RE: Moving on...the Next Rice Football Head Coach
Drew Mehringer really has my attention. He may be our guy if he's ready to be a head coach. He played for Rice, graduated from Rice, and was an assistant here for three years. He's an exceptional recruiter, and worked before as a recruiting coordinator. He sounds like a real offensive mastermind. Here's his Biography from the Oregon site...

I'll be upset if McClelland brings in Skip Holz. He did an underwhelming job at LTU, and he runs a similar offensive system as Mike Bloomgren.

Same for KC Keeler, although I doubt he wants such an extreme challenge as Rice at this stage in his career.

Holtz makes it sound in this article from a few months ago that he has no desire in any G5 jobs.

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/ufl/wi...skip-holtz

"A lot of these Group of 5 schools, the expectations are higher than the reality or the investment that they're willing to make," Holtz said. "You always hear people talk about accomplishing more with less. I was just soured on it. … Right now, I've had a couple calls with an opportunity to go back to the Group of 5. Which I have not had a lot of interest in.

"I have turned those opportunities down to stay where I am. I love the job that I have. I have really enjoyed working with these athletes and building those relationships. And watching them grow and develop. I just want to be excited about what I'm doing."

Holtz said he's had phone calls every offseason at Birmingham to gauge his interest in college head coaching jobs with Group of 5 schools, even interviewing for one job after his first season with the Stallions. But he ultimately decided to stay.

"I am not looking for another job," he said. "I'm not applying for a bunch of jobs. I'm not out beating the bushes, like ‘Hey, let's see if I can get that one. Or that one.' And if I can't get anything else, I'll come back. My plan is to come back.

As for Keeler, the guy can obviously win and win quickly. But, I don't know if his age will be a deterrent to attracting talent.

As others have said, the main priority is something that can win very quickly, whether it is with the current players or a slew of transfers. We cannot approach this hiring from a 2017 mindset, where Bloom was going to be given a long leash, build a program, etc. I'd offer a guaranteed (except to fire for cause) three-year deal (not five) that has a one-year extension option at the university's discretion. Whether we need to have a payment due to the coach if we don't exercise the option is something I'd have to think more about. Pay him a large salary and have massive incentive bonuses. If he can't hit two bowls in three years and a 8 or 9 season, kick him to the curb and do it all over again. He gets money and we get a fresh start without muddling our way through another 2, 3, 4-win "progress" type of coach. The amount of time we wasted keeping Bloom employed beyond 2021 (I'll give everyone a mulligan during the 2020 COVID season) is simply insane.

As a litmus test, I and others would be concerned if the coaching candidates don't ask questions about the university's level of commitment to reach bowl games, conference championships, etc.

Good post. I'm happy to hear that Holz wouldn't be interested, and my feeling is that McClelland will want to go into a completely different direction anyway. Holz is old, and so is Keeler. This job is going to take energy.

I don't know much about coaching contracts, but I know enough to realize that the cushy contract given to Bloomgren won't work. It didn't demand enough in results. A 6-6 record and bowl loss isn't enough by any standard, even at Rice, but it was enough for Leebron and Karlgaard.

I wouldn't have a problem with Coach Nextup getting a four-year contract that's loaded with incentives. If he can't get real results by the end of year three, buy out the last year, and move on. Long-term rebuilds are a thing of the past. Three seasons is a realistic amount of time to turn a program around now. That's the only good thing about the portal.

The bolded sentence stuck out to me.

Coach: "Are you committed to reach bowl games, conference championships, etc.?"

University hiring admin: "Yeah, we are committed to reach bowl games, conference championships, etc."

Coach: "Okay."

University hiring admin: "Okay."

University: "Are you committed?"

Coach: "Yeah."

University: "Good enough for us."

That is meaningless unless specific questions are asked and answered on both sides, instead of meaningless phrases and word salads.

Something along the lines of:

Coach: "How much additional real money (not in-kind balance-sheet maneuverings) I mean actual university budget line-items, not additional fuind-raised goals, but today's university dollars in cold, hard cash are you willing to invest in each of the following areas with specific enumerated additional increased dollar amounts for each:
+ assistant coaching salaries broken down specifically by each position
+ In-state recruiting
+ out-of-state recruiting
+ specific additional facilities we both enumerate and agree upon
+ additional transportation budgets
+ additional increase in marketing budget, including specific measures broken down granularly of new marketing outreach programs with dollar amounts for each above and beyond what is being spent now, which is the baseline expenditure
+ new corporate sponsorships in and specifically for athletics in general and football in particular
+ new corporate endowments for specific additional positions
+ specific dollar amount increase for student attendance/promotion with the goal of getting regular attendance of 75% to 80% of student body at football games (free food/student tailgating (non-alcohol), student swag and clothing giveaways every week, student pre-game and in-game contests prize money, et cetera...
+ specific dollar amount increase for general public attendance/promotion with the goal of getting regular attendance of increase of 75% to 100% or more, not including student body each year at football games (free food/ tailgating (non-alcohol), student swag and clothing giveaways every week, pre-game and in-game contests prize money, et cetera...

University: "We are committed to these specific dollar amount increases in each of those areas broken down granularaly by category: $________________.00"

Coach: "You willing to put that in writing?"

