out.

If you're giving out a state issued photo ID what's the harm in letting it stand for other uses?

An endorsement perhaps...stating you're a registered voter? I like this idea.

We should all be working together to get more people to vote, period! Have voting on the weekends or make the second Tuesday a holiday, allow more/better/easier absentee processes, vote by mail, on-line, etc. We can make things better without sacrifcing voter integrity.

No we can't. Do you have another idea on how we could make sure illegals don't vote?

Why? I'm not at all certain that having more people voting is all that great an objective. Having better informed people voting is one objective I'd put higher on the priority scale. I don't really see the benefit of having a bunch of clueless people vote. And the ones we have voting now are clueless enough.

Source?
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/24/us/jus...olina.html
Quote:South Carolina provided data comparing its registered voters to those who had an identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, including a demographic breakdown of the 240,000 registered voters who it said did not have such identification.

That number is pretty well discredited in the rest of the article. Looks like 80,000 may be a realistic number. That's still a lot. But I have a hard time believing that any substantial portion of that number can't afford a photo ID; I would imagine the vast majority don't have one for other reasons.

What if a photo ID card that will suffice is free to anyone who truly can't afford it? How do you feel about requiring photo ID then?

The issue for me isn't the cost of the ID. I feel the practical effect of the law will be that MAYBE a dozen people will be dissuaded from voting under someone else's name, but perhaps thousands of voters without ID cards who would otherwise cast a ballot won't because either they can't or won't go out of their way to pick up a photo ID just to cast a ballot. Imagine if everyone had to do this. Would you go to your local DMV and wait in line just for the purposes of being able to go to the polls and wait in line to cast a ballot? What if you didn't know about this requirement beforehand and had to cast a provisional ballot, which would only count if you went to the DMV within 7 days and waited in line, and then had to drive to the county clerk's office to show them the ID? I think most people wouldn't bother. You'd have to be really enthusiastic about voting to jump through those hoops, and maybe you are, but that isn't the case with most people. The practical effect of this law is disenfranchisement of minorities and, not coincidentally, better results for the GOP.

This is the point I was trying to get to above that you resisted approaching. You don't want more people to vote. And who are you to judge whether they are adequately informed? Maybe they are informed enough on the issues they care most about, and that is the basis for their vote. Maybe it's none of your business whether they are informed or not, and maybe it doesn't matter one iota whether they are or not.

It doesn't matter how informed they are. It matters if they are citizens. That's the point of most of this thread.

That and how the Dem's steal elections through the votes of illegal immigrants.

When a city is forced to put a D or R next to a candidate's name because the voters are too stupid to know what party they're in, then it's time to have a voter IQ test.

Way to misinterpret completely what I said. I don't think we should have a test. I really think we should reduce the barriers, and that's why I've said there ought to be an ID card that works for voting purposes that's free to anyone who can't afford to pay for one. What I'm saying is that we should do a better job of educating voters.

False. Educated voters have jobs and want to keep their money...and vote Conservative.

4 years to get an ID.
1 day to vote.

It is exceedingly far, far easier to get an ID than it is to vote.

STOP, STOP, STOP the BS about ID's disenfranchising people. IT SIMPLY ISN'T FREAKING TRUE.
