And I was pointing out that even if somebody was inclined to be skeptical on some of the reporting, or hadn't encountered it, there's not much warranted grounds for doubt UMass on reaching out to CUSA about a FB-only spot.

I didn’t know that but thanks for correcting me. It’s hard to keep up with the news when your conference is getting ripped apart every week.

A UTEP-UMass basketball series would be awesome.

I was actually imagining what people around here would think if they saw football games on TV for "UMass vs. UTEP" and "UMass vs. NMSU" and the first thing that popped into my head was mostly:

"Oh man this should be a sweet basketball game! Why are they wearing helmets though?"

It’s been 25 years since those 3 teams have won a game in the NCAAs. Most people would just change the channel to a better game.

I’d rather be a has been than a never been, right Seattle U fan?

Seattle is also a “has been”. Runners up in 1958!

CUSA just struck gold when Liberty accepted the invitation to join the conference. Liberty has enough resources to build a conference. If they choose to they can help the FCS schools with interest only loans for a few years to help the FCS schools grow.

Who else from FCS can realistically jump? SHSU and JSU have had some success in recent years in FCS. Kennesaw and Mo St can’t be too far behind. Thoughts David St?

Realistically there’s EKU, UTC, and maybe a few of the WAC Texas schools.

I don’t think UCA or Kennesaw St are ready to move.

Missouri St is an odd scenario—I think they opt to stay FCS.

Delaware would probably be ready if they are interested in fbs. I'm sure they would prefer the MAC but if the MAC is full after adding WKU and MTSU, will they request a CUSA invitation?

Am I correct that this is the first time since the 1961 dissolution of the Border Conference that UTEP and NMSU have shared a conference?

What a long separation.

You are correct. We are about 45 miles apart, and about 230 miles from the next D1 school in Albuquerque. Next closest are Arizona State (275), Arizona, and Texax Tech are just under 400 miles. For reference DC to Boston is a little over 400 miles. Alternatively, DC is within a range of 275 miles of both Bridgeport CT and Chapel Hill NC.

Now, imagine how many D1 schools are between just north of NYC and Chapel Hill, then add in how many more are as far west from DC as Pittsburg. If there are 2 more isolated D1 schools, I can't think of who they might be. Very nice to be in the same conference now.

Now convince Northern Arizona and West Texas to upgrade so we can have have a more complete Border Conference reunion

NMSU - UTEP 45 miles
SHSU- La Tech 258 miles
MTSU- WKU 96 milkes
JSU - FIU 756 miles

If no one else leaves they got 8 some are decent travel partners.
Adding an Olympic partner for FIU if possible and maybe a Chattanooga or Kenesaw ST for all sports member would give 10 all sports 9 football.
From there its possible to add two more FCS call ups as travel partners.
They could be far off like NMSU and UTEP if close together. The two Northeast independents U Conn and U Mass could be football only or get a scheduling agreement adding their football home games to the TV package .

UCA is like 30 to 45 minutes drive from Conway to War Memorial Stadium depending on traffic. War Memorial Stadium could be a temp home for UCA until they get their stadium expand. The businesses and the city wants Little Rock to add football, but this would satisfy them some for now.

Missouri State said they want FBS. Their stadium is FBS size already, and they already added new stuff to the stadium like a scoreboard. Missouri State will join CUSA as long as MTSU and WKU stays in C-USA.

SFAU with temp seatings can be ready and so is Lamar.

Chattanoog is there with their stadium.

Tennessee State and Murray State are there with their stadium size.

North Carolina A&T and Florida A&M are ready to go along with Texas Southern.

Chattanooga was 1A Independent from 1978 to 1982. I don't think there is much resistence from P5 schools now. I think there are resistence from G5 schools, but why hand strong the top FCS schools with good football and basketball? The conferences went for markets instead of grabbing teams from FCS. Chattanooga and EKU could be good for football in the SBC along with Missouri State and Chattanooga for basketball. Lamar's baseball could help SBC as well.

We added in a way that establishes and reignites rivalries and filled gaps. We have 2 divisions of 7 in football that are well placed with one another.

Maybe C-USA should call up the 4 you listed instead since, you know, their conference is at 7 teams…

As for the Texas WAC schools, I wonder about ACU as a potential fbs school. Private school that obviously has money for athletics. New football stadium in 2017 and in the middle of an expensive renovation of their arena. The fb stadium seats 12k but open berms in end zones for easy expansion. A possibility if they are interested.
