I guess I can throw out a name myself - what about Major Applewhite?
I don't know...you think Major could really win here now? I mean, Rice is not South Ala. He's had some good aspects and some not so good. I would like a guy like him to kick butt as a head coach by now. I mean, a Deion Sanders kind of guy could work here (not a Trent Dilfer)...so I don't know.
I suppose we could talk to him and ask him what's changed from his perspective, since he was here, since he was at UH, et cetera...what has he learned and what would he do different from Day 1 to field a winning team at Rice and head to perhaps Vandy heights (weird as that may sound today, Texas was lucky they were just slightly better than Vandy--certainly not a #5 team, probably low Top25 is what UT really is right now without the built-in bias of the polls.)
We need a guy who can come in here and win right away at this point. NIL era is no longer about 4 year plan and getting all your guys. Take what we got, add a few recruits and transfers, and go win against next year's schedule. Then Year 2 win 10 or 11 games. That's the thing I'd at least want to hear said with confidence in the interview: something like "If I'm not in contention for Conference Champ at least by Year 3 then fire me." We need someone with big balls and confidence, and if his plan is sound, we need to listen and work WITH the coach not against him, and change the culture of football at Rice. Get some corporate sponsors, for instance. let football andthe three major men's sports in general breathe a little--take Rice's proverbial knee off sports' neck after 60+ years of bondage. Pick Rice's pants up off the ground and let Rice sports walk like a man anew.
The last thing I want to see is another person who they say "gets Rice." Clearly, we need someone who doesn't, because "getting Rice" in sports means losing, losing, losing. OG didn't "get Rice" as much as he figured out how to make it work at Rice, in some cases in spite of Rice. And OG "Got BASEBALL", way more than he "got Rice" so he won and won and won. He won first, with what he had here and what he could quickly bring in, HIS way, THEN built up his infrastructure. We need that model in Football and Men's Basketball. OG was an alpha male, and we desperately need an alpha male Head coach again in football. Someone who has played with the boys and knows how to play, and win. Take his'n and beat their'n....
Getting Rice has not worked, more or less ever in 60+ years here. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Either Rice Admins have been insane in their approach to sports (my guess) or they intentionally prefer to lose (greater than zero chance of this for some past admins, which is a tragedy). Either way, it hurts the University's reputation and hurts all alumni.
Hire someone who "gets football" and "gets winning." Then bring in some students who "get sports as being a normal and valuable part of mainstream society" (newsflash: loving major college sports and being smart are NOT mutually exclusive as has been the wrongheaded Rice ethos more or less for 60+ years. Let's finally throw that stupidity away in the trash bin where it belongs.) Reach out to people in Houston and the Med Center who "get football" and make Rice sports fun to be at anew, which includes winning a lot, and playing and beating opponents people have heard of and care about and want to come out and see us beat. Make Rice football a super value anew and a worthy thing to spend your Saturday afternoon on anew.
I really hope that Pres. DesRoches brings some of GA Tech's attitude for football success to Rice with this opportunity. No, they are not UGA and Rice is not UT but that doesn't mean Rice should never play to be in the Top 25 in football or basketball.
And it would be nice to use his connections to the other school to schedule a few series soon with GA Tech and Rice in football and Men's basketball, maybe some of their athletics ethos can rub off on us here.
