Moving on from Moving on?...the Next Rice Football Head Coach: Scott Abell - GoodOwl - 10-27-2024 06:09 PM

Really want to be cautiously optimistic about this next Football head Coaching hire.

Positives:
+ new Athletic Dir
+ relatively new President from a school that seems to care more about winning football than Rice has in 60+ years
+ decent EZF good enough to recruit better
+ somewhat better group of schools in AAC than in CUSA

Negatives:
- Rice's 60+ year football history of apparent apathy
- apparent apathy of too many fans
- apparent apathy of most students matriculating
- Rice's displacement from mainstream in America, making it harder to recruit players who might care about that
- financial apathy relative to other schools

funny...it's football, but tired of having our "Lucy" Administration pull the ball away from us at the last minute with too many of its choices of new hires for football. Just give us a normal guy, who gets America, who likes to compete, comes from a winning tradition, and can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n...

Rice's displacement from mainstream in America? You've got to be kidding.

I’d rather see names and rumors listed here, rather than a rehash of every other negative thread.

I guess I can throw out a name myself - what about Major Applewhite?

Do we think the salary will be brought up to at least UNT's level ($1.3M plus up to 585K bonus)?

I don't really know where to start on possible candidates but a few ideas off the top of my head:

-Bryant Vincent @ULM
-Nate Woody @Army
-Blake Gideon @Texas
-Jerheme Urban @Trinity (TX)

Too bad we didn’t bring in Cignetti when he was considering D2 jobs to become a HC, but I think we need someone that hungry, not someone like our outgoing coach who thought this job was owed to him.

I figured some on this board might list Drew Chronic. He's 50 years old, but another Rice coach was "old" when Rice hired him. This is not my suggestion, but I'm expecting his name to be mentioned.

The coach of Incarnate Word has me intrigued.

I don't know...you think Major could really win here now? I mean, Rice is not South Ala. He's had some good aspects and some not so good. I would like a guy like him to kick butt as a head coach by now. I mean, a Deion Sanders kind of guy could work here (not a Trent Dilfer)...so I don't know.

I suppose we could talk to him and ask him what's changed from his perspective, since he was here, since he was at UH, et cetera...what has he learned and what would he do different from Day 1 to field a winning team at Rice and head to perhaps Vandy heights (weird as that may sound today, Texas was lucky they were just slightly better than Vandy--certainly not a #5 team, probably low Top25 is what UT really is right now without the built-in bias of the polls.)

We need a guy who can come in here and win right away at this point. NIL era is no longer about 4 year plan and getting all your guys. Take what we got, add a few recruits and transfers, and go win against next year's schedule. Then Year 2 win 10 or 11 games. That's the thing I'd at least want to hear said with confidence in the interview: something like "If I'm not in contention for Conference Champ at least by Year 3 then fire me." We need someone with big balls and confidence, and if his plan is sound, we need to listen and work WITH the coach not against him, and change the culture of football at Rice. Get some corporate sponsors, for instance. let football andthe three major men's sports in general breathe a little--take Rice's proverbial knee off sports' neck after 60+ years of bondage. Pick Rice's pants up off the ground and let Rice sports walk like a man anew.

The last thing I want to see is another person who they say "gets Rice." Clearly, we need someone who doesn't, because "getting Rice" in sports means losing, losing, losing. OG didn't "get Rice" as much as he figured out how to make it work at Rice, in some cases in spite of Rice. And OG "Got BASEBALL", way more than he "got Rice" so he won and won and won. He won first, with what he had here and what he could quickly bring in, HIS way, THEN built up his infrastructure. We need that model in Football and Men's Basketball. OG was an alpha male, and we desperately need an alpha male Head coach again in football. Someone who has played with the boys and knows how to play, and win. Take his'n and beat their'n....

Getting Rice has not worked, more or less ever in 60+ years here. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Either Rice Admins have been insane in their approach to sports (my guess) or they intentionally prefer to lose (greater than zero chance of this for some past admins, which is a tragedy). Either way, it hurts the University's reputation and hurts all alumni.

Hire someone who "gets football" and "gets winning." Then bring in some students who "get sports as being a normal and valuable part of mainstream society" (newsflash: loving major college sports and being smart are NOT mutually exclusive as has been the wrongheaded Rice ethos more or less for 60+ years. Let's finally throw that stupidity away in the trash bin where it belongs.) Reach out to people in Houston and the Med Center who "get football" and make Rice sports fun to be at anew, which includes winning a lot, and playing and beating opponents people have heard of and care about and want to come out and see us beat. Make Rice football a super value anew and a worthy thing to spend your Saturday afternoon on anew.

I really hope that Pres. DesRoches brings some of GA Tech's attitude for football success to Rice with this opportunity. No, they are not UGA and Rice is not UT but that doesn't mean Rice should never play to be in the Top 25 in football or basketball.

And it would be nice to use his connections to the other school to schedule a few series soon with GA Tech and Rice in football and Men's basketball, maybe some of their athletics ethos can rub off on us here.

Without a doubt, this hire is probably the most important ever as the program is truly on the precipice, if it's not already behind us. Another miss and it's over. And let's face it, the last 3 were clearly that in various ways.

It's been 10 yrs since i have had any level of enthusiasm (and i have seen something like 300 Rice FB games, with only a small handful not at HRS), so let's see....

Yes! Attitude can be a very good thing!

Quote:Johnny moved to this big town
To be who he could be
But the tough guys on the sidewalk
They don't want him to be free
But he knows he has the power
He knows someday they'll be dead
They can't get him to turn around
He keeps walking straight ahead

'Cuz he's got attitude
And it will get him through
And he's got attitude
And it will see him though

Backstage Mary
She grew up with nothing but hunger in her purse
All the fancy ladies tell her
"You'll only go from bad to worse."
But she just keeps on believing
She tells them she's doing fine
They get rich while she gets smart
She's growing stronger all the time

'Cuz she's got attitude
And it will get her through
And she's got attitude
And it will see her through

Everybody knows who "they" are
They need no address
They make sure things are going their way
And the country's in a mess
As they buy that land, start that war
Keep those people poor
They don't care if people aren't
Going to take it anymore

And they've got attitude
And it will get them through
And they've got attitude
And it will see them through

Lots of good possibilities out there. But my feeling is that to really get this program going we are going to have to pony up some real money for somebody with experience, connections and imagination. And, most importantly, knows how to coach both aspects of the game…. The one on the field and the one involving NIL, transfers, high school recruitment, etc
To get one of those… 1.5-2 million.

Lots of interesting names and I don’t follow other teams close enough to provide any input. I won’t cry if they at reach out to James Casey. No experience as a head coach or even coordinator being obvious drawbacks.

Chesney, who took over at JMU from Cignetti and came from Holy Cross, was one of the guys I would have wanted considered last year. Probably can't get him this year, but he's been successful everywhere he's gone (one losing season, his first at Holy Cross, in 15 seasons as a head coach).

But saw Hemphill, his DC at JMU, mentioned on one of those lists. And he's been DC at Wake Forest and co-DC at Duke, so he's got recent recruiting at good academic schools in his background.
