RE: Would Memphis join the Big East if offered?
Our best sustained basketball run was in CUSA.
We got high NCAA seeds and success in the tourney.
There is no reason that cannot be replicated again.
However, football would suffer greatly.
You couldn't get anyone to schedule us.
We do not have the traditional rivalries of Army, ND, or even BYU.
It would be about 5 low-level home games and 7 road games.

The only two options are 1) get into P5, 2) continue to pump football and be the premier G5 football program with the hopes of a play-in for the playoffs or a NY6 bowl.
Bottom line is we can build football AND maintain basketball at the highest level, but we cannot destroy football AND maintain basketball at the highest level. We are not Georgetown. We are not Gonzaga. We don’t fit those models. You HAVE to have football to get basketball.
I really think many of you are still stuck in the mindset of the 80’s and early 90’s when your point of view was valid, but that is not the world of college athletics anymore.
What model DO we fit ? Because we sure aren’t like the schools currently in any P5
We are just like the 4 who just got in, plus Louisville, NC State, MS State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Washington State, Miami, just to name a few. Essentially we are like most state schools that are #2 in their respective state.
Getting the R1 designation is gigantic for our ability to catch that last train out.
more like the #3 in the state. not like the 4 that got in and not really similar to those listed above. No OCS.

and yes, southern miss and uab are R1
After that loss to a lowly AAC team...
Auburn is likely tied for 3rd in Alabama, with Troy...
UAB trending upwards to #2...

Hasn't the men’s basketball program traditionally exceeded the total revenue of the football program up until during the Tubby years? I also believe historically that the football team has generally operated at a deficit.
Maybe I'm wrong.

That’s always been my understanding. Without the P5 check, we depend on basketball.
As far as “We are not a small liberal arts school that can actually afford basketball only”, I’m lost.

Athletic department is primarily funded by conference money, donations and ticket sales. Eliminate/reduce football and you take away essentially all the conference money and an awful lot of donations and ticket money. Simple as that.
Basketball has operated in the black during good years with high donations and ticket sales, and in the red in the bad years.
What I mean by small liberal arts school - think of those tiny schools that are decent in basketball. 1) they generally have no or very scaled down football operations 2) they are wealthy schools that can afford funding a good basketball program via donations and their school endowment.
Not to mention they aren’t paying rent for their stadium - we rent both.
That’s not us. We have to have football on a large scale. We could write pages and pages on why - if you guys don’t understand this, then you just don’t understand. Can’t help ya. Maybe think why is there a G5 at all? Why does MTSU, who has 0 chance at a P5, still field an expensive football team.

If you don't get in the P5, then there will not be any option for "large scale" football. ESPN is not going to write huge checks to a irrelevant conference who is basically D2. Once the P5 dust settles there won't be big payouts anywhere except those conferences because no one will care about D2. You are basing your comments on a conference model/contract scenario the would be extinct under a P5 break-away league/division eventuality.
I would actually love to hear the pages and pages of the "why", but I'm weird I guess. I'm genuinely interested in understanding why football is so important for a D2 league.

Only three schools in the Big East that have their own arenas. Xavier, Butler and Villanova. All others pay rent to the city or some other enterprise. The original agreement with FedExForum called for the Tigers to pay 1/3 of the operating costs per game. At that time, the Tigers were on the hook for 10k of the 30k per game estimated (minus four free rent dates). In a normal year, the Tigers recoup that as part of an $800,000 PAYMENT from FedExForum. The Tigers also keep all seat ticket and club box revenue.
The university’s endowment is at the same level of 35% of the Big East schools. They are in top 1/3 for basketball revenue.
So I guess I just don’t understand, can’t be helped, pages and pages of why will do me no good and I’m probably going to hell.

If anything deemphasize basketball. Cheating, probation, vacated games, drama
It's been an embarrassment to the Univ for at least a quarter of a century

I know you’re stirring the pot, BUT, you’re not entirely off base. We went all in for basketball decades ago (wrong decision - should’ve done both, see Louisville), and honestly, it got us 1 Sweet Sixteen, 2 Elite 8’s and a vacated National Title appearance. Which is great, but all of those things happened 15+ years ago. Now we’re still hoping for a P5 bid and wallowing in basketball mediocrity.
And some folks still think we should go all in for basketball (again). SMH
