Yes. Top four seeds get a bye through the first two days.

2024 American Men's Basketball Championship Schedule
Wednesday, March 13

Game 1 – No. 13 seed vs. No. 12 seed – 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT | ESPN+
Game 2 – No. 14 seed vs. No. 11 seed – 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT | ESPN+

Q: will we have enough room in the trophy case for our participation trophy?

We're tied for 11/12th place now at 2-6. The 9/10 seeds are 3-5 and the 8 seed is 4-5. Wouldn't be hard to move up to 9/10 and get a first round bye if we show any kind of sustained improvement.

Such an odd format but I guess it’s for this year only as we are down to 13 basketball schools next year. It definitely gives an edge to the top four seeds (which isn’t in the cards for the men, but has to be the main goal for the women). The women’s tournament is the previous Saturday to Wednesday (the day the men’s tournament starts), so they are squeezing in an extra conference game into a shorter time frame so they are also operating on slightly more tired legs to begin with.

There was talk in these forums earlier that this team quit on each other and the coaches but that is clearly not the case. They have been close within striking distance in most of the conference games this season (but have only closed out two of them so far).

Dawes is growing up and beginning to make a significant impact after hitting the freshman wall over the past few games. I want the ball in his and at the FT line when the game is at stake. I agree with Ft Bend Owl that Selden is also making a huge positive difference when he is in the game. He is now getting starters minutes even though he is coming off the bench.

Now that we have seen how well Charlotte is playing and recognizing that Rice was able to hang with them (in OT), perhaps we should give this team a bit more credit for being competitive against some of the top teams in the AAC. Overall the game plans have been solid, the team has made in-game adjustments, (not all of them have worked….). and several players have made real progress improving their game during the season (Dawes, Selden, etc.)

They are still defensively suspect, especially in the interior and their 3-point shooting has declined for the past two years, but this team is deeper than last year and is competing in a tougher league.

I am enjoying watching this team compete this season, much more than last year’s team (that had Quincy). They have 10 games left in the regular season. I think they will have a chance to win at least 6 of them (but would guess that 4 more wins will be more likely).

All that being said, it was a great win on the road against Memphis. congratulations to these Rice Owls

I was wondering if it might be possible to squeeze out another year for Alem (who is playing much better this year than last year - and significantly more minutes too). He is listed as a senior but Klacsek for the women is listed as a junior. And both are in their fourth full years of basketball as best as I can tell. It’s tough to tell what eligibility is anymore these days in college sports.

Men currently have given out one scholarship and have at least four in their final year (counting Alem).

Another metric to add to our goals for the men’s programs, one that would be emblematic of moderate sustained success. Would be nice if our programs elevated to where we weren’t the straw that broke the camel’s back leading to a coach getting fired (houston) or the confirmation of a team’s decline.

From today’s Washington Post in an article about ‘teams we thought were good that probably aren’t’… “ But would it really be a, ahem, shocker if Memphis falls its next time out after it stumbled at home against 8-13 Rice on Wednesday?”

The entire back wall of the lobby, that was replaced by glass?
That was quite a bit of trophy acreage.
Rice lost all of that in the Tudor update, and there are currently zero trophies on display in the R-Room.

The All-American framed pictures, as well as the Hall of Fame framed items have been reproduced on 8x10 metal wall hangings with the photo and name on them.
There is a QR code on each one, but it's the same QR code on every one of them, so a reader still has to search for that person on the web page that the code takes you to.
They didn't create a unique QR code for each one that would link directly to the bio for that honoree.
Harder to get right? Yes.
Very little time before opening day? Yes.
More work than the casual nostalgic donor will do? Yes.

The Hall of Fame room in the R-Room contains the original Coaches Table started by George Martin at Ye Old College Inn in the 1920s, a copper-topped copy of that table whose provenance I can discover nothing of, and three large portrait-mounted touch-screen displays for searching for Hall of Fame members.

Other than that, there is a bronze owl sculpture under a glass case.
It's very nice...
...and displayed 90˚ off (clockwise, plan view), under a glass case, making it very difficult to turn.

The Owl Club / R-Association / Athletic Department facilities team triumvirate that controls the R-Room is still figuring out what and how to display other items.

The renovated R-Room is gorgeous, but it has a fraction of the wall space that the original had for displaying items.
