energyvault.com is the system I saw.... and they show the column/shaft I was picturing and the rising weight. I don't understand the 'arms' of this version and imagined something moving up and down within what is essentially an external elevator shaft, but 'whatever'. I'm not the engineer.

Not holding my breath for it, but just in case, the AthDept might peruse some of the ideas posted in thei thread and finally fix those bathrroms and the electrical issues. Plus, with Rice being so...lets' say modern-minded...what is their big problem with updating and making the stadium conform completely to the Americans with Disabilities Act with all the necessary upgrades? There are plenty of engineers available both alum and on-campous to get the job done. Maybe the stars will align and the U will finally ibvest its own money (not others') in it. Again, not gonna hold my breath, but would be nice to see for a change.

Lots of things that just aren't possible regarding the current press box and 2nd deck restrooms. We'd need to something like double or triple the sewer lines etc etc I think even the slopes from the lower level to the concourse are too steep.

It is possible to run lines under Harris Gully. The stadium itself was built with the gully contained under it in a conduit.

The concession areas can't cook on-site, because there's no power for it.
There's no power for walk-in cooler/freezers, either.
All concessions rely on product shipped in.
There is some refrigerator space, but it's nothing like the facilities at other stadia.

All power on campus is subterranean - there are no wires above ground.
Getting wires to the stadium from either of the power plants requires crossing the invisible Harris Gully.
How much spare capacity is there in the existing conduit?

How did they get sufficient capability installed to power Patterson and the practice dome?
Patterson requires significantly more power than either the original north end restroom structure or the large scoreboards.
The dome is another thing altogether.
They ran power to it from the west side of the stadium, beneath the Greenbriar lot.

They found some way to pull in more amps for those improvements.
What would it take to bring in more?

I've seen old pics with Harris Gully in them. I'm not saying that it and other items aren't issues, but my goodness, how can one of the top engineering schools not deal with this and just get it done already? I mean, it's like: "We're Rice, we are tops at solving big problems and bringing unconventional wisdom and world class academics to bear on almost anything, EXCEPT...we can't do what is necessary/figure out how to fix some electrical and gully conduit issues with our own football stadium." It's just strikes one as incongruent to see those two juxtaposed for all these years, given the school's rhetoric about its prowess and strengths.

There are plans, and they pre-date the AAC announcement, but they haven't been made public yet. My knowledge only goes as far as hearing that something is in the works.

Waiting is...

Perhaps Patterson's biggest role was in helping us get into the AAC than recruiting...

Ah, yes....but of course.

Seriously, though, if they are actually working on some actual plans to do something about:
1. the South End Zone,
2. the Press Box,
3. the Rest Rooms
4. the Electrical Service
5. the Concessions
6. the Upper Deck
7. the general look, signage and landscaping
might any of the ideas proposed here over the yaers (since Bob wrote the above quote) be incorporated? I think the HRS as Giant Sportsbar idea would grealy help attendance, along with some chicken wings and servers to help serve them.

If construction begins that soon, I’m at a loss to understand why they can’t tell us exactly what is going to be done. It’s weird.

How would you guys feel about buying a life-size cannon for Rice, to go with the new stadium renovations once they are complete? They run about $3,000. A gift from The Parliament. Thoughts

And Aggies.

I’d rather contribute to a buyout fund.

There must be a better way to celebrate a touchdown than just 'Louie Louie.' C'mon, we can do better than that!

If the Owls score and are ahead, we could bring back the “Go clock go” cheer. And if the Owls are still trailing, the “Fumble turkeys fumble” cheer.
