What are my CEO's qualifications to manage a software development company? Hint: he has none, he has an MBA and all that stuff.

People like me are his qualifications.

Correct. So, when you are hiring someone to run your transportation department, what would you want? I'm going to guess that you'd want someone who has worked in transportation in some way.

You're completely missing my point. To use your own example.

My CEO is the one running the transportation department, he doesn't know dick about transportation, I do.

We'll see what they ultimately do. I suspect they won't fully shut it down, they'll just downsize it and put more power in the states' hands.

Not the plan. I think you are misjudging Trump's intention. He was close to shutting it down when his first term ended.

I'm not sure that most of his conservative voices around him want it 100% eliminated. They'd lose power over pushing conservative agendas to education at the local level. Granted, outside of the big cities the local boards are usually much more conservative.

The top of any department needs skills that have ZERO to do with the details of the department.

That's one reason you aren't really qualified to judge somebody else. You don't really have a concept of the postition.

I do, b/c I worked with agency heads like that for 15 years.

If I'm owner of Amazon, who do I hire to do the logistics/transportation? Someone who understands the business of logistics. They wouldn't hire a former congressman who was on reality TV before getting into politics.

Want to make a bet on it?

So far, you're striking out in this thread, IMO.

On whether he completely closes the DoEd or not? Sure. I say in 4 years there will still be a federal department of education.

You're going to be really disappointed. Very few nominees have experience like that.

It isn't necessary, b/c that's not the job! It's a business management position.

How in the world do you know that? You don't. People in those positions are hired for their ability to manage and get things done. A person in that position at Amazon is not going to be doing any logistics planning, he will hire people to do that.

Basically you're saying my CEO has to learn how to code.

Typical.

All right. We'll see. No need to put up anything but bragging rights.

He drives the direction of the department. Do you not understand that? He needs people who will do the work, but at the end of the day he has to understand the business and the direction he wants to go with it.

Maybe Duffy has that experience. I don't know. I feel like we didn't have that the last 4 years either. I don't want a politician driving the direction of a major cornerstone department, I want someone who knows how to plan and execute. Someone who truly has been in a business role before, not just a politician.

I think I understand what the head of a federal agency needs much better than you, since I worked with several of them full time for 15 years.

Here's an example. Where do CEOs go when they change jobs? Another CEO job in their same industry? Nope.

Usually to a completely different industry. Why? Because the requirement of the job is to know how to be a CEO, NOT to know the details of the business. That's easy to learn. Being an effective CEO isn't easy, but it transfers across industries. Same with federal agencies.

So you're insisting my CEO learns to code?

I'll let him know next time I'm in a meeting with him, but that's rare since he knows dick about what we do.

No, I'm saying the CEO needs to understand how code works and have the correct people to write the code for the specific need of the company. If you don't know anything about it then you have a hard time hiring the right people below you to enact your plan and direction for the company.

It is no different in a government agency.

So have I. I saw political appointments that were great, and I saw political appointments that were awful.

I haven't worked for a cabinet head, but I have worked for smaller agency heads before.

He knows dick about coding. Not one CEO nor many of my managers have. Not one.

My CEO right now has people he answers to also. He worries about things like EBITDA. He could give chit about code.

Nope. Trump is the CEO. These are department heads in his corporation. You hire someone as your department head who understands that part of the business. They aren't going to hire someone who knows dick about transportation to head up that part of your business. Just like you wouldn't hire an engineer to be your finance guy.
