I'd remove it, and then build suites on that side. Raze the 'R' Room. Flatten the end zone. Of course, this is assuming that Rice is willing to spend the money. My guess is that it would take upward of $140million to do everything. I don't see Rice spending that kind of money on football.
I don't either, but I do see us spending closer to 100mm. They might eventually raze the upper east deck... and the views would be great... but I'd still rather the boards there for now. It wouldn't make as much sense if the home crowd couldn't see them.
They could/would hang down a bit, which wouldn't obstruct any views and make it a very large ribbon... and if we eventually raze it, we can move the boards on that side elsewhere. They're really just daisy-chained TVs/Monitors mounted to concrete. It's not rocket science anymore.
I really don't care about the ugliness above there. I'd rather ugly upper deck with an entertaining team and video boards for the home crowd than tear down the deck and have neither an entertaining team nor video boards. If its an either/or, or where we get the most bang for the buck right now... I go with the former all day long. It can't be easy to raise money to tear something down. It's easier to raise money to build something. Put a good team out there and then finance the demolition through gate, tv rev and advertising... while repurposing the east ribbon on the north and/or south ends or sidelines beyond the 20's.
The deck could be tarped with a mural that pays homage to the great players and coaches of the past. It could recognize our bowl history, championships, etc. I doubt Rice pays the money to have it removed, even though it would be a major improvement

If you're trying to liven up the game, I think we could do more with sound effects.... like an owl screech... perhaps one that uses speakers throughout the stadium to simulate the motion... or a 'hoot'. I think the hoot (along with some crickets) could be hilarious if timed well.... like a delay penalty on the visitors or while the umpires discuss a call or during a tv timeout... IDK. I'm not the funny one.
I think we should be more nerdy/techie... laser shows? Robot push-ups?? Maybe a drone in an owl costume sweeps across the field?? (use a helium balloon with fans to eliminate any embarrassing risk of crash?) Put a camera in the owl... show the video on the screen in real time?? You can still play Louie, but do this AFTER the immediate push button of a score reaction. You know, the second there is a score, someone pushes a button and the sound and owl are released. During that time, the Mob gathers itself... as opposed to asking them to be literally 'at the ready' for sometimes minutes, and sometimes with no pay-off afterwards. If you can't run the drone over the field, do it over the stands. The balloon principle should protect us from risk of injury from a crash... or do it above the lower seats of the now empty upper east... and make it pretty big... maybe even on a wire if necessary
Just spit-balling as I often do.
I like the LL. When I was a student we celebrated with Bonnet and push ups. LL is better.
But in the theme of celebratory noises to annoy the opposition, maybe use a loud screech? I mean really loud, as loud as a cannon shot. Something to make the opposition put their fingers in their ears.
The MOB currently plays the "Fight Song", followed by "Louie", for touchdowns.
We play "Bonnet" after field goals.
We don't have anything planned for the points added to our score by safeties by the opponent or returning a try.
"Louie Louie" has been in The MOB's book for over 40 years.
At first, the students in attendance were delirious when we played it, and wanted to hear it over and over.
Those of us with more than four years in the band got pretty tired of it.
We even wrote somewhat insulting walk-off line, announced while we played it off the field at the end of our half time show, to express our exhaustion with it.
Now I'm numb to it, and there really aren't many students coming to games to revel in it.
The students in The MOB enjoy playing it, and we still end every rehearsal with it.
As to a cannon - even staring at them firing it it still startles the crap out of me. Please, no.
An owl screech would be good.
Can the stadium PA make it as nerve-jangling as fingernails on a chalkboard?
Grungy-what is the song the BOB frequently plays that is very short, often right after a timeout is called?

The SAFETY DANCE (Men Without Hats)
Yes, a 40 year old one hit wonder will bring young fans to the games...

I’d add the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song to that excellent list.

Loki, I would beg to differ...
Artist: Men Without Hats
Album: Pop Goes the World
Song: "Pop Goes The World"
October 1987 Mercury Records
and probably the better of the two....although....
so...there's that.

What is “Blue Bonnet”?
We’re not using that title.

Thank you! A rare TWO hit wonder!
What better to play after a rare TWO point scoring play!?

What makes you think it would be primarily the opponents who are annoyed?
a. because the loud noises would happen after a Rice score. Adding insult to injury, or maybe vice-versa.
b. for many opponents, there would be more of them in the stands.
I hated that air raid siren that TCU used. Much more annoying than a cannon. I haven't heard any Horned Frogs complaining that the Frogs score too much.

But how COULD you hear them complaining with that dam siren going off???!!!
Sirens are annoying. Cannons make their point quickly and powerfully. You guys are a bunch of weaklings for not wanting one. Universities all over the nation employ cannons, not just UT and A$M.