University: "Yes, we are. It will be part of your contract."

University: "Coach, specifically, how many wins minimum are you willing to commit to in writing each year for a three-year contract, with university option for fourth, and are you willing to be fired for not being in conference championship game by Year 3?"

Coach: "well, gee, um, I, uh..."

University: "NEXT!"

Actual football coach answer: "If I am not in the conference championship game by Year 3 , fire me!"

Actual football coach answer: "If Rice is not in the Top 25 by Year 5, fire me!"

Even Vanderbilt made the Top 25, along with Army and Navy this season so far. If they can, we can. get a coach who is willing to commit to it and put his own job security on the line for it. Pay him an average Div I coaching salary to do it, not the bottom-level salary. Pay his assistants. With NIL nowadays, the concerns about cheating are now markedly reduced. All the funny business is more out in the open.

Find a coach who will take what he has and create schemes (a la ruowls) to make them successful, not stick to a specific, rigid offense scheme that may or may not work here. Open up the game and score, score, score! To heck with TOP. Run and shoot. Give fans something to watch. Get a DEFENSIVE-minded coach who will shut other teams down like we just saw Vandy do to Alabama. NIL-pay the best kicker in the country to play at Rice. That should be a no-brainer.

The only one from the Thresher's list that seems interesting is the SMU OC. Maybe the IWU head coach. Beschorner has an awful head coach record, Mack was not a great OC and the others just seem random and uninspiring.

The Athletic's candidates are slightly more intriguing, with the Oregon OC, LSU Co-OC, the Miami OC and the SMU DC. No thanks to Mehringer or Matt Wells.

Why not Mehringer? Their saying that he could land a big time head coaching job soon. He's actually at the top of my list.

I believe that the real issue is if football should be continued at all.
I say that as a diehard owl fan, having the experience of not only seeing them defeat Texas in 1965, but also in 1994.
A new, or appropriately refurbished stadium would be ~ 300-600 million dollars.
Increase salaries ? 2 million more per year, maybe more ( I know of position coaches at P4 getting more than a million)
NIL support
The question of salaries for athletes, estimating by P4 schools at 15-20 million a year. I do believe Rice would not try to match, but it is still out there.
The question of really big donors. Rice has had a culture of disdain for athletes dating back to before my time there. This was/is ? more aimed at football than other sports.
Unlike SMU/TCU I have not detected the level of donor support likely to accomplish these goals.
My few thousands of dollars of support a year will not move the needle.
Is the a level of big donor support out the waiting for an admin that will make a 2-3 hundred million dollar investment to match a similar amount the university commitment?
I would love to see the money materialize, but fear that Rice will not come up with enough of it's own to spur the level of donations necessary

It sounds like we're about to go full throttle in football for the first time in my life, and I'm 50 years old. I think we'll do our absolute best with the resources we have, whether it's $200,000,000 or $400,000,000. NIL will always be limited, but I guess we'll do the best best we can with what we have. It's a start. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I may be in the minority, but of the purported $150-200 million to be allocated for facilities, I would rather put that money towards the program w.r.t. to coaching, support personnel, player academic support, as well as anciliary programs (e.g., the MOB) and then use a portion of those funds to support the Olympic sports. The facilities, while not state of the art, are fine. Between HRS and Tudor, I would upgrade Tudor (and parking) so that Tudor could also be used as a venue.

On the other hand, if we insist in using those funds for HRS, then we should emulate what Cypress Fairbanks ISD has done with the Berry Center

The Berry Center

My wife and I have watched several concerts there (Third Day, Switchfoot, Jeremy Camp, etc.). And the football stadium is more in line with the calls to downsize HRS.

Just my thoughts.

Man, I hope we can raise the entire $400,000,000 so we can do whatever we want. Hopefully McClelland can work some magic. He has been a great fundraiser at Louisiana Tech and Vanderbilt. It would be nice if we could release the news about the stadium renovation to coincide with the new head coach announcement in a few weeks.

Many of us have advocated more emphasis on women's and "Olympic " sports for years. I still do.
But to make any viable attempt to make rice football relevant will require both the university and BIG donors to step up. Anything else is a waste of resources that could well be spent on programs that are actually successful.

I feel like all of the resources need to be poured into football, basketball, and baseball. Those three are the most visible, and will determine our future on the national landscape, not Olympic sports.

Understood. Succinctly, my point is don’t spend on facilities right now. If we really are about to raise >$150 million for football, leave HRS alone and invest it in the on field product: Coaching, NIL, staffing and support, the MOB, investments and community outreach, and then use a % of the remainder to bless Olympic sports. To me, there is no point in building this impressive facility if our team and product on the field is lacking.

I suspect that the admin sees a renovation of HRS as an investment into it making it an attractive venue for big events in the city, and only secondarily as an investment into the football program.

If it were purely football then I agree we'd get much better ROI just putting into directly into all the things you said

Rallying to reach an APR bowl appearance could demonstrate that this program’s weakest link was Bloomgren, which would create more interest for the job.

Memphis lost to UTSA today. Their playoff hopes are now over, lets win another one.

Tom Herman is having an awful year again at FAU. I wonder what is happening there? I knew some players who.played under him at Rice and thought he had a great football mind.

Here's another from The NYT...
