Most countries don’t need armed security in their schools. Most countries don’t need to modify their schools to secure the front entrance. Most countries don’t need to install hardened classroom doors so teachers can lock down their classroom.

The problem we are dealing with is mostly an American one.

Oh frick off with this bullshite. Move.

How many school shootings are in other counties vs USA?

This is an American problem that basically doesn’t exist in other countries or is once a decade and not multiple times a year.

Yes and no.

We could probably reduce the number of casualties by getting rid of guns, but then the assailants just use other means. Not to mention that bad guys will have guns for decades while the law abiding citizens will be the only ones disarmed, and that would create chaos. Oh yeah, and there's that 2nd amendment.

So, we really need to focus on mental health and keeping weapons out of the hands of those who are unstable, which is a very difficult thing to do.

We need a secure storage law. If you keep your gun where your kid can get it, or in your glove box where it can get stolen then you face criminal charges if it is used. If it isn’t on your person it needs to be stored in an approved and locked container.

We need universal health care that includes mental health.

(03-27-2023 08:54 PM)banker Wrote:  The vast majority of people who commit crimes involving a gun are already precluded from possessing a gun. Passing a bunch of new laws, enhanced background checks, gun registries, etc. therefore would have exactly zero impact on preventing the crimes these people commit. All those things do is place an additional burden on people who will get the weapons anyway. Well, that and give the government a really comprehensive database that they can use to confiscate guns if they decide too.

So more laws don’t stop anything. Someone who is willing to break the ultimate law by committing murder isn’t going to be deterred by any lesser law.

So what do we do? You severely increase the level of punishment on anyone that possesses a gun that is, by law, restricted from possessing one. If you are a felon and found in possession of a firearm it is a mandatory 25 years. Period. If you are found to supply a firearm to a felon you get 25 years. Period. If you commit a crime with a firearm it has an automatic 25 year penalty enhancement. Period.

What about schools? Already good ideas posted. You have to harden the perimeter. Most schools are fenced. You control access at the gate, not the door. You have a bunch of exterior cameras and a person that monitors them all day. You have alarms on every door, you have 1 full time resource officer per 200 or so kids in the school, at least one per building. The penalty for a kid bringing a weapon to school is juvenile jail till 18 and the balance of a 25 year sentence in an adult jail. Period.

I think these are actually good ideas. I'm on board.

I can agree with some of this..

As a responsible gun owner with a kid, my guns are always in a safe and when they're not they're only accessible by me...

Healthcare is not something the government should be involved in. Period. It's not my responsibility to pay for your mental health.

someone posted about 12 step programs and admitting you had a problem was the first step to fix it.

Your attitude above is the reason that nothing will be done and we will continue to have school shootings. You can’t admit that this is a problem that other countries don’t have.

i posted a legitimate solution. yeah, i admit it China doesnt have mass school shootings. North Korea doesnt have mass school schootings. Iceland doesnt have mass school shootings.

Move.

Do you want the government showing up to see if your guns are stored properly and confiscated if they deem they are not?

Do you want some government agency deeming you mentally fit to own a firearm.

Do you trust the government to do anything correctly?

That's the real "solution" they all want. Take away all the guns from 99.9% of all gun-owning law-abiding citizens.

Okay, if inanimate objects that are used to cause death and destruction are the real problem, then let's take away all motor vehicles and knives, while we're at it.

Even though, again, the overwhelming majority of the population uses those devices safely.

Why not focus on figuring out how to deal with the crazies instead? "Mental health counseling" isn't going to cut it, and in a free society, you can't (or shouldn't) lock up everybody who has a dangerous post or thought, so that leaves...

Now, narrow that down to how many countries of similar size and population yada yada? You can't treat this as an apples to apples comparison.

It is an American problem but when broken down by numbers these events are statistically insignificant.

From 2009 until 2018 the US had 288 school shootings.

The next highest country (Mexico) had 8.

Chicago had 5699 murders in that same time frame.. Again, take the weapons away from criminals before enacting laws that affect law abiding gun owners. Why ain't you harping on that? That's 5699 innocent lives snuffed out.

Wait.. Doesn't fit the narrative.

Go back and quote where I said we should take weapons away from law abiding gun owners.

I’ll wait.

What exactly is your solution then?

If I have a gun in my car under my seat and someone breaks the window and steals it I'm liable for criminal charges? What if they steal the car and use it in the commission of a crime, do I go to jail for that as well? Sorry but this is a non starter for me. If someone breaks in to my locked house or locked car then you hold them responsible for their actions not me. I don't want someone such as you determining what is the proper way to store my weapons. If someone is breaking into my house I need quick access.

And leading up to elections in Mexico they usually have around 100 assassinations of candidates running for office. If we have 1 it's a huge deal.

I can agree with some of this..

As a responsible gun owner with a kid, my guns are always in a safe and when they're not they're only accessible by me...

Healthcare is not something the government should be involved in. Period. It's not my responsibility to pay for your mental health.

Do you want the government showing up to see if your guns are stored properly and confiscated if they deem they are not?

Do you want some government agency deeming you mentally fit to own a firearm.

Do you trust the government to do anything correctly?

No, it's quite simple. If you buy a gun and it is used in a crime you are criminally liable unless it was stolen from an approved storage container (showing you in good faith tried to secure it).

No one is coming to inspect, instead the law is enforced when your gun turns up in a kids backpack or sized from a crime scene. You guys are all about personal responsibility, this is all about taking personal responsibility when you own a gun.

The problem we are dealing with is mostly an American one.

Oh frick off with this bullshite. Move.

Would that have stopped the mass shooting in Nashville? Your post has nothing to do with this.

So, guilty until proved innocent.

Yeah frick off unless you apply it to everything that can be used as a weapon and hurt someone.

Go ahead. The democrats should make this a bill then make it a high priority item. If someone steals a hammer from you and kills someone you go to jail

Yeah, frick off
