Btw---I dont see a WWIII. The Russians man and equipment losses of the last 3 years suggest that Russia has largely lost the means to take on NATO with their conventional forces. But that is besides the point. With their hands completely full just battling Ukraine alone, the last thing the Russians want is direct conflict with all of NATO.

Putin has aimed to get what he can through the aggressive use of his military combined with a little nuclear bluster when needed. Thats been more than enough with a weak president like Biden leading NATO (often leading from the rear). Putin has managed to get 20% of Ukraine that way without any real risk to his nation. Well, that has changed with todays announcement---and even todays announcement is only an incremental change. Not enough to cause the Russians to immediately lose interest in more war---but enough to make additional battlefield gains not only more difficult---but also substantially more costly. Hopefully in a few months when Trump rides into office---Russia will have absorbed enough damage to motivate a sudden interest in a meaningful peace compromise. I think the Ukrainians taking 6 refineries completely off line (about 20% of capacity) is about all it would really take to make peace negotiations very attractive for the people and leadership of Russia. A perfect set up for Trump to ride in and make this crap stop with a land for security deal everyone can live with.

Im one who thinks Biden blew this from the start. I think everyone would have been sitting around a peace table months ago (perhaps even years ago) had we not slow walked weapons approvals and done this in early 2022. Heck, I think the whole thing could have been avoided in 2021 had Biden simply told Putin "all options are on the table if you invade Ukraine". The truth is--I dont even think he had to say a word. If he had simply arranged the sale of a block of several hundred long range SCALP/Storm Shadow/Harpoon cruise missiles to Ukraine in 2021 when satellite and intelligence assets said Russia was planning an invasion----I doubt Russia would have risked invading at all. This all could and should have been avoided.
