If they are, it'll be with a new coach.

I'm not convinced he leaves. I'm sure he'll have options, but especially this offseason he can be very selective. If he knows his guys are coming back, he doesn't need to jump at the first bad P5 gig.

He'll be gone. He doesn't come across as money driven, but he makes just over $500k. Penn St and Texas Tech salaries pull in $2 mill a year. He's not stupid. These guys know they need to strike while the iron is hot.

If recent history is any indication. He'll be gone:

Meh...what half way decent job was still open when they announced this?

May fell into the same trap Fickell did. Went further than most expected, and he wasn't going to bail on his team during their run, and schools weren't going to wait on him.

Although, he was able to do the same thing Fickell did. Worked himself into a nice pay raise for a year by saying he's "committed to the program", then he'll be gone at the first good job offer next year.

If they would have lost earlier in the tourney, IMO he would have left.

That's not the way basketball works. A school would have absolutely waited on May if they thought May was interested (and they would know even while games were being played). Getting that coach before the tournament ends isn't nearly as pressing as getting your coach right before National Signing Day in college football.

Look at Texas Tech. They hired the North Texas coach, waiting until after North Texas won the NIT (which was only 2 days before FAU lost).

May would not have needed to bail on FAU during their run. The only minor inconvenience would be he'd be a few days late for the Portal, but he'd have FAU connections and the Portal hasn't really gotten going yet. Teams would have waited on May if May was interested.

May could afford to wait. Just like for several years Fickell could afford to wait. Not every coach jumps at the first bigger job.

I know teams could have waited. But when John Brannen and Wes Miller were hired on April 14, people went nuts because they were so far behind and had to scrape a class together, and people used that as an excuse for years to come.

You didn't answer my question. What half way decent job was still available on March 30 when they announced that? Texas Tech?

IMO I don't think Fickell "waited for the perfect spot" as much as you think he did. But I'm not going to get into re-hashing all that again.

He very clearly turned down mid-tier big ten jobs. He also didn't seem to have much interest in leaving the midwest. He ended up taking the 3rd or 4th best Big Ten job (depending on where you have Penn State). He could have had a P5 job after year 2, 3, and 4.

Year 5 he could have too, but it does seem clear he pushed off talk to not interupt that historic season.

I don't know what jobs were still available March 30. Again, that's not the point. Just because they filled it with someone else prior, doesn't mean May didn't pass on it prior to that date. I was pretty clear I expected May to be back because he could be patient and may want to try to get a bigger job. I'd be shocked if say Georgia Tech didn't make a run at him...as an example. I doubt he'd have been interested in that job.

Dusty May is the Mick Cronin of IU. A ball boy who went there and got into coaching.

Right now I'd say he's a vulture circling around waiting for Mike Woodson to become a carcass.

The thing about Fickell is when his 2021 team was set up for the big kill with all the preseason hype, he delivered. If FAU flames out next year he'll end up settling for a Wisconsin-esque job like Fickell ended up doing.

Incredibly, May is the second person with that career arc. Lawrence Frank was a student manager for Bobby Knight's IU teams in the late 80s, and he eventually became an NBA head coach.

I love me a good 6:20 tip time out west. Gives me a chance to stretch, hydrate, and take my multivitamins before climbing into bed by 10:00.

Love 9 pm tips (or 920 here). Kids are in bed. I can drink my Manhattan and enjoy the game.

Ain’t gonna happen.

I think it was OKI that asked was our ’92 FF an aberration? Well that’s a great Q. We went toe to toe with the fab five (Very skilled and tall team). The next year E-8 OT loss to NC. Maybe with that win we could’ve kicked the door down. But it didn’t happen. We rarely got enough high end talent. A lot of our recruits were from junior college or someone with some flaws / recruiting issues that we took. It’s just tough to break into even a consistent top 15 program. We can dream I guess. It’s just been so long since ‘92 or even our last E-8.

Well, the talent was markedly better than anyone since then has been able to land, but you are essentially correct. Several years without a full complement of scholarship players, or an otherwise great team with one position that was below par.

You have to wonder if the outlaw image that Huggins cultivated became self-limiting. For every recruit who wanted to play for the hot new coach at a historically-powerful program, there were probably two who didn’t want to play at UNLV East for Jerry Tarkanian Jr.

Told ya that Sweet 16 game between KSU and MSU would better than this one.

With this Championship, the right coach, a top 5 recruiting class coming in, back in a very formidable again Big East, I'd say UConn is BACK.

Congrats to UConn... well played dominant tourney.
A couple of UConn inspired random thoughts
...has there been a more dominant D1 hoops SCHOOL in the last 30 years or so than UConn? 5 Mens titles and 11 Womens titles over that span
...UConn isn't super consistent, usually only getting to the 2nd round of the Tourney the season after and not even making the tourney 2 seasons after a couple times
