The Big East isn’t thrilled with UConn playing football at any level, so I don’t see where we’d be a fit. And if I were the rest of the AAC, I’d tell us to take a hike.

We either get in a P5 within the next two seasons, or I think we are DOA. It’s already hurt fan interest to a great degree (I didn’t even bother tracking signing day this year). Just too many years of being “almost” secure.

This...if we don't get out of CUSA 3.0 it does not good for our future in football. No one is going to show up to watch us play UNCC.

Sadly, this is likely the situation UM is facing.

And I agree that the AAC is not going to allow Memphis to play football only with all its other sports participating in the Big East. Furthermore, the Big East likely would not be interested in having Memphis regardless (for reasons unrelated to the fact that Memphis would be well qualified to compete in the Big East in men's hoops).

The hope is that Big 12 comes calling. Otherwise ... very concerning.

NIL money is going to shake things up more than all the previous conference re-alignments combined.

I'm not sure we have the money to compete on the new playing field, but there are going to be opportunities for those with the money to move up.

I think it might be a good idea for Memphis to cancel the basketball program and just focus 100% on football.

My fan interest is at an all time high. And our recruiting class is currently ranked #49 in the country - just one lower than last year’s which was the highest ranked in program history.

Cliff's Notes: Now - No, Future - Maybe

If we do not make a P5 then I'd say you have to consider it. The fact is that basketball has been the bread and butter of this university for the past 60+ years. Letting that die on the vine for the sake of keeping a D2 equivalent football alive is misguided at best (although I some may say we are attempting basketball suicide with our last 14 years and coach debacles). It's can also easily be speculated that eventually the P5 will break away from the G5/D1 universities and hold their own football championships as a separate division. I truly believe that's where this all is headed a few years down the road. ESPN may still want a piece of the non-P5, but it will be at a greatly reduced value.

I don't think it's time to pull any plugs on anything yet though. If we are having this same conversation in 5 or 6 years then it more likely than not we have been left out with no other lifelines coming our way. You have to chase that dream until the dust has settled and it's no longer an option.

Just my thoughts.

Just because a stray UConnian starts a silly thread doesn’t mean we’re actually “having this conversation”. Just sayin’.

I seriously doubt we are going to go independent. But I’m also not convinced being independent in football is the death knell that everyone seems to think it is.

Agree.

Change is coming and we have to be ready.

Let's say, hypothetically, the UM is faced with two options:

A. Keep both football and basketball in an inferior league that has no shot at participating in the major football playoff/bowl structure and in a men's hoops tourney for a national title (in this hypothetical, there likely has been a "breakaway" of the big boy leagues from the NCAA)

B. Drop football and have men's basketball as a member of a power league that is part of the big boy club.

Both options are horrible. But I choose Option B (the lesser of the two evils).

It just amazes what a total lack of understanding so many of you have on how this works. In realignment, basketball DOES NOT MATTER. If we get left out, going basketball only is not an option either. We are not a small liberal arts school that can actually afford basketball only - we have to have football.

The only two options are 1) get into P5, 2) continue to pump football and be the premier G5 football program with the hopes of a play-in for the playoffs or a NY6 bowl.

Bottom line is we can build football AND maintain basketball at the highest level, but we cannot destroy football AND maintain basketball at the highest level. We are not Georgetown. We are not Gonzaga. We don’t fit those models. You HAVE to have football to get basketball.

I really think many of you are still stuck in the mindset of the 80’s and early 90’s when your point of view was valid, but that is not the world of college athletics anymore.

We are just like the 4 who just got in, plus Louisville, NC State, MS State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Washington State, Miami, just to name a few. Essentially we are like most state schools that are #2 in their respective state.

Getting the R1 designation is gigantic for our ability to catch that last train out.
