These appear to be new seats

Thank you for providing the photo update, Grungy. We certainly have plenty of room to add more of those seats/tables. An umbrella on top would help with the sun.

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
I have a thought for utilizing the space toward the top of both upper decks. It has long been a debate here concerning what to do with all the empty seats up there, and this may help. How about installing about five giant video screens on each side? This way, we could show other games that are being played around the nation while our own game is in progress. All those screens could also be easily incorporated into the game day entertainment. Fans may be more likely to come out for a Rice game if they know they won't have to miss other games being played on television. It could be the best of both worlds. Turn Rice Stadium into the college football Mecca of Houston.

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
Ourland, I've said the same thing. Rather than make HRS a place to go where you have to miss other games, make it the worlds largest sports bar. Encourage the watching of other games. I've suggested high top tables and charging points at the tip of the concourse with TVs everywhere... make the area where the HOF names are a scrolling billboard. Put in massive FREE wifi so people can stream other games on their devices... OR do their quantum mechanics research. SOME of this has been done... but on a limited basis... see the 'mini suites' in Grungy's pictures.

The challenge seems to be that we are trying to monetize every single action... and the reality is that we need BUTTS IN THE SEATS. Pull some food trucks onto the concourse and make pre and post-game food and drink (and watching the next game while the kids run on the field or in a bouncy castle, basketball hoop game or pitching speed gun on the concourse) a 'thing'. Once the butts are in the seats, you can start to charge for A FEW things... like a $5 wrist band for the 'kid zone', the 'lounge' or whatever... and more importantly, if we EVER move (by OUR choice) to another conference with better draws, we can tell our regulars... Hey, I know we've been giving this away for free up to now, but with our move to the Pac12 for next season, we will need to start charging for this.

People would understand THAT.

Instead we've gotten... I know this was free in the SWC, but now that we're in CUSA 4.6 (and not at the top of it) we need to start charging for it??

Yeah we're definitely on the same page. Fans could sit in their seats and watch other games on the giant screens, or hang out in the shade on the upper concourse to do the same in a sports bar-type environment. It could be a big attraction to casual fans who may not necessarily be big on Rice football, but who do love college football in general. It would also be a great way to bring fans to Rice Football. Get them hooked on the product and the exciting game day experience. If the product is bad on any particular season, there would still be plenty of other football to watch around the stadium. If it works, beef up the concessions and bring in the food trucks. Why hasn't this already been done at other stadiums across the country? No one has an attention span these days. People are bored easily. Entertain them. Give them plenty of other options to watch. We used to bet at the dog track in LaMarque. Between the live races, we could also bet on other races going on across the nation. It kept us engaged and having fun, and spending money. Installing video screens everywhere would be a similar concept, minus the betting.

Sell a 'sports pass' for $10 in the nose-bleed seats, and full access to the upper concourses. Let those fans watch as much football as they like. Keep the games going after our own game has ended.

Don't know if this law has changed, but it could put a damper on that plan -- https://www.consumerreports.org/consumer...n-a-60-tv/

So a portion of the money from all tickets sold would need to go to the stadium's cable provider. I wonder if the increase in concessions income would more than make up for it. This may explain why no one else is doing it.

Looks like you can do it on a 55 though...

C'mon guys... think outside the box. Get ESPN to sponsor the feed so we're limited to them during the game for highlights, which is good as it wouldn't take away from our game.... and on the concourse, the full monty.... get verizon to sponsor the wifi so we get their services before and after the game

It sounds good, but is it practical? Would they do such a thing for us? Is there a satellite that could get us all this content for free, so we could show multiple games on the jumbotrons? Brainstorming here.

One of the Vegas pools (Stadium Swim) just opened a place with a big a screen that shows multiple games. Was there during the olympics and was able to watch everything and the Astros.

Oh I agree. My point is that there is SOME way to do what we want. Maybe its a limited version as in we get 'sportcenter' updates during time outs or whatever, and streaming to your own device shouldn't be an issue... but we should be able to do SOMETHING to make it more interesting, even if its not perfect.

The restrooms are atrocious. Surprise Dept of Health or OSHA do not condemn them.

The west side upper deck restrooms are still the originals from 1950, completely with urinal troughs. For smaller crowds, those restrooms are usually closed to funnel everyone to the renovated ones on the lower concourse.

...much as the urinal troughs themselves funnel down to the lower concourse. I guess they're one of the things that makes it "Historic". I remember the men's bathroom "stalls" in old Autry which were just short walls with no doors. Indoor plumbing the way we are used to today has not been around as long as some might think:

RE: HRS / EZF Athletics Construction Thread
I have always thought they could build a “kid zone” that goes from the upper level to the main level and includes a 3-dimensional maze/crawl space and multiple slides between levels. Just build it off to the side of the current upper level. Lots of fans on the outside blowing through the area to keep the kids cool. Some kind of seating at the entrance/exit for the parents.

I also love the “sports bar at Rice Stadium” idea. Have the live game there but when Rice is down by 20 at the half, watch other games on the big screen. Make it student-run like the pub. Maybe “The Sports Pub at HRC”. Make it indoors so that it isn’t 1000 degrees and open it 3 hours before the game and leave it open for 3-4 hours after the game. Entrance/exit both on the outside of the stadium (so the full stadium doesn’t have to open/close with the same hours) and the inside of the stadium.
