If Wisconsin fires OC Phil Longo, get him immediately.

Too much personal baggage and we will need an interpreter.

Great list. I like their choice of Drew Svoboda. I’d also like to see a contract loaded with incentives like Cignetti’s at Indiana.

I'd take Lembo in a NY minute. Players love him too.

I second that. Pete Lembo would be a fantastic hire as he has familiarity with many currently on the staff and could help prevent disruption.
I know that coach transitions are never ideal in terms of keeping the personnel that you like, but I really like our Defensive Line coach, and overall our DC has done a very good job all things considered.

Hambone throws his hat in the ring!
From the “Does Bloomgren get fired … “ thread:
“I don’t expect a miracle worker…. But I do expect to get something for our $1mm+ salary. If we’re going to lose to schools nobody cares about, I’ll coach the team for a lot less.”

Tim Beck: Vanderbilt OC. Previously at NMSU. Off the top of my head, Vanderbilt brought in NMSU's last year's OC, head coach (as a consultant; he wanted to semi-retire), and QB. We can't make all those same changes in one go.
Derek Mason: Currently HC at MTSU. Previously at Vanderbilt. I know Vanderbilt is similar academically and that the SEC is massively more difficult than C-USA/AAC, but those teams were so poor that I wouldn't be too enthusiastic for this. It's akin to hiring David Shaw.
Tyler Santucci: DC at Georgia Tech this year and Duke last year. Had a one-year stint as co-DC at TAMU. He spent 4 total years at A&M and 1 at Texas State. He's also had some time as a position coach at Wake Forest. He's been all over, some experience at relatively high academic schools and some experience in Texas, but not both at the same time, and never any one place very long. His longest coaching stay was at Stony Brook where he finished playing and moved straight to a graduate assistant position and stayed four more years.
Keith Patterson: Abilene Christian HC since 2022. Previously 3 years Texas Tech DC. He was at Tulsa from 2003-2010; the Toad took him to Pittsburgh but not ASU. Patterson signed to be DC for Arkansas State and then reneged and took the DC job at West Virginia 6 weeks later.

RE: Moving on...the Next Rice Football Head Coach
I think Chesney would be a good choice as long as he keeps John Kay as an assistant head coach. He will need a lot of Texas high school connections since he is from the NE. (10-27-2024 09:17 PM)gsloth Wrote: Chesney, who took over at JMU from Cignetti and came from Holy Cross, was one of the guys I would have wanted considered last year. Probably can't get him this year, but he's been successful everywhere he's gone (one losing season, his first at Holy Cross, in 15 seasons as a head coach).
But saw Hemphill, his DC at JMU, mentioned on one of those lists. And he's been DC at Wake Forest and co-DC at Duke, so he's got recent recruiting at good academic schools in his background.

Matt Young, in an article today behind the Chronicle paywall, lists Drew Mehringer, Tom Herman, KC Keeler, Skip Holtz, Jon Kay, Drew Svoboda, and Clint Killough as possible candidates.

KC Keeler has won (and won big) everywhere he has ever been. He is older (but so was Wayne Graham). I hope we give him a real look.

I'll be upset if McClelland brings in Skip Holz. He did an underwhelming job at LTU, and he runs a similar offensive system as Mike Bloomgren.
Same for KC Keeler, although I doubt he wants such an extreme challenge as Rice at this stage in his career.

Keeler does have one of the lower salaries in the country though at $625,000. An extra $300,000-400,000 per year at Rice could make the challenge worth it if nobody else offers

True, but I bet we have no problem finding some young guys who are hungry for the challenge. If someone comes in and leads us to eight wins a year, that coach will be a hot commodity in the coaching market. Having that level of success at Rice would really propel someone's career.

Holtz makes it sound in this article from a few months ago that he has no desire in any G5 jobs.
https://www.foxsports.com/stories/ufl/wi...skip-holtz
"A lot of these Group of 5 schools, the expectations are higher than the reality or the investment that they're willing to make," Holtz said. "You always hear people talk about accomplishing more with less. I was just soured on it. … Right now, I've had a couple calls with an opportunity to go back to the Group of 5. Which I have not had a lot of interest in.
"I have turned those opportunities down to stay where I am. I love the job that I have. I have really enjoyed working with these athletes and building those relationships. And watching them grow and develop. I just want to be excited about what I'm doing."
Holtz said he's had phone calls every offseason at Birmingham to gauge his interest in college head coaching jobs with Group of 5 schools, even interviewing for one job after his first season with the Stallions. But he ultimately decided to stay.
"I am not looking for another job," he said. "I'm not applying for a bunch of jobs. I'm not out beating the bushes, like ‘Hey, let's see if I can get that one. Or that one.' And if I can't get anything else, I'll come back. My plan is to come back.
As for Keeler, the guy can obviously win and win quickly. But, I don't know if his age will be a deterrent to attracting talent.
As others have said, the main priority is something that can win very quickly, whether it is with the current players or a slew of transfers. We cannot approach this hiring from a 2017 mindset, where Bloom was going to be given a long leash, build a program, etc. I'd offer a guaranteed (except to fire for cause) three-year deal (not five) that has a one-year extension option at the university's discretion. Whether we need to have a payment due to the coach if we don't exercise the option is something I'd have to think more about. Pay him a large salary and have massive incentive bonuses. If he can't hit two bowls in three years and a 8 or 9 season, kick him to the curb and do it all over again. He gets money and we get a fresh start without muddling our way through another 2, 3, 4-win "progress" type of coach. The amount of time we wasted keeping Bloom employed beyond 2021 (I'll give everyone a mulligan during the 2020 COVID season) is simply insane.
As a litmus test, I and others would be concerned if the coaching candidates don't ask questions about the university's level of commitment to reach bowl games, conference championships, etc.
